Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – Summit Campus in Oakland

Had a small laceration on my finger and couldn’t stop the bleeding for a couple hours. I remembered my tetanus shot was out of date so I decided to get myself in the ER.
45 minutes from checking in to being admitted. They cleaned the wound and put some skin glue on, have me a shot.
I have pretty good insurance but had to pay $ 300 to even leave. A couple weeks later I get another bill for $ 900 more. My insurance paid $ 800, so the whole bill was over 2k! For being there for less than 45 minutes total. Probably $ 20 in supplies. Fucking joke! I wish I could have known that I would have handled it myself.

My mother was admitted to Alta Bates Summit n OAKLAND on thanksgiving after suffering a stroke. Everyone was concerned the first few days. Finally I was told «well u know she’s 91 & has lived a good life» & we’re just going to make her comfortable. This sounds to me that you’re saying we don’t do much for old people. Where do these baby none caring doctors come from? Just because you’re 91 doesn’t mean ur live was good, I’m really thankful for some of the good (not all) nurses. She was discharged to a rehab & had to return because she had an infection at the feeding tube after spending several hours in the ER she was released and had to return within 48 hours because of the infection. There has been a problem with the feeding tube but the baby none caring doctor wanted to discharge her, so I filed an appeal (which was a waste of time & I was told I could file another appeal but if it is denied again then the patient will b responsible for the hospital bill. Don’t get old and get sick and go Alta Bates Summit. DON’T GET SICK in America!!!

I am rating the hospital café rather than the quality of the work that a lot of these fine Medical folks and doctors do.
So why is it that some of the people that work there don’t bother to pay attention to certain things. I wanted to pick up a bowl of however there was no label so when I asked one of the workers there he went to find one shorten the shoulders and continued on doing his work. In the meantime I was left there standing. I think that if you were at least going to run a café you should follow through with a request I could have an even accepted the answer that they didn’t have one or hold on a second man I’ll go find you one. Customer service should be applied to the cafeteria people also.
I do come commend all other staff on an exemplary customer service. I will always choose the summit pavilion to have all my work done.

This place is the worst emergency room ever. I took my grandma here and the nurses and doctors were so fake. As I am watching my grandma and praying for her life, I hear the same nurses and Doctor who pretended to be nice and comforting talk shit about clients/​patients. This is an emergency room and all clients who come here are facing life and death battles and it doesn’t help when the staff doesn’t have that professionalism. My family were in the room with my grandma and they wanted us to make a fast decision on where to send her. We were undecided on what to do because we wanted what was best for my grandma. We want her to live. I left to the restroom. Which was super disgusting and while I was walking back to the room, I heard a nurse talk shit about how we were indecisive. However to our faces she was nice. It was a really hard and one of the worst day of my life and it doesn’t help when you feel the staff that’s suppose to help your grandma doesn’t share the compassion for your loved one. If you work in the health field you should want to help the patient and care about patient’s health… I didn’t sense this here.

Came here for an emergency and it was the wrong one. Employees don’t work, they just talk about their personal life like its showtime television. Doctors aren’t friendly and chatter to much. The patient rooms are super dirty make you stay there for 4+ hours just to tell you nothing and make $ off of you Go to Kaiser much more informative, friendly and they know what they’re doing. The employees are suppose to check every hour regularly, but these people do it every 4 hours or if you complain to them, then they’ll do it

Waited for over a half hour when the ER was dead empty. The only other person there was a crazy homeless person who was sitting in the corner screaming at the wall, in between chatting with the security guard.
I had food poisoning and threw my back out. I just wanted an IV and some pain killers to get me through the night.
After getting a room and hooked up to an IV, I felt good enough to head home. They didn’t offer anything for the pain. I asked, and they gave me a script for some weak muscle relaxers. They refused to call the prescription in for me. When I asked again, they said that they have never called in a prescription to a pharmacy — really? I had to then go to the pharmacy and wait for another half hour while they filled my script. What kind of hospital or doctor can’t call in a prescription to a pharmacy?
I received a bill and it was over $ 3K that the hospital billed to my insurance company. $ 3K for less than an hour in the ER for an IV. It would have been less expensive for me to call the SF IV van that drives around giving degenerate alcoholics IVs when they are too hungover to function. Way to long of a wait for poor service and extremely high billing rates.

