This place is 5 stars, but I heard Unilocal doesn’t count 5 stars unless I pay. This place is great, fantastic but there’s construction that is totally covering the front for over a year. Please come by! Great southern food. Potato salad is amazing. Crispy chicken and amazing with their homemade gravy. Everything is delicious! Parking is easy on residential streets and there’s a lot of kooky antique stores in the area to walk around in.

I gave this place four stars but this place is amazing, seven stars worth. My roommate and I were looking at apartments in the area and stumbled onto it, and man what a find. The chicken is so tender and flavorful, with crispy skin, and all the sides are amazing. The yams are basically dessert, the potato salad is some of the best I’ve ever tasted. The place itself is really nice too, an intimate space with antique tables and chairs, great aesthetic. The owner says that construction in the area is really hurting the business, and it’s a damn shame because not only is it such a great restaurant, it’s also surrounded by half a dozen interesting antique stores with a bunch of cool stuff to look at. Definitely check this place out, keep this place in business until construction ends next year. It’s so worth keeping around.

Some time ago we were staying at a nearby hotel because our house had flooded and the floors were being repaired. One night we decided to take a stroll up to Sweet Mo’s, with no special expectations. Not looking specifically for soul food, just for something close. Sweet Mo’s is a small place, without much in the way of atmosphere.(I personally enjoy it when the kitchen is visible to guests, but I mention it anyway because I know not everyone agrees.) The menu is simple and not particularly extensive. Our server was very pleasant; the service itself was neither especially prompt nor unduly delayed. All in all, I was not expecting anything overwhelming. But OHMYGOSH the food! Soooooooo good. Everything from the side dishes to the sweet tea. The fried chicken was juicy and tender, cooked perfectly and absolutely delicious. My dining companion informed me that her smothered chicken was equally amazing. Even the cornbread was extraordinary. I regret that we didn’t have time to sample one of their desserts, because they sure looked good. I regret even more than we don’t live anywhere within their delivery range.

Discovered this place a couple weeks ago on Lankershim! What a great place to come and get some soul food! Avoid the long line at Sweetie Pies and come here everyone! Yummy yummy chicken galore. Probably the best place in the valley to get some soul food so everyone should come! The people are very friendly and the service was great. I had some chicken and mac n cheese and it was great! Chicken fried to perfection and delightfully cheesy noodles. I also had a bite of the chicken with gravy and that was AMAZING! Get it ya’ll. Thanks for the great meal Sweet Mo’s! I’ll definitely be coming back here with all mah friends!

Fantastic! Had been searching for home cooked soul food in the area and found this little gem barely a mile away. Upon walking in, the atmosphere and sweet smells intoxicated me immediately. After being in a daze, I finally ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of Mac n Cheese. Every bite was even better than the other. Tender and crunchy chicken. Sweet and fluffy waffle. And what might be the best mac n cheese I’ve ever had. Will definitely be back again.

As someone who was born in Louisiana and raised in Mississippi, this is some good soul food. The staff was super nice and friendly. Definitely coming back multiple times.

Best fried chicken in Los Angeles. No joke. I’m not exaggerating. Roscoes can keel over as far as I’m concerned. Been coming here for almost 10 years now!!! Did I mention the gooey butter cake? Oh that’s right, I ate it all. Unreal food. Best kept secret. I suppose it’s not a secret anymore though! Cats out of the bag!

This place was absolutely delightful. The owner came out and spoke to us like we were family. I got the fish and greens and felt like I was back home in the South. There was no line and the service was lovely. I highly recommend this place.

Such a warm welcome coming in. Already feeling the 5 star service, but the food set it over the top! Had the smothered chop and a side piece of fried chicken. Both VERY reasonably priced. Corn bread came out hot, moist and delicious! Sweet tea is some of the best I’ve had in L.A. Interior is cozy and very inviting. You genuinely feel like you are at a friends house for dinner. Most important though — do NOT leave without trying the ooey gooey butter cake! It is UNREAL! Mac and cheese and greens always on point too. Thanks for the great meal and exceptional service! My new go-to for real for food that really is good for the soul!

The last time I was here prior to today it was called Angelina’s Soul Food. that was around 14 years ago. The food is as good as I remember it being all those years ago. Love the fried chicken!

