History

Established in 2011.

Ahimsa Yoga Studio in Oak Park, IL opened May 26, 2011. Kelly Merydith opened the studio on her own and shortly after her dad, Chuck, became a yoga instructor and started teaching free practice classes that fall. He finished his 500 hour certification from Moksha Yoga Center with Kelly 2 years later.

Ahimsa started out with a few yoga classes per day, mainly taught by Kelly. From the beginning Ahimsa offered Vinyasa Flow, Beginners, Hatha, and Gentle yoga classes.

Ahimsa students love the inclusive feeling they get from the instructors, desk staff, and other students. There is little competition and a high emphasis on doing no harm to yourself or others and working at your own level. Alignment and philosophy are key to Ahimsa classes, which help to provide an integrated yoga practice, not just a physical workout or stretch.

Meet the Business Owner

Kelly M.

Business Owner

A 2010 grad from Northeastern University in Boston, Kelly never expected to open a yoga studio so soon after graduating. Kelly was a Business Administration major with a double concentration in Finance and Marketing. After earning her degree, she went to California and got certified by YogaWorks to teach yoga. She has now completed her 500 hour certification with Moksha Yoga Center in Chicago. It was the stress of the financial world that lead Kelly to yoga, so she hopes to bring that same sense of calm and well-being to her students.

Kelly is leading a yoga teacher training with Cassandra Justine in the summer of 2016. She mainly teaches vinyasa flow and hatha classes. She loves alignment, philosophy, and bhakti yoga. Kelly lives and practices yoga in Santa Monica, CA where she runs the studio remotely and travels back and forth between there and Oak Park. She now co-owns 2 other studios with her business partner and best friend, Masin Ouksel (Ahimsa Yoga Studio Berwyn and Elmhurst).
