Go into this store. Talk to these people. The stories; the amazing stories they have. The gifts aren’t your average Martha’s Vineyard tourist junk. These gifts mean something a little bit more. My partner and I purchase a little bit of everything to give as souvenirs because our family and friends do not expect a hand-crafted wind chime, a jade Buddha, a gong, etc. This establishment calms me. I don’t know why, but I just love going here. I will ALWAYS spend money at this location.

Wandering along Circuit Avenue is a bit like traveling the world, and you can really get a sense of the island life in whaling days when boats were the primary transportation to foreign ports in far flung corners of the world. One of my best pals on the Vineyard travels to Tibet and brings back the strings of prayer flags that color the wind wherever they flutter, so I associate Tibetan culture with the Vineyard. This store is a haven of Tibetan culture, with luminous textiles, rugs, dresses, and shoes and prayer flags. It is worth a stop just to soak up a bit of the culture and experience the goods from the top of the world. The owners are attentive, but friendly, and make shopping at Glimpse of Tibet rewarding.

You know you give good gifts when you constantly see them in use. This winter, I discover that the beautiful scarves I gave to the female members of my family for Christmas over a year ago are the only ones they are wearing. And they all came from Glimpse of Tibet. The colors are stunning, the texture luxurious, and the price just right. All of the members of my gorgeous family always look amazing in their stylish winter garb, but in my opinion, the key ingredient is the scarf. This is a spacious, well laid out store in downtown Oak Bluffs, filled with books, jewelry, clothes, CDs, home décor, incense and those soft, colorful scarves. The owner is helpful but stays out of your way if you are just browsing. I am very happy to discover that my family really likes last year’s Christmas gifts so much and has not shoved them into the back of the closet with the loosely crocheted yellow vest with plastic bumble bee buttons Aunt Betty designed. I will definitely be buying more of these gems in the future.
