Once again John comes through with special wine request. Always a positive experience talking about the origins of his wines and beers!

John’s the best. This place is an example of the great things you get when you buy local! Whether for craft beer, wine, or harder liquor, John & Co. always steers me in the right direction, often to the compliments of my guests. Highly recommend.

Owner is awesome and very nice. He helped us wrapped up our 26-pack beer for a Yankee swap.

Awesome spot with a ton of great beers including singles, plus over 40 ciders! The guy who runs it is super nice too. Plenty of wine too! Great spot!

I went there once because it was super convenient to where I was at. Big mistake. I wanted to buy a selection of beer to offer to company the following evening. I looked at their fridge. A nice selection of good-looking beer. Not a huge selection, but varied. What wasn’t so great? No prices posted anywhere. If you’ve ever been shopping for«good» beer, you know that you can easily go from a $ 7 six-pack to a $ 15 four-pack. No way to tell that here. I asked the guy that worked there if there was any organization based on price, he’s like«I think it’s organized by east-coast/west-coast.» Which is the wrong answer to a yes/no question. I was like, «I’m not broke, I’ll just get 3 random sixers. I go to check out, and Boom — $ 36. Sorry, ya gotta post the prices. I’m not sure if it’s a law in this state, but if not, it’s certainly a courtesy to the customer. Combine no posted prices, with moderate overpricing = one star. get it together!

I really, really want to love my neighborhood liquor store more than I do. The first time I went there to buy a decent bottle of wine for under $ 15, the staff person had no idea about any of the wine(just pick something for me, ok?) and then gave me a bottle that would«impress» my hosts. I am not trying to impress anyone, I just want a decent bottle of wine. The 2nd time I was looking for something to drink with Korean food and they tried to sell me on rum and coke. Really? the staff are super nice, but aren’t actually very knowledgeable. I will probably still go there because I’d rather support the locals than the chain but…

Not the largest selection but it has a lot of what you want… The best part, though, they are the most pleasant people and if there is something you want them to carry they said they would, which is exactly what I wanted to hear. Great service.

Silver Lake Liquor is a vastly underrated and often overlooked beer, wine and liquor store located in Nonantum. It features a rather impressive, meticulously designed craft beer section featuring occasional rarities, a solid selection of spirits and a decent amount of wines. The store itself isn’t all that big, but it’s big enough. The service there is very friendly, and they even deliver to businesses in the area if necessary. I’ve had a chance to hit that store up in search of craft beer gems and more often than not, I’ve been able to acquire some pretty ‘rare’ bottles such as DFH’s 75 minute IPA. They also have a bunch of Founders, Pyramid, and various others and of course some Maine Beer Company on the shelves as well. Their selection is actually quite impressive, and this place has quickly become one of my favorites to hit up. They are putting a lot of efforts to developing their craft beer selection and it really shows. Last but not least, they also have weekly tastings although I have yet to be able to make my way to one, although I anticipate that will chance soon. They are every Friday evening at 6PM and are hosted by Bobby who’s a very knowledgable, friendly guy.

I have really come to really appreciate having this particular store around the corner. It was once the store I would go to in a pinch and not my «go-to» place. In the last six months or so, it has emerged as my store of choice. This is mostly due to the Friday night beer tastings that are simply so enjoyable and which you can read about in more detail in other reviews. But I can also count on this place to order wines that I like. Personally I have learned so much about craft beer having attended perhaps four of these tastings. Heretofore, I never would’ve chosen a porter, but having tried several and finding those that appeal to me, I have expanded my repertoire in the world of beer. Bobby, who conducts these tastings, is a very personable guy, knowledgeable and passionate about beer. It makes for a good time and it smacks of a «real people» feel as folks who come to the tastings are often locals who frequent them from time to time, so it brings the neighborhood together. I am really delighted to have this place nearby.

So judged off what some reviews have said, and what I have heard from others, this place has CHANGED a lot. And that is a good thing. After all, where is a beer snob to go when one wants a nice japanese hybrid grain saison? (ok, i had no idea what that was before I went to a tasting and left with a bottle — READON!) I live about 2 miles away, but it is around the corner from my sister. She stopped in one night, and told me about it. They had a VERY good selection of unique and craft beers.(not HUGE by any means, but more than enough to satisfy even the biggest beer snob). it is tucked down in the corner. and since my sister knows I enjoy good beer — she told me about it. And the other great part, one of the Employees, Bobby, holds beer tasting every friday night from 6 – 9. What? Free beer?!? Yes! Ok, so its not like you’re drinking a six pack, but thats fine. Get on their mailing list, and he sends out emails about the beers, what types that week, and a little history. Then when you get there, you find out more about them, he tells you of them, the type, ingredients, region, etc(kinda like a wine tasting at a winery or vineyard) It will help introduce you to try new things, and get you to open your mind a little. I can honestly say I never would have tried a milk stout in a can with a cow on the label, but after sampling I very much liked it! He has a wealth of knowledge, and is great to talk about beer with(although he probably wishes I would shut up about DogFishhead! haha). I have been able to pick up some very unique beers at good prices — and they will split up 4 and 6 packs and let you try just a bottle of 12 ounce craft beer without committing to a full pack(although then you will be back for more!) They also have a full selection of lesser and more common beers, and good prices to fit everyones needs. They have a decent wine selection(i have only paroused it casually, as I am there for the beer. But if you are local and need a 12 pack of Narragansett tall boys — stop on in! They also have some great spirits. Once again, like the beer, not rows and rows, but great selection and unique, from Johnny Walker Black to Buffalo Grass Vodka. I have been able to find new whiskeys and bourbons I had not heard of before, but also was able to grab a bottle of grey goose. The staff(bobby specifically, but also the other guy who was working the counter who’s name I do not know) are very friendly, helpful and accommodating.(the guy at the front talked to us for a good 20 – 30 minutes about spirits) They seem to be very passionate about what they do, and genuinely enjoy it — which makes it a better experience of course! If you have not been in lately, I would order you to stop in and visit. Even more so, get on their mailing list if you can, and check out the beer tastings EVERY friday from 6 – 9 pm. you will not regret it. This is truly an oasis for beer lovers, and a great place to learn and try something new

Not a great beer selection, but a good wine selection. Everyone I’ve dealt with there has been very nice, too. Helpful & accommodating.

Don’t bother with this place. The owner, Jon, was very rude to me when I went on my second trip to this store. Long ago, I figured this would be my local liquor store so I bought some beer there with no issues. On my second trip there, the owner was a jerk to me because I had an out-of-state ID. He didn’t have to be rude about it, but he was and refused to sell to me. My NH driver’s license was never an issue down the street at Gordon’s. I eventually did get a Mass. license, but will never go to Silver Lake. They didn’t have that great a selection of beer anyway, so no loss for me.

Located in the heart of «da lake» this place is so much more than it seems. Nonantum has a long standing tradition of being the Italian section of Newton, but did you know that this particular liquor store is the wine country of Newton as well? Are looking for that special wine that you used to buy but can’t seem to find anymore? Talk to Jon, the owner, and he can and will order anything you desire. Basicially a great spot for all your spirited needs. I like that they always carry my heavy load(I’m no alcoholic, I just buy in bulk) to my car :) Hooray for small business!
