Description

Specialties

Relax in a fully refurbished, theme-decorated antique railroad caboose beneath centuries-old trees on the shore of Clearlake in California’s high-elevation wine country. Experience a relaxed pace among 30 boutique wineries where natural beauty still exists.

With extraordinary nature trails, hundreds of kinds of birds, watersports, kayaking and numerous organic farms you can step back in time while only traveling 2 ½ hours from the Bay Area or Sacramento.

The cabooses provide an extraordinarily peaceful lodging with each being outfitted in a unique theme -. Owners Tony & Peggy create a lavish breakfast daily from locally-sourced organic ingredients and are enthusiastic local guides, helping you create a getaway that fits your vision. Whether you want to have an active experience or get away from it all, your innkeepers are excited about helping you with your plans.

The Featherbed Railroad is also a willing partner in planning your wedding, family reunion or other gathering.

History

Established in 1989.

Featherbed Railroad is the dream of a father-son team who set a goal to take antique railroad cabooses and turn them into luxurious suites, complete with Jacuzzi tubs and luxurious featherbeds. By sheer coincidence, the family found a beautiful tree-shaded location right on the shores of Clear Lake, the Bass Capital of the West.

The Featherbed Railroad has been home to many weddings, car club meetings and other very special occasions. It’s a favorite for anniversaries and birthdays and a popular gift certificate for any occasion — or for just no reason!

Meet the Business Owner

Tony, Peggy B.

Business Owner

Tony & Peggy assumed the role of innkeepers in May of 2008. Peggy got her Master’s in Geology on almost the same day as she and Tony bought the Featherbed Railroad. While she had worked on the project of cleaning up Edwards Air Force Base, today she enjoys meeting wonderful people like yourself. Peggy also is a big fan of the desert and did her Master’s Thesis on the source of the groundwater in Zzyzx where a small groundwater pond about as big as a Jacuzzi tub in a Featherbed Railroad suite hosts the native Mohave Tui Chub fish. Why the water remains at the same level and at almost the same temperature year-round is what Peggy figured out.

Tony Barthel had an event planning business 22 years before moving north to the Featherbed Railroad. He continues to write his popular Curbside Automotive Column. Tony’s a huge computer nerd so you might talk tech with him, or talk cars. Or trains.
