History

Established in 2015.

Ironclad is a family-​run distillery making handmade bourbon out of a century-​old building on the James River waterfront. We use Virginia grain sourced from the award-​winning Renwood Farm in Charles City County and 26-​gallon handmade stainless steel stills to make the only craft bourbon on the Virginia Peninsula.

Just steps from the Shipyard, our unique location is also a stone’s throw from the site where the legendary, four-​hour long Battle of the Ironclads occurred during the Civil War. Hence, our name.

Cool space. I’m really excited to get a taste of the bourbon when it’s ready in 2016. I’m hopeful that a business like Ironclad Distillery will be a draw for folks to get downtown and for other businesses to open up shop in the area. We did a Saturday tour of the distillery and our guide was very knowledgeable and very open to answering our questions. You could tell he had a passion for the craft and was excited for the future. Will be returning as they throw more events and the barrels of the good stuff get cracked open.