It may just be our East Coast taste buds, but finding good food in California is near impossible. I searched Unilocal for the«best soul food» near North Hollywood and this spot came up. The reviews seemed legit so my fiancé and I went for it and ordered a feast! We had the 4 wing platter with greens and mac and cheese, 2 breast platter with string beans and mashed potatoes and gravy, veggie platter with cabbage, potato salad, baked beans and fries, the platters also came with a corn bread each and we got peach cobbler and pineapple white chocolate butter cake. The woman taking our order was great and helpful, the delivery was fairly quick and the man was nice and friendly. When the food arrived it was nice and hot and we were hungry, so we dug right in, sharing everything. It did not take long for us to realize that this was yet another BUST! Unfortunately, for us it cost about $ 55 for us to figure out that this place is just mediocre at best. For us the flavors(aside from a little salt and pepper) just weren’t there. Nothing at all stood out. The corn bread was not as sweet as we would like and a bit dry or stale along with a little burned on the edges. The chicken was fried but didn’t have a good crunch at all. The greens needed seasoning, but were ok. The mashed potatoes were ok, but didn’t taste fresh. The baked beans were like a different kind of bean, not bad, but the sauce was kind of tasty. The cabbage looked like it would be good because at least we could see the pepper speckles, but it was mushy and bland. The mac and cheese was not good, as we are used to the«baked mac and cheese» rather than the runny type. The string beans were nasty like they came from a can. The French fries were crinkle cut and ok. The potato salad was«missing something»(you know like a familiar ingredient that I’m used to tasting), but regardless it was the highlight of the meal. In finishing our meal we indulged in the desserts. The peach cobbler was ok and had the good pie crust pasty about it, but we still felt there was«something missing» with it and it didn’t have the crumble topping. Lastly we went to try our pineapple white chocolate butter cake which sounded simply divine when we read it off the menu, but 2 forks in and we notice that there is a bit of MOLD on the top of the cake. If the meal didn’t already leave a bad taste in our mouths seeing that mold on the pineapple white chocolate butter cake totally disgusted us. Sorry to say we wasted our money and we will not be patronizing this place again.

Highly recommended! Sweet Mo’s is an amazing spot to eat, especially in a part of Los Angeles where good soul food is hard to come by. The food is always fresh, chicken is hot, greens, sweet potatoes, black eyed peas, cabbage is DELICIOUS, and best of all. I’ve never been served a cold piece of cornbread. All the food comes out hot and fresh. You can see even watch the dedicated, talented chef making magic a few feet away from where you sit. Pair it with some sweet tea, and ask for a heaping serving of Crumble’s homemade cakes. If you catch him on a good day, you might even get a free sample of a delicious new dessert he’s trying out… ask for Crumble.

Says they are open until 10p. I called to place and order for pickup(or delivery if they had it) at 9:25p. The lady on the phone had an attitude when I asked to place a delivery order stating it was past their delivery time(fine no prob…), and that the kitchen closes at 9p. Food good tho

Our favorite place for fried chicken and wings. Try the sauce on the hot wings! Everything we’ve had is good. It’s hard to resist the desserts. Parking is a little difficult but they have curb side pick up and deliver within 3 miles.

First off, I would have totally given this place a significantly lower rating due to the wait time for takeout if it wasn’t for the sweet sinfully heavenly delicious goodness bestowed upon me called GOOEYBUTTERBANANAPUDDINGCAKE!!! It just doesn’t make any sense how good that cake was. I mean damn! I enjoyed the first half of it yesterday, and then ate the rest today. As I ate it, I thought to myself, «this is really good f*ckn cake!». Totally Unilocalable and deserving of 5 stars, but I had to take away one star because of the time it took to get 4 wings, some fries and that cake. But the cake was totally worth the wait so I can’t blame it on the wait time so my only other issue justifying taking away a star is the fact that I felt the wings were underseasoned which is kind of disappointing for a soul food restaurant. I definitely expected better. Whatever, it’s all about that cake on this visit. I will definitely visit again and try other things but I’ll definitely call ahead beforehand to avoid the wait.