I was just recently a patient at Alta Bates Summit and must say they do a great job there. The doctors, nurses, assistants and all the way down to the car ride back that they were so nice to provide was just on point.
The facility is well taken care of and more than anything they made me feel comfortable making sure that I left when I was ready.
This particular hospital changes my viewpoint on what used to be my view of «All hospitals» I used to be on edge and have anxiety going to the doctors, but thanks to there lovely team of employees/​caretakers/​Lifesavers they changed my view on all hospitals cause this was a very good one for me to wind up at. Keep up the great work you all are amazing! :)

I was a patient at Alta Bates last month. I had a minor injury, and I had to board a plane in 2 hours. The staff was amazing. I was in and out and made my plane. Dr. Steve saw me right away, and he was very professional and personable. Additionally, the the staff went out of their way to help me and make sure that I was ok to fly. Thank you, Alta Bates!

I knew it wasn’t going to end will the minute we were in the er. I took my dad here because we trusted this hospital to treat him as he has been here before they have a record of him. Wrong. The minute they sent him into the er room they just wanted to pump him up with IV fluids. The nurse said she only wanted to administer about 240mL and to give her a shout when we see it go a certain level. Umm? Don’t you have a pump? It’s your job to monitor it. I am a cna and in nursing school, so I did everything I could to keep my dad comfortable. They did a ct and ultrasound. Doctor said he was thinking of starting my dad on lactulose within the next few days. Why not now? Why wait? They ended up admitting him and transferred him to his room where he was going to be staying for a few days. Now keep in mind my dad has a history of heart problems. I don’t know why they never thought to put a telemetry monitor to him. He was in pain and did not look well at all! We left at 11 pm and my sister stayed with him. At 5 in the morning we got a call that he’s not doing well. My dad ended up passing. But how? What happened? When I got there I spoke to Ray and asked him what happened? He said he was taking his vitals and my dad had a faint pulse so he called a code. Ok. I asked him about the tele monitor? He said my dad wasn’t showing symptoms of that when he was admitted. Ok… Later the charge nurse coming on shift came and talked to us in regards if we wanted to have an autopsy done. I asked her what happened. She said she believes it had to do with his heart? My frustration just kept growing. Where is the dr? Why didn’t they start him on lactulose for his liver? Why wasn’t he being more closely monitored? There is no doubt that my dad left us too soon. But I know he did not receive the proper care that he should have received.

I have never been a patient or have been treated by this hospital so I will not criticize the type of care that a person may receive here, but as a person who had the pleasure of accompanying his mother to this hospital I will openly state my experience here.
My mother and I arrive here at 10:30 am for her surgrey. The first person we met were the parking attendants who were very kind and attentive to my mothers’ disability and aided her into the building. Next admission was another delightful experience. The young lady at the desk was very pleasant and positive and escorted us to our next destination only got better and that was the two marvelous co– workers on the third floor in posted –op.
However after she went to surgrey for what was supposedly a four hour procedure the excellent rapport between between myself and the hospital staff ended.
You see I waited for five hours in the Family Resource Center, until it close, for someone to connect me about my mother and her procedure. Yet no one connected me, even thought the hospital had my repeatedly requested my cell number.
So after leaving the Family Resource Center I was instructed to wait were we checked in at 10:30 pm, but the place was empty. At 11 PM my mother arrived from surgery. No explanation was given and that is the way my day ended with no explanation.

