I visited The Family Jewels with a box of silver and gold, jewelry pieces, flatware, and decorative items. I had an appointment, and was well prepared for the visit. Upon arriving, I was met by a woman(an assistant?) who took some basic information. She then introduced me to the owner, and left us alone. I asked him a few questions about the current price of silver and gold. His response: Don’t treat this visit like a free estimate. If you want an estimate, go elsewhere. And if you don’t like the current price of silver and gold, go somewhere else. Okay — I get it. He was a wee bit off-putting, but we slogged on nonetheless. He began to look at the items I brought to him, and then called the woman to return. She began to engage me in conversation and attempted repeatedly to keep me from watching what this man was doing. I had questions for him; he clearly did not want to hear from me, and she was there to distract me. I had several thousand dollars of silver and gold with me, and he didn’t want me to see what he was doing? I felt like a pawn. I found the owner of this shop to be unfriendly, secretive, manipulative, and greedy. I understand he is there to make a buck, but so is every customer who walks through his front door. It is important to run an ethical business. This fellow belongs behind a dark curtain somewhere, and in fact I think that’s exactly where he went when we finished our very unpleasant transaction. The current newspaper advertisement for this business reads: «Very Actively Purchasing». Actively is a good word; AGGRESSIVELY might be more appropriate. I will never go back.

Stay away from this business. This«store» is advertised at the Big Y chain of Grocery stores as a place to sell old jewelry. My appointment today(10−4−13) was disappointing. I had one piece to sell, arrived at my meeting time; the owner/manager asked me a series of routine questions, with an exaggerated German accent. This behavior was at the minimum unprofessional and more likely the racists overtones of his comments immediately made me uncomfortable. He expected me to commit to sell the piece without actually discussing a price. He did would not provide an estimate or ball park figure. The meeting was a waste of my time and extremely unpleasant. Stay away from this business. It is predatory and looking to take advantage of uneducated or desperate people.
