The food is great the beef salad is the best I ever had. the phos are tasty. I really like this place.

i come in for lunch every now and then and i’m always happy. i usually order the spring rolls and phở tai, both are awesome. i’ve also had the lemongrass skewered chicken which is also delicious. even their banh mi sandwiches are great, try the pâté! solid spot! street parking during the day but are usually many open spots nearby. in the evening, i believe the lot in the back can be used.

Stopped by on a Saturday night for some hot and spicy, beef Phở. The actual restaurant is bare and there are only a few tables, around 10 or so (although it appears in the photos that there is an upper level which I have not accounted for). Nonetheless, the majority of tables were taken and there was only one man, who appeared to be the owner, both welcoming customers, taking and serving orders for all patrons. Because of the lack of staff, service was slow so that brings it down a notch. I don’t completely fault them though. Running a business isn’t easy so I commend small business owners who work their butts off and run around trying to do it all.
Aside from slow service, the lack of parking is also a negative. If you’re lucky you’ll find a spot right out outside Huong Viet. Otherwise, parking around the corner in the residential area is necessary.
As for the Phở, not the best I’ve ever had but still tasty. A major bonus? The price. The check for a small Phở dinner for two was around $ 12 and some change. Awesome! ;) The portion of beef slices was fair in comparison to the price. Because I haven’t tried anything else but its rare beef Phở, three stars but it’s a good three stars! Don’t let it fool you, I would still suggest this place to others for Phở.

Love the phở! Place isn’t the most beautiful inside or out, but feels intimate and authentic. Haven’t tried anything but the phở, to be honest.

We’ve been back several times since my initial review, and the phở and food is still really good. Service has improved, though we don’t often come when busy. I’d definitely recommend this place if you love phở.

The only thing that made this 2-​stars is the long wait for the order, it took us an hour to get our food and the place is not that full. Ok I get it that you are keeping the reputation that it’s authentic home style vietnamese cuisine but I suggest for the owner to add more cook to the kitchen line to have a faster food cooking time and service.
The Phở and fried spring rolls are good, no questions about the food. If I am going back to either have my food to go or sit-​in to dine, I will definitely call 45 minutes in advance.

This place is awesome. It’s definitely one of my «go-​to» restaurants with my husband when we want to eat out. The food is homemade and very delicious, and very inexpensive also. Between two of us, we can get an appetizer to share and then two entrees also, and spend under $ 20. The fact that the place is BYO also helps! My favorite appetizers are the vegetarian spring rolls (if you want something hot) and the vegetarian summer rolls (if you want something cold). The best entrée, hands-​down, is the traditional phở… any of the varieties… they’re all so tasty! Don’t judge this book by it’s cover. The atmosphere isn’t the coziest, but the food is absolutely delicious and you won’t be disappointed!

Today was my first time trying Vietnamese food and I’m in heaven! I got take out and I started easy with the broiled rolled beef with lemon grass and ginger and the summer shrimp rolls. Delicious! The flavored explode in your mouth! I cannot wait to go back. Next time I’ll eat there!

Visited Huong Viet yesterday with three other people for a second time. The place is clean and very homey. We had the spring rolls, fried squid, fried shrimp, and summer roll. All of them were very good. For the entrée we ordered the shrimp with garlic and onions, beef and broccoli, Beef with pineapples, and the rolled beef. Everyone enjoyed their food. My shrimp in garlic was really good, kind of spicy and sweet. Great place for a lunch or dinner.

Great food that doesn’t break the bank. Décor is outdated but food makes up for it. My go to Phở spot.

Ever since Bihn Duong went downhill regarding the cleanliness, Ive been looking for another Vietnamese place in North Jersey. I found Huong Viet via Unilocal.The menu looked great with a lot of choices. Though the location, décor and service were good, the food I found lacked in flavor. #1 the spring rolls were wrapped in wonton wrappers, no rice paper and the fish sauce was so bland it tasted like water. The Summer roll was the only highlight the only part that I enjoyed, and the peanut sauce hit the spot. The shrimp over vermicelli would have been good but again the fish sauce had no flavor and one of my shrimp was charred on 1 side. The Vietnamese sandwich with cold cuts (Banh mi dac biet) was missing something, nowhere near as good as Sau Voi Corp in Manhattan. I might give it one more try, if only because of the parking in the back, cleanliness and good service. but maybe next time Ill play it safe and order the phở.

