I owe this place a review since this is my GO TO place for paddleboarding… its chilled, parking is easy, great view of Back bay, friendly staff and check in for $ 2 off or get a SUP pass for $ 150 for 10 rides. Great place to begin as a beginner or take family and they have picnic tables if you wanna have a picnic. Summer is here so let’s paddleboarding!

Had a blast! Friendly staff! Can’t wait to go again! Really neat area to relax and take in the awsome harbor veiws. I will be back for sure!

Our Girl Scout Troop had a 2 hour reservation with Pirate Coast Paddle Company.
The Pirate Coast Paddle Company was difficult to find. There was no signage on it location once I arrived at 1131 Back Bay Drive.
Jordan took my Girl Scout troop out on paddle boards and play for 2 hours. She was great. She was attentive to their needs. Everyone was friendly and helpful! Everyone had fun and I will recommend this place to families, friends and groups!

Forgot to check in so I apologize to the guy that gave me the check in price w/​o having my phone. Definitely recommend this place. Cool employees and definitely fun relaxing thing to do. Super chill on the back bay to paddle board. Will be coming back next week again.

Thank you to the awesome and super friendly team at Pirates SUP! I took four kids by myself and they made it so easy and gave us a quick lesson too. I recommend this place over any other stand up paddle board place! I’ve lived in Newport Beach my whole life but realized I never went SUP and I think it’s a great workout and easy for the kids, with the great weather I will definitely come back to this place and bring friends too! Thanks for a great memory with my kids and their friends!

Pirate Coast is the best place to paddle board for beginners or anyone else seeking a relaxing time in the bay! Its location is great with free parking along the street and a short walk to the hut (located in Newport Dunes). Their blue shack is right on the water which is great/​easily accessible and definitely fits in next to the water!
The bay is calm, so its a perfect location for any age. I’ve been multiple times and always had great experiences with the staff– they’re helpful if its your first time or if you’re a regular! If you need any help whatsoever their staff will assist you with instructions. It costs $ 20 per hour to paddle but its prorated depending on how long you stay out! They also take $ 2 off if you check in on Unilocal!
Pirate Coast also offers different experiences on the water such as– Night Glow Tours, and Yoga on the water!

First time for my wife and I and we will definitely be back. Easy to find and the rental process took just a few minutes. Gave us instructions that were not condescending but instead very helpful.
No hassle experience and well worth it!

We were trying to plan a SUP birthday party for our soon-​to-​be 11 year old daughter and several of her friends. After much research, it was obvious that Pirate Coast was the only choice. They are located in a calm area protected from the sometimes strong currents of Newport Harbor that are caused by tides and winds. Now, If you’re adventurous or more experienced, you certainly go as far away/​out as you want but try to time it with the tide and wind so you can «surf» it back. Anyway, we’d never been paddleboarding before and we got a nice on-​beach lesson before we tried it on our own. Our instructor was patient and very easy to understand. We started on our knees but soon all of us were standing – SUPing was very easy to do. It was super fun and relaxing.
More on their location – it’s right on the water so you don’t have to lug your SUP down two city blocks as with some other rental places. I was also able to pull my car right up to their picnic tables on the beach and unload our birthday party supplies. I then drove out and parked on Bayside Drive for free (you get 30 minutes free parking in Newport Dunes lot). As I began to set up, I was greeted by one of the three owners. Terrence was super nice and offered to help me tape down our table clothes with duct tape (he even provided it) and set up our EZ-​Up! I should note that he was off of work that day, spending time there with his family and some friends but he was so eager to help me – what an awesome guy! We brought along a coleman stove and cooked our hotdogs there and had our birthday cupcakes as well. This way we didn’t have to pack up to go eat somewhere else and the girls could fully enjoy the time. After our two hour rental was over, they played in the sand as we packed up. We were never rushed to start or end – it really felt like we were hanging out at a tropical beach resort. Their «office» is a cool grass shack. They also have small lockers as well as a shower and faucet to wash off after. The entire staff was super nice, and the group reservation was easy to do (10 or more to reserve). I highly recommend Pirate Coast Paddle Company – you will have a great experience!

