Description

Specialties

A member of The Greater Philadelphia Gardens Cooperative, along with such well known gardens as Longwood, Winterthur, & Chanticleer, Hortulus Farm, a 100 acre 18th C. farmstead with 30 acres of gardens, has been called both «a garden of world class charm» and «one of Pennsylvania’s secret treasures». Open tours are offered Wed. & Sat., 10 – 3, May — Nov., and by appointment to groups of 8 or more. Hortulus Farm Nursery, specializing in tropicals, standards, and topiaries as well as the beautiful perennial plants found in the gardens, offers the rare and unusual in every category.

History

Established in 1980.

The gardens were created over the past 30+ years by owners and renowned horticulturists Renny Reynolds and Jack Staub, who came to Hortulus Farm, an original William Penn land grant of 1697, in 1980. The Isaiah Warner House (1723 – 1793) was added to the U.S. Register of Historic Places in 2004. Hortulus Farm Nursery, wholly owned and run by the not-for-profit Hortulus Farm Foundation, was established in 1995 to provide a beginning dowry for The Foundation, whose Board of Directors will oversee the garden’s transition to a fully public garden upon the owner’s demise. All tour fees and plant sales go directly to The Hortulus Farm Foundation.
