I’m upping the star count. First, the owner replied with a very sincere and gracious note, i.e., my feedback was taken constructively, as intended. Secondly, I’ve been back about half-a-dozen times since the original review, and the ice cream has been nothing short of perfection(as usual), as has the service, and thus, a 5-star review is more than warranted.

Was pretty good. The ice cream was great and loved their specialty cones. The ice cream wasn’t out of this world, but still pretty good. Was a bit pricey just for ice cream though so had to lower my rating to match the price with the quality.

How does this place only have three stars? I love this ice cream here. Delicious, smooth, and the perfect consistency and texture. I especially love the specialty cones like the chocolate chip cookie cone! That being said I did knock off one star for their selection, which could be a bit better. Getting a little more creative with flavors would be awesome.

Terrible. Vanilla frozen yogurt was ancient. Disgusting. Gave me diarrhea. Thanks but no thanks Rancatore’s. I will not be going back.

The frozen yogurt I had was quite good. Chocolate Mousse Yogurt, deep, dark and full over flavor. However, $ 3.50 for a micro cup(the smallest cup offered) is WAY over-priced but this IS Newton after all. Unless your wallet is filled with 20’s it’s a nice place to come with unique cones(m&m and pretzel for example).

I loved Rancatore’s in Belmont, and its cousin Toscanini’s in Cambridge, so I was excited to see a Rancatore’s in Newton. Went there tonight and was very disappointed. It was unorganized and dingy, noisy rock music was playing, the screen that was supposed to display flavors was broken, and it wasn’t clear to customers where to stand in line. We ordered three small cups to go, each with two flavors, and discovered on coming home that one of the orders was wrong. And the ice cream itself? It was fine, but not amazing, and two of the flavors we tried had ice crystals in the ice cream.

Hydrox frappé! Rancatore’s has some delicious, creamy, flavorful ice cream and even more outstanding service. I finally made it to Ranc’s! After seeing numerous reviews that it has one of the best frappes in Boston and delicious ice cream, I had to try it – and it did not disappoint! The servers at Ranc’s when my friends and I stopped in were supremely kind and hardworking. They encouraged us to try different flavors, as we have never been there before. Each flavor was so good and lived up to their name. I sampled the Hydrox, coffee, and Khlufi.(I wanted to try tiger milk [made with Frosted Flakes], but they were just out. I’ll just have to go back again.) Each sample of ice cream was packed with good flavor and had a perfect texture. Ranc’s has classic flavors, like coffee and vanilla, as well as unique flavors, including Hydrox and browned butter hazelnut. They also have yogurt, if you’re feeling like something a little lighter. You will definitely find something you’ll enjoy here! My friends got a scoop of butter pecan on a cone and a small cup of coffee. The portions are generous and at a great price. I got a small Hydrox frappé. Hydrox frappé! Definitely a must-try! Hydrox is the original sandwich cookie(before that other company took over). This ice cream, made with these cookies, is spectacular in flavor, not overwhelmingly sweet. Just spectacular. The server who made my frappé was amazingly kind and made my frappé perfectly! It was the perfect consistency and ratio of ice cream to milk, with a little more ice cream to make it thick without being too much. The small, I found, was just the right size to get a fantastic frappé. But if you’re a bigger eater, I endorse the larger frappé size(because the ice cream is good). Or get a large while you’re there and a small to go! The servers work hard, dishing the scoops out and making the frappes flow smoothly into the cups. When we stopped in on a Tuesday, it was busy! A steady stream of people came in and out, and the two servers managed samples and purchases smoothly. There’s an awesome and comfortable bar across from the ice cream cases to sit at and enjoy your treats. It’s a smaller shop [tucked in along a main street among many other little shops], but it’s packed with excellence, from ice cream to service. Excellent, perfect frappes; deliciously good and high quality ice cream; outstanding service. That’s Ranc’s.
