We are the Bay Jiu-Jitsu Academy
Our vision is to offer accessible and world class training to people of all ages, sizes, genders, and backgrounds in the multiple athletic programs offered. We serve not only athletes, but anybody looking to learn new skills, get in shape, have fun, and join our community.
Programs
We deliver the best in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, self-defense, fitness, and acroyoga. We have classes for adults and children. Our jiu jitsu team participates in local, state, national, and international tournaments, but many of our members practice jiu-jitsu for the sake of fun, fitness, and overall self-defense. We strive to have welcoming classes to all people by having classes in Spanish and women’s only training times. Our mission has always been to provide top-notch Jiu-Jitsu instruction but also to maintain an atmosphere of inclusivity.
History
Established in 2008.
The Bay Jiu-Jitsu Academy was founded in 2008 by Stephan Goyne and initially housed inside of K-One Fitness in San Francisco. Three years later, the academy got its own home with the opening of the first facility in Japantown SF in July of 2011. The academy grew in July of 2012 with the opening of the second facility in Oakland/Piedmont. The most recent addition to the academy was in July of 2013 with the opening of the third and biggest facility in Mission SF.

Stephan G.
Business Owner
Stephan has been training and competing in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu since 1998. He received his black belt in 2010 from Professor Eduardo Rocha after winning 6 gold medals at brown belt level in various national and international tournaments (2010 IBJJF Houston International: Gold, 2009 California Classic: Gold, 2009 NAGA East Coast: Gold, 2010 Copa Pacifica: Gold, 2009 IBJJF American Nationals: Gold, 2009 American Cup: Gold). He has ten solid years of adult teaching experience as well as developing radically different models for teaching Brazilian jiu-jitsu to children. His personal philosophy regarding martial arts is that it should be accessible and inviting to all, regardless of gender, sexual orientation or fitness level. He also coached gymnastics for children and adults at Head over Heels, Santa Cruz Gymnastics and Kid in Motion for nearly 8 years from 1996 – 2004. In addition, he is a California Certified classroom teacher having taught in Oakland Unified School District for 6 years.