Stand up paddle boarding has quickly become one of my favorite things to do! I’m seriously considering purchasing my own SUP!
Pirate Coast is located inside Newport Dunes. When you turn onto Back Bay Drive you can either
1) Park on the street (yay free parking!) and walk over to the booth
2) park inside Newport Dunes. When you pass the toll booth, take an immediate right and drive until you see their sign on the left. If you’ve hit the boat landing or Back Bay Café– you’ve gone too far
Once you’re there, you can rent a SUP for $ 20/​hour. (Check in on Unilocal for $ 2 off). They will also prorate the time while you are out. They will give you a quick tutorial if it is your first time. Its a tremendous workout! Since you’re on calm waters, you probably won’t fall in. But make sure to jump in since the water is nice & refreshing. Not cold at all during the summer.
The booth has lockers available for rent for $ 3. We just ended leaving our valuables locked inside our car and just brought our sandals & towels with us and left them on the tables so we didn’t even need a locker. The workers are friendly and laid back– no reservations are needed.
Quick Tip: this is simply a stand along the beach. They sell shirts/​tanks for about $ 20 but that’s it. No sunscreen, sandals, or bikinis– so come prepared. They have one giant jug of community sunblock, but it was empty both times we went. (Restock time!)

Don’t bother going anywhere else. Not only is the location great, not to mention on their website they give even better specific directions, but all the staff is so friendly. I brought my 2 year old and they have the seat for him on the board. Genius idea. Next time I cannot wait to do the night one. Great prices. This is my go to paddle boarding place now. Thank you tons!!!

When you want to get out for a bit of sunshine in Back Bay with some friends, paddle boarding is the way to go.
Fourth time with Tim and the guys at Pirate Coast, they are our go to every time we want to introduce people to paddle boarding. They give ample training as needed, have different board types and take pictures as your friends are falling off their boards trying to get ready for the pictures! We had a blast.

We set up a group paddle boarding session for my husband’s birthday about a week ago. Everyone at the company was extremely helpful and pleasant. I really like that not only did they have lockers, but they held onto the key for us while we were out on the water. The girl that helped us did a great job of teaching us how to paddleboard. I had such an amazing time, it was so much fun!
I highly recommend pirate Coast to everyone and will certainly be back as soon as I can!

Courtney is the BEST. She will teach you everything you need to know about a paddleboard. She is incredibly charming and charismatic. She will calm your nerves if you are scared. Mother Courtney to the rescue.

This was my second time renting from Pirate Coast Paddle and it was just as good as the first! The staff is incredibly friendly and the prices are great. We paddled around for about 3 hours and it was a wonderful day!
Additionally, the website is very informative. I had no problems parking on back bay drive and walking in like they suggested.

First time here today and it was a great experience!
PARKING IS SO CONFUSING UGH. After you get a ticket from the ticket booth, take an immediate right and go all the way down until you see the paddle boarding rental sign. You have to park in the parking lot right before it or else you can get towed.
After we parked our car we walked to the booth and got our gear.
1 hour — $ 20. The board and paddle were in great condition and were clean. Remember you’re paddle boarding in a lake so it’s going to be a lot easier for you to move.
It took me awhile to get used to turning but it was so fun! I really liked going around the lake and seeing other paddlers out there.
Staff was great and I think they have sunblock for you to use at the front of the booth.
Pay with cash to not get taxed and check in for $ 2 off!
Parking was $ 12 for 2 – 3 hours. $ 8 for 1 – 2 hours. First 30 minutes are free.

I had my paddle boarding lesson last weekend with the owner himself, Terence. It was amazing. He taught me all the tips and tricks and made me feel extremely comfortable and confident. It was an amazing experience and I will definitely go back again.

I had an awesome time paddle boarding at Newport Back Bay using rentals from Pirate Coast Paddle Company! The staff are very friendly and helpful and the prices are great (especially if you buy a Groupon). I highly recommend coming here for paddle board rentals.
P. S. If you want to bring your phone out with you, they provide zip lock bags which keep it from getting soaked but not lost.

I am a regular customer.

Went here for the first time not too long ago (and first time doing SUP) with some friends and we had a great time! Used the check-​in discount also! Don’t forget to check in! Perfect for a small to large groups.
It was a late morning reservation. We arrived at this little location to check in and get things all set. Service was very friendly and accommodating. The rental equipment was in good working condition and although they offered instruction, we didn’t really need it. We spent about an hour paddling around the cove. Waters were mostly calm so it was relaxing, a couple times a large boat’s wake would rock the board, but learned to put paddle in the water to keep stable during the rocky moment.
I also noticed they offered Glow tour at night and yoga SUP as well! Can’t wait for warm weather again to try the Glow tour.
Parking can be found along Back Bay Dr or in the paid lot through the entrance gate off Back Bay. They also have small lockers and life-​vests available if you need for a small price.