Love this place! I always get the charbroiled pork Phở and the spring rolls! It is very cheap, too. They are closed on Mondays and I always crave it on Mondays :(!!!
Definitely worth it to go.

Huong Viet is probably one of the more authentic Vietnamese restaurants I’ve eaten at in North Jersey thus far. It’s located next to a law practice and across the street from apartments with no nearby parking lots – side street parking is all that is available, unfortunately. The place is actually larger than Binh Duong, though the outside suggests otherwise. While the owner didn’t talk with us much, he and his family seemed very friendly.
Ca Phe Sua Da ($ 3): The owner’s daughter brewed a great batch of iced coffee. The coffee retains a somewhat strong flavor profile, but is easily countered by the generous amounts of condensed milk she added. A lot of ice is added, which is exactly what I hoped for.
Goi Cuon ($ 4.50): Also referred to as «summer rolls» or «fresh spring rolls» by others, it’s probably the most popular Vietnamese appetizer to order. Each order comes with two rolls, but sliced into four pieces. They’re a bit smaller than what I’m used, but are packed with plenty of vermicelli, slices of pork, shrimp, and a variety of herbs. The peanut sauce has bits of peanuts mixed into the sauce already. I would have preferred a thicker sauce, though; their batch is not watery, but far from thick/“syrupy” also.
Banh Hoi Bo Nuong ($ 10.50): If you have never tried banh hoi before, you basically get three skewers of grilled beef (or whatever meat you choose), plenty of vermicelli, a stalk of basil, and six wedges of romaine lettuce alongside nuoc mam for dipping. The skewers of grilled beef were tender, grilled perfectly, and were lightly seasoned, while the vermicelli squares were cooked perfectly. The sauce isn’t sour – I’d say it’s «tangy» or «tart» at most. Huong Viet offers other meats and shrimp if you don’t fancy beef.
Banh Mi (one pork, one pâté) ($ 5/​ea): FINALLY! I’ve been scouring all of NJ for a place that makes banh mi with pâté and fortunately found another to add to my list! Whoever made the banh mi was generous with the amount of pâté, cha lua, ham, and vegetables. The sandwich itself is not as large as you’d expect from, say, Huong Lan or Lee’s Sandwiches in California but the flavor was all there. The same goes for the pork banh mi – ratio of pork to vegetables was on point. It’s a bit weird to see sesame seeds on the bread, but no biggie.
Service was great, but my table was the only one dining at the time, so just keep that in mind. Important to know: Food takes quite some time to be served as everything is cooked-​to-​order. The more customers there are, obviously, the longer is takes.

One of my favorite Vietnamese restaurants. Service is lackluster but it is more than compensated by the quality of the meals and the friendliness if the owner. This is a true mom and pop establishment. The food always tastes freshmade and not frozen or store bought like some other establishments. A somewhat tiny, never crowded spot on Park Avenue in Nutley.
We usually start off with the crispy squid appetizer. The crispiness of the batter belies the tenderness of the meat underneath. You get a lot of squid for the money. The homemade sweet and spicy sauce is delicious. Do yourself a favor and add some of the chili paste located on the table.
The phở is always good and plentiful. I am a fan of the the tenderloin and tendon, however the raw beef is equally delicious. You get the right amount of cilantro and holy basil. The right amount of heat is always there.
The specials are made with the same care and attention as if you were a guest in the owner’s home. I truly appreciate that the food is served without the usual pomp and circumstance that you find at local establishments that watch way too much Food Network shows. Skip the presentation and give me something that looks like a loving mom made just for me.
Do yourself a favor. Set aside some time and have a seat and enjoy the great food.

