Design Studio 120 (formally J. Haidlen Design Associates) is a creative interior design firm that specializes in residential and commercial interior design services. Our imaginative team of designers, lead by Gretchen Arbini, can take your project from concept to completion. We offer a full spectrum of services including: space planning, selecting and providing fine furnishings, color, flooring, unique window coverings, quality accessories, and now remodeling and construction! After servicing Modesto, Oakdale, Turlock, and surrounding areas for over 30 years, we have the experience that you need to get your project done on time and under budget. History

Established in 1985.

Julia Dutton Haidlen started J. Haidlen Design Associates in 1982, from the library in her Oakdale home. Her passion for design had always been a constant in her life, and while listening to a sermon one Sunday, realized that this was her career calling. Soon word spread, the number of clients multiplied and her staff grew as the firm extended its services to include all aspects of residential, commercial and health care design.

In 1987, Julia moved the firm to 507 West F Street, in Oakdale. The famous Design House, as it is known today, is located in the heart of Oakdale. The craftsman style bungalow was built in 1909, and seemed a perfect fit for an Interior Design Firm. The the design offices were upstairs, leaving the downstairs of the 4,000 square foot mansion home to the retail store.

July 2013, J. Haidlen Design rebranded to Design Studio 120 and moved to it’s current location at 126 N. Yosemite Ave.

Meet the Business Owner

Gretchen A.

Business Owner

Gretchen Arbini has been an interior designer at J. Haidlen Design Associates since 2001. Her first project with the firm was designing and project managing a multi-​million dollar commercial facility remodel. From there Gretchen found her passion was not only interior design but also project management. With her knowledge and ability to lead, Gretchen has proven her talent for commercial design with several established clients.

In 2007, Gretchen earned her Class B Contractor’s License and in March of 2008, started J. Haidlen Design Construction Services, Inc. JHDCS is a sister company to J. Haidlen Design Associates, that allows for turnkey services. In addition to the firm providing interior design; they now oversee all bidding, demo, construction, and implementation.

Gretchen’s design philosophy centers on functional design. Not only is her goal on all projects to provide an aesthetic space, but a functional one for the end user.