I just had a really inexcusable interaction at this ER. My young adult daughter worked today, even though she was sick. It’s Sunday and she knew they couldn’t find a replacement. Since it was Sunday, immediately after work, she went to the Summit ER and requested a strep test. The physician pronounced she probably didn’t have strep because she didn’t have lesions on her throat. She explained that she’s had strep before, she knows what it feels like, and she didn’t have lesions then, either.
The physician gave her a strep test but said the results wouldn’t be available for 72 hours (WHAT??? You can go to your doctors office and get an instant strep test, but not at the ER? Seriously?) He sent her away, telling her to take three ibuprofen (really!). As she was leaving, she heard the same physician prescribing antibiotics to the patient next door, deciding on the spot she DID have strep.
Who needs an actual medical test when you can tell by looking at someone?
She also explained that her shift starts too early Monday morning to get a test, but she doesn’t want to go to work and infect others if she does have strep. Too bad for her, and them, I guess.
I just called the ER to talk to the doc, and a Rene answered the phone without giving her title. I told her the situation and said I was confused about what happened. I asked to speak to the physician and she acted like that was an outrageous request. She treated me like I was an idiot, and kept repeating the same things over and over again. Guess what Rene? My father is a surgeon, I practically grew up in hospitals, and I’ve been working in health care for 30 years. I’m not an idiot, and I can recognize careless, incompetent, and insensitive care when I see it.
Don’t go to Summit if you want someone to give you competent health care, or even treat you like a human being.
Oh and guess what. I just called ER Direct, and they were really nice and just as puzzled as I was about this story; they said, «Well, did they write her a prescription she could take if it doesn’t feel better? Maybe you should call them back and ask them to do that.» Well, I knew they wouldn’t, so I called our primary care doc, and she immediately wrote a prescription which I’m filling now.

I flew in from LA and caught a late flight to visit my dad who’d been hospitalized after major surgery. When I arrived I was horrified to find my dad writhing in pain. His nurse, who I noticed in the hallway noticing me arriving, came into the room after I did. She asked my dad to score his pain on a 1 – 10 scale. He said 8, so she had him pop some Norco. My dad could barely talk or think straight when he saw me because of how painful he was. When the nurse left, I asked if he had been like this all day, to which he replied no. But he did explain with much difficulty that he asked for pain medication more than 30 minutes ago. Really? It was after midnight and hardly busy. I hate to say I suspect the nurse came to the room only because she noticed me coming!
My dad expressed that he was feeling some hunger pains — very painful ones. He was on a liquid diet and the broth he requested be reheated for his dinner never got back to him — ridiculous! I walked to the nurses’ station and stood there ignored for several minutes while two nurses continued to chat amongst each other. Um, excuse me? My dad never got his soup reheated and may he have a popsicle, too? Defensively, one nurse replied that she wasn’t the one to bring his soup in the first place. Hey, that’s great but my point is — can he please get some soup now? (Moron…)
Thank goodness for the charge nurse who ended up bringing the broth up to him personally and being warm and friendly. We explained the situation to her and she offered some IV pain medications in a couple hours to follow and tried to seem understanding/​apologetic. Finally some empathy and quality care!
My dad has been sick and coming here for 2 years now and, unfortunately, my family has seen the quality of care decline here.

The new building is amazing! I am so in love. I am currently a vocational nursing student and this place would be the dream job. The staffs are so passionate about their jobs. From what I’ve seen, its hard to find that kind of team! The rooms are also great and spacious. New technology and its so organized. I couldn’t stop observing my grandfather’s room and imagining what it’d be like to work here. Definitely how other facilities should look like because everything is set out to help the staff make their jobs a little more easier.

Before we get the bill, which I know will be astronomical, I would like to thank the Alta Bates Emergency Room people for being so kind to my husband Paul Dresher today, June 6, 2015: they were wonderful. Special commendation to Richelle! She is such a love.