Not a connoisseur of Vietnamese food by any means but we really enjoyed this place. Came early on Halloween night so the place was not packed and service was fine. I could see the service being slower when busy, though.
I’m taking away one star only for the slightly weird smell upon entering. We got used to it, though, and it didn’t ruin our experience.
We ordered the spring rolls and the sweet potato/​shrimp nests for appetizers. Both delicious (and I would not have known what the pile of lettuce and mint were for if it weren’t for reading a previous Unilocaler’s review — but wrap your spring rolls in them and it is an awesome mix of favors/​textures). Highly recommend both, especially the sweet potatoes.
Had the rare beef phở and one of the lemongrass beef with curry dishes. Both excellent as well.
Overall, great experience. Would return.

Conveniently open on the day that Binh Duong in Bloomfield is closed (Tuesday).
My husband and I recently moved to Nutley and we’re trying to make our way through the local restaurants. We ordered takeout on a Saturday evening and I was pretty surprised to see this place absolutely dead on a Saturday at 8:00 pm. Place looked dingy, which made me nervous for the food situation.
I got the rare beef phở, he got some a steak entrée, and we got the pork with sticky coconut rice to share.
The phở is annoyingly packaged, unlike Binh Duong, which has it down to a science. They put their noodles in with their basil, bean sprouts, onions and lime, so if you’re not a big bean sprout person (like me) then you have to sit there and pick them out. The beef was fine, the broth was good but very cinnamon-​heavy, and I really was not a fan of their selection of a more broad rice noodle.
Husband’s beef rolls were okay. He had trouble chewing the beef in some pieces as it was either tough or overly fatty.
Pork with coconut rice was okay — nothing to write home in taste or portion size about at over $ 10 for an appetizer. The rice was a weird pink color.
I’d rather drive the extra 5 minutes to Binh Duong.

The Phở is as good as any other Vietnamese restaurant that I’ve been to especially for the price. I gave it three stars because their Grilled Lemongrass Chicken is not up to par…
The spring rolls are good and filling but they don’t use the traditional wraps…
I’ll have to try their Beef Cubes next time.

Probably one of the best authentic Vietnamese places in the area if you don’t feel like heading down to Bloomfield or Edison.
Dishes to order: summer rolls, spring rolls, hu tien (egg noodle soup with seafood), grilled pork chops, lemongrass shrimp
Their egg noodle soup is a little different here compared to other Vietnamese places I have dined at. It comes topped with fried onion pieces and a fried shrimp wonton that gives the broth a sweet delectable flavor.
Service is very very slow. So stay away if you don’t want to wait.
Décor and ambiance is pretty nonexistent. But it is byob if that helps!

*spring rolls (fresh, grated carrots, pork, vermicelli, spices inside, it was decent with lots of filling and thin wrapping; fish sauce was quite salty)
*phở tai (lots of soup, excessive liquid for a small portion of noodles; decent amount of meat but the beef was too tough; soup did not have enough flavor)
*bo luc lac (salty sauce; watercress; tomatoes; beef was a little tough but it was decent; came with the smallest plate of rice that was way too soft and mushy)
*sin to sau rin (not sweet enough; way too thick)
*rainbow ice (pretty good; need more coconut milk and beans)
Slowest service in the world!!! Food came out too slow; would NEVER go back!
If you want good Viet food around here, go to Binh Doung or head over to Jersey City

Mmmm this hit the spot for me. The place was empty on a rainy Thursday night so service was fast.
The squid appetizer was sooo good and the soup/​noodles were delicious. We had summer rolls too and I loved them.
One quip is that there were bones in the pork soup. Not sure if it’s traditional, but it was so delicious that I wished I could have chowed it down without picking small bones out of my mouth with each bite. Otherwise it was so flavorful and aromatic.
We came near closing and they wouldn’t let us have dessert because they were eager to leave. I thought that was funny, personally. It won’t stop me from coming back— I can’t wait.