All I’ve had is a piece of pie, but it was scrumptious. The wait in line for the place is sometimes 1 hour and 20 mins., or I would have been back sooner. People drive here to dine from Long Beach. Gawkers slow traffic on Lankershim passing it. I was walking in Downtown LA and overheard people talking about it. It is the quietest restaurant outdoor patio I’ve ever passed. No chatting, just chewing. :)

I absolutely do not understand why this restaurant has 4 stars. My boyfriend and I ordered the catfish dinner. The catfish was not cooked and was one small piece for a dinner price! The Mac and cheese was gross and had no love or flavor. The greens were bland and had no seasoning. If you know soul food at all, and try this place you would agree. this is the worst soul food I have ever had. I’m writing this so that people don’t waste their money like I did. I would suggest Moms bbq in van nuys, or sweetie pies down the street if you’re looking for a place in the valley. If I could give them 0 stars I would sadly.

Went here once. That was one time too many. Terrible. Overpriced for the portions. Also– ordered a slice of red velvet butter cake. It was like biting into a wedge of sugar. Just disgusting. Too bad. Owner seemed like a nice enough guy but I just couldn’t recommend this place with a clear conscience. Sorry ‚(

Delicious! We had just left a trade show and both my friend and I wanted«Soul Food» so sure enough we put it into Unilocal and up came Mo’s! We weren’t sure what to expect, honestly there were no expectations, we just drove. About 20 minutes. We had so much to talk about from the show that we didn’t focus on the destination until we actually got there. First reaction«Damn, this place is small!» But let me tell you, out of this small eatery they’re cooking up BIG flavor in delicious meals with friendly customer service. So glad we stumbled upon this place. And we weren’t the only ones! The door never stopped opening with patrons looking to get a seat in & take out orders being picked up. Seems we got there just in time and were fortunate to get a table right away. No frills, this place isn’t fancy. If ambiance is what you’re looking for, this might not be it. If a good fresh home cooked meal is what you’re looking for, this is DEFINITELY it. My wings on my 4 wing combo were HUGE and the sides were plentiful. The gravy, delicious! I ordered Greens & Cabbage as my side dishes. Honestly, the cabbage left a little to be desired. It needed a pinch more of salt or something. The greens were delicious but not incredible. The highlight was definitely the chicken. Fresh, crispy, delicious. The cornbread was awesome too. They also had some pretty delicious looking desserts but after the meal we couldn’t afford the room in our bellies for anything else. And the price… is right! Wasn’t too expensive and definitely fair for the meal we were served. Thanks Mo’s! I’ll be back.

I started dating a girl named Maureen last year — nicknamed«Moo», so this place has gotten in her cross-hairs in a big way. I have been here once before — and it was really quite good. And coming from a Chicagoan like me, who has had some of the best Soul Food north of the Mason-Dixon Line — this is high praise. What I love most about Sweet Mo’s is that it is family run. In fact it is so family run, that with its open kitchen, and homey décor, I feel almost like I have been invited into someone’s home. There are even nice touches like having regular household lamps with lamp-shades, sitting on dressers with drawers. The tables are cramped but that just adds to feel that the family pulled out extra tables for the family and crammed everybody in for a big Thanksgiving dinner. And people talk to you here — almost like a family making conversation with a guest. On busy nights this place can have a long wait on the street. But it is worth it. Almost everything is delicious. The only two sub-par dishes that I ate here was the Mac and Cheese, and the Greens. Everything else — especially the chicken, the gravy, and the other meat dishes(like pork chops) were great.

Ordered the fried chicken, mashed potatoes, greens, mac n cheese, green beans, cornbread, catfish and dirty fries… The only items that were semi decent was the cornbread and the catfish. The fried chicken was bland, mac n cheese flavorless and mushy, greens were bitter, mashed potatoes were dry with a gravy that tasted like it was from a can, green beans drenched in pepper and also tasted as though they came from a can. Last but not least, the fries seemed as though they came from a school cafeteria. The waitress checked on us at the very end of our meal and when I told her that we did not enjoy any of the sides, her only reply was… «Oh, sorry» Really, that’s all you have to say??? For 45.00 you’d expect a little more sympathy for poor tasting food!!!

