I was introduced to the swimming pool trade, when I was 21. I worked for Anthony Pools running gas lines for pool heaters. After a year or so with Anthony, I started work with a pool builder/​service and repair company in San Rafael, CA as their only full time employee. For two years I was asked to do everything from monitoring the construction of the pools and addressing all the problems, to servicing them after they were completed. I learned a lot about construction of pools and repair and maintenance of pool equipment.

I also learned a lot about how not to run a business. It was a Thursday in early spring that I was told that the company had gone bankrupt. The timing of this could not have been worse. We had just bought our first house and Jenny was pregnant with our first child and now I was out of work. Not so good. I needed a new pump and they installed an incompatible expensive pump with my control system. Different brand that cannot be controlled by my system. I find out that they way over charged me when I talked to other providers. Then quoted over 5k to put a compatible control system in. Had some other repairs done that did not work and had to be redone by others.

The owner of this company is a liar and attempted to file a false statement to his insurance company. His employee ran into my car and admitted fault instantly. That is until Mike got involved and then all of the sudden his employee Chris changed his story. Instead of just being a simple deal I had to wait for the insurance companies to work through Mike’s lies. In the end the truth came out and my car is now being fixed by Mikes insurance company. if this is an indicator of their integrity I would steer clear of this company! If you don’t I wish you the best of luck.

Bought a new house in May. Called Mike to make sure they would continue managing the pool after we took ownership of the house. Mike agreed. 3 weeks after moving in I realized no one was coming to the house to do maintenance on the pool. I called and left a message. Mike called me back several days later and said they were too busy to take us on as customers. I told him about our previous conversation, which he did not recall. Then he said he’d speak to his colleague and call me back to figure it out. Never heard from him again. Awesome!

This company is not trustworthy. I called for a first time service and they gave me a day and time to come and they cancelled at the last minute. Then owner, Mike, called and said they will set up another appointment and he will call me and I never heard back from him.

Hot air. I got hot air when I called to schedule a service. And then a dance. Neither receptionist could give me a solid answer about any question I had. And «Mike» was going to call me in the morning and then when I called them in the morning to catch him, I was told he’d have to call me in the afternoon. Then I was told he would call me after the route manager returned and when I asked when that would be I was given my 4th, I don’t know. And they tried to tell me that they were busy because they are a small business. I’m a small business, I’m busy and I call new, potential clients back right away. My take is that if they are too busy for my call they are too busy to effectively manage my account.

I forgot I had previously left a review of Mike’s Pool & Spa. We are selling our home and will no longer need a pool service, but that is the only reason I can think of to not use this company. We have had Mike’s maintain and upgrade our pool and spa for 7 years, and they are excellent. From the people who maintain the pool weekly, to the office folks, to the ability to talk directly with the highly knowledgeable owner and his staff, this company has consistently exceeded our discerning expectations.

I called Mike’s a few weeks ago when my pool pump died, and of course it was the beginning of the pool season so everyone was super busy getting their pools ready for the summer. I spoke with Mike and he sorted me out with an appointment to get a quote and a follow up appointment for the work a few days later which he suggested I cancel should I not like the bid. This meant that I had the pump replaced within a week of calling up Mike’s. Dan replaced the pump in about two hours.
The bid was the same range as everyone else’s and after Dan finished installing our new pump we were able to get in and swim a day or two later.
Customer service from these guys was great! We’re definitely going to be calling them back when the next thing goes wrong.

If you look in Unilocal for pools, hot tubs and spas you may find reviews of the YMCA, JCC or Frogs. You don’t find very much to go on for equipment maintenance and repair. Called Mike’s after frustration with previous service person who never liked to work too hard. Matt the technician from Mike’s was skilled, reliable, knowledgeable and honest. The staff in the office are thoughtful and concerned about your issues. Mike’s may not be the cheapest you can find but the price is worth the service. If you have an equipment issue or want maintenance this is the place.