This place is a complete and utter joke. I came here after I started experiencing unstoppable tremor-​like movements one weekday evening. I was there from around 7:30pm-2:30am…without a break from the extreme shakes.
They must have asked me at least 7 times if I had taken any medications or illegal drugs; and only stopped after my pee and blood results tested negative.
The doctor that checked me out was a complete moron; literally I’m still baffled on how she got licensed. She first pulled me aside and asked if anyone was abusing me, which I understand is standard… but I told her no and she did a pregnant pause complete with a judgmental side eye; followed with an ‘…ok…’ to see if I was going to spill some mellow dramatic story. For the record I am 27 years old, live alone, and work for Google. I am aware that abuse happens across all social economic statues and what not; but honestly?
She then proceeded to go on about how she reviewed my chart and saw that I started a new job… she blamed that for potentially causing me to have extreme anxiety. I started my job in November. It was March when I went to the ER. Try again sweetheart… besides while I do have stressful days at work I know for a fact that it was not causing extreme anxiety.
She proceeded to do some sort of BS ‘neurology’ test in the room to see if I had a stroke. Once that was done she said, «I think you’re perfectly fine.» Keep in mind that I was STILL shaking. I’m not talking about a little shoulder shiver… I’m talking Reagan from the Exorcist in the bed shaking. How on earth did she expect me to leave the ER like that?! She also implied that I may have been making it up. Ummm for 7 hours?
I demanded having some sort of muscle relaxer or medication to calm the shaking down at the very least, which she agreed to. Overall it was a horrible experience. The entire staff truly lacked any sort of empathy with the exception of one nurse. I understand that people from all walks of life use this ER, but to quickly pass judgement and assume that I was drugged out, being abused, or making it up. Both my mother and father came to my aid at the ER; they too were shocked at the treatment and lack of empathy from the staff.
When I got up to leave since my prescription was taking FOREVER a nurse asked if I could wait for another 20 minutes. When I told her no she proceeded to tell me «well sorry, we had a few cardiac situations tonight… we’re over here trying to save lives.» Unbelievable.
Turns out I have a vitamin B1 deficiency which happens to be incredibly dangerous if gone untreated. So no honey, I was not ‘perfectly fine’ in fact I’m actually quite lucky that I didn’t fall into a coma or worse.
Save yourself a headache and go elsewhere for Urgent Care. I paid over $ 700 to be told that I was making my symptoms up. What a waste.

Been here since 6:30 haven’t been seen yet!!! only 4 ppl waiting for help… What the fuck is this places problem… So f****** ghetto here staff walking around like playground… don’t come to this place if you need emergency help. They only see one person per hour

My grandma was admitted to the ER via ambulance and then admitted so I can’t review wait times. The staff is super friendly (both ER and hospital), the rooms are beautiful, modern, big, private and clean. The communication with the hospital team is acceptable, not the best but pretty good. I would chose to be admitted here if I was to he hospitalized.

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE DOCTORS OFFICE ACROSS FROM THE HOSPITAL.
I had my first two appointments at this building. The first appointment was for an ultrasound and one was for a follow up appointment for the ultrasound. The one thing I was worried about was parking because parking in Oakland is either sometimes impossible or way too expensive. I was relieved to know that there was a parking garage right next to where my appointment was, this was great (and not at a bad price either!). At both of my appointments, the staff here was really nice and made sure that I was in and out of my appointments as quickly as possible. They seemed like they really enjoyed their job and cared for their patients. The cardiologist that I worked with was really nice and showed concern for my condition. Everyone is great here and if I ever needed to come back here for whatever reason, I would feel comfortable doing so.

Unlike Seton hospital in Daly City, this hospital does not require a visitor’s pass and there is no security. I guess it doesn’t need any?
The building looks like it’s been there for awhile but it is still a nice facility. Elevators have the front and rear door exists which makes it surprising of which door is going to open. Patient’s room is a tad bit smaller than the ones in Seton and machines looks to be outdated. Because I’ve never been a patient here, I can’t speak on the nursing experience.
Nice facility and it’s huge! I generally do not like hospitals, who does? But given the location and the space, I’d give it 4 stars.
