My Dad was visiting. His love horses was something he thought he would never be able to again experience. He simply cannot get up on his own. They were able to get him on the horse thanks to a special ramp and a very docile horse. He rode around the rink and they took him on the trail. While he didn’t get free rein — it did meet his dream of getting on a horse one more time. Thanks Halleck Creek!

Halleck Creek is associated with 4H of Marin County. They provide therapeutic horseback riding sessions for persons with disabilities. Riding services are provided free of charge to the disabled. They primarily deal with children with disabilities but adults with disabilities are welcome. There is always a need of volunteers to lead riders/horses, groom and tack horses and do general ranch work. No previous horse experience is necessary. HC is a popular destination for adolescent volunteers. Since volunteering involves working with disabled children, a fingerprinting and background check is required.

This place deserves infinite stars. It’s a 4-H riding club for disabled children and adults, run by two people and tons of volunteers. Every Saturday, upwards of 60 volunteers show up to tack up the horses and take folks on horseback. Amazing! And it’s completely funded by private donations from regular folks mostly. AND the rides are free for the kids and adults who benefit greatly from the challenge of riding a horse. Nothing compares to seeing how happy and totally independent these rides make the riders feel. If you have the chance, check it out. Or better still, consider donating your time/energy/love/money to this organization. The work they do is truly inspiring.