I came here with 2 friends. We had been craving soul food for awhile. This place is a hole in the wall so I expected it to be good. First, it took them 40 minutes to get our order to us. 20 minutes in though they told me that they had run out of the smothered chicken, no big deal I just changed my order to fried chicken. Then I noticed that this group of women(probably regulars) got their food waaay before us and they had only waited 5 minutes for their food and they had all ordered smothered chicken! We finally got our food and one of my friends said he noticed a lot of the food looked and tasted either canned or made from the box like the green beans and the corn bread. The chicken and the lemonade was good though. When it came down to pay, I was charged $ 16.30 for the smothered chicken that I didn’t even get. I just left it alone it could be a tip since our waitress was nice, despite the long wait. But when I checked my bank account later they had charged me about $ 30 for the meal! Overall bad service, high prices for ok food, and irresponsibility towards finances. Sweet Mo’s isn’t sweet! Won’t be going back again!

Chicken and waffles amazing! Never had juicier chicken! Seasoning was good too. Waffles were a little mushy, but that was probably from the butter I put on top. Good flavor tho. Potato salad was ok. Service sucked. They were nice but didn’t say anything at all when I was eating here. Food took 20 minutes to come out, not bad. Super fresh.

Lord almighty is this place slap yo mama good. Hadn’t been in quite awhile and this North Carolina gal had a hankerin’ for some down home cookin’. It certainly appears they’ve upped their game quite a bit from my previous visit. The scald on their fried chicken is freakin’ fantastic. It’s an art that sadly most west-coast eateries can never properly master. Side dishes were all perfectly de-lish as well as the desserts. Basically nothing is lacking in my opinion other than the fact they aren’t located next door to my house. Which is probably a good thing or I’d be as big as one. Big thanks to the lovely lady who took my to-go order, for tossing in the extra wing and remembering to include some of your excellent vinegar based hot sauce. So good on top of your greens which are just unbelievably good. I definitely plan on becoming a regular again.

I didn’t even get to try the food — which is a real bummer since I was craving some fried chicken goodness. I placed an order around 455pm and arrived 30 minutes more or less to pick up my food. The man over the phone informed me that someone else had came in to pick up my food. I was baffled because only 2 people knew about the order that was placed and we were both out in the back waiting curbside!!! Aside from all that, he continued to express to me that if I wanted my food I would have to wait an ADDITIONAL25 mins. No apology for mixing up the order, no sympathetic gesture. «I don’t know what to tell you, if you want your food you’re going to have to wait another 25 mins.» In fact it was almost like he was saying I was making this shit up! LOL. There is NO sense of responsibility and absolutely NO sense of ownership and NO urgency to resolve the conflict. I am greatly offended.

In the Burbank area and was in the mood for fried chicken, handy dandy Unilocal has led me here! great Food. Came in on Tuesday about 7:30, pretty full house, had a seat at the bar area… Service was slow, but understandable, only one cook back there & one server. Chicken & Waffles: the chicken was great, the waffle was a bit hard. Side orders: mash potatoes were my favorite! The gravy was PERFECTION. Mac n’cheese was fantastic-Not too rich. The baked beans another fave, sweet n savory. Friendly staff.

Delicious food, quaint atmosphere, relaxing soul music, TVs to watch the bball game, open windows with screens for a nice breeze, amazing sweet tea and desserts, a sweet waitress BUT a rude owner/manager! Tonight after our meal, I had to use the bathroom and the waitress said it would be a few minutes because it was really busy back there… Weird, but whatever. So after a few minutes, we were trying to leave and I asked her if I could go, and she said unfortunately it was too busy and the manager or whoever the guy was wouldn’t let anyone go back there! He came out himself to tell me as well and was«mildly» apologetic. I was clearly taken aback and worried since we had walked give or take 15 blocks there and I just drank about 4 glasses of tea. I was about to start begging if I could just go real quick. I was looking at my husband and talking to him about what we should do and in response to something he said I went«are you sure?» And the manager guy said back to me «yeah I am sure”— ummm wasn’t talking to you! And REALLY? I just dropped $ 50 at your restaurant and you sell fried soul food with hot sauce and syrup— how are you not going to have a bathroom for people? This is North Hollywood, not Hollywood. And even people there let me use the bathroom at restaurants… He was just rude, and it was a poor way to end an otherwise great meal. Had to sneak into a Honda dealership down the road to pee, which thank god I did since we both had to go again by the time we walked all the way home! I literally wouldn’t have made it home without going somewhere along the way. Just could have be handled a lot better and wasn’t a very good way to treat customers. Really liked this place but now I question if I will return based on that guy— your customer service has to be just as good as your food…
