Diana C Yuen, OD

I went to Diana for an updated prescription, and was very pleased with the service. They took care of my insurance paperwork, offered me a drink, and the whole staff was really nice. Diana was very patient, and gave me good advice on how to handle my deteriorating eyesight (not quite ready for bifocals yet).
She is gonna be my go-​to eye doc from now on!

I suspect those who wrote the interminably long negative reviews came in with an agenda. I’ve been seeing Dr yuen and Dr Yu for ten years, and am completely happy with the staff and doctors. They are at the same time highly professional and still quite personable.
Prices are comparable to previous optometry providers. If you want a small, professional office, this is the place to go.

Not a big fan of this place. The optometrist I saw, Dr. Cheung was nice and thorough with my exam but overall, I am disappointed with the office. I have VSP so apparently I would have more than $ 1000 of savings if I went with getting a new pair of glasses. At first, I looked around in the store and found a pair of Dior glasses that I liked. However, since I mainly wear contact lenses and the prescription of my glasses had not increased, I thought I would not be saving if I didn’t need the item in the first place so I decided to just get contacts. I asked to get a copy of my prescription at check-​out just for my record. I know optometry offices may feel reluctant to give out prescriptions because they are afraid that patients would just buy glasses or contacts online. I am not one to do that. I mainly wanted to keep a record just in case something happens to my glasses or contacts and I was not available to get to the store, especially since I will be traveling this winter. When I asked for my prescription, the woman said she would send a PDF copy to my e-​mail right away. However, I never received it. A few days later, when I went back to pick up my contacts, I reminded them again to send me a copy of my prescription, the woman again said she’s «sending it right now.» Again, never got it. I called a couple days after and asked for a receipt as I need it to submit my claim for my flex account and again, reminded them to send me a copy of my prescription. Oddly enough, I received my receipt in the e-​mail a few minutes after the phone call but there was no prescription. I even responded to the e-​mail saying, thanks, can I also get a copy of my prescription? No answer. Finally, the FIFTH ATTEMPT, I went into the office after work and asked for my prescription… no more «sending it to me right away» this time, I wanted my paper copy right there and then. The office staff finally gave it to me. I have never had to ask this many times for anything in my life and especially with something so trivial as getting a prescription from your optometrist. That being said, I will not be coming back to this office next year, probably will try Dr. Moonsamy on Lakeshore next time.

Like others, I to have had a negative experience here. I would like to say I gave two stars because of the helpful women at the first desk. She was great.
Unfortunately there are a lot of hidden costs here. The eye exam took most of my allowance and they only seem to sell one type of lens. The most expensive of course. My prescription is very low and do not need to polycarbinate lenses. The eye doctor was condescending while talking to me during my eye exam which I did not appreciate. I also asked them to email me my prescription so I can get my lenses elsewhere. They have not emailed me yet even though I sent a follow-​up email requesting the prescription.
I would shop around unless you have unlimited income to spend.

My wife and I have been going here for a number of years. Why… because of their professionalism and expertise. I love the new automated way they make appointments and send reminders. There is a lot of turn over in the office staff but that is not a problem. Dr. Yuen is very accomplished and clear. Recently I had an emergency that required a quick solution. Usually a 2 – 3 week process was completed in 6 days. It got done because Dr. Yuen and her staff stepped up big time.

I have Kaiser, but also have great vision coverage through another provider. I needed a contact lens fitting appointment asap because I was getting married in a short three weeks and Kaiser Oakland’s next available appointment was a month away (including 5 of their other vision centers I called in the east bay/​sac area). In a frenzy I contacted some private offices on my coverage list. Dr. Yuen’s office was able to get me in the next day! Their customer service is exceptional, especially the girl at the front desk. So personable and helpful! Dr. Yuen is so nice, intelligent and receptive. They have state of the art equipment, and are so accommodating !!! I would highly recommend this practice!

Came to Dr. Yuen and staff after previous optometrist made lens for my expensive Oakley sunglasses, breaking a temple hinge while adjusting. Neither original optometrist or Oakley would back up the frame purchase or the lens install.
Bought a replacement Oakley frame from eBay and took everything to Dr. Yuen’s location on my partner’s suggestion. All the doctors, and especially the office and tech staff were very understanding. Knowing that I was paying twice for frames, they agreed to attempt switching out the prescription lens.
They moved the lens to the replacement frame, calling me several hours later to tell me their work was successful.
When I returned the next day to pick up the glasses, they told me there would be
NO CHARGE, and they hoped I would consider them for my future eyeglass needs.
No question, these are the folks I will trust for eye care while living in the Bay Area.

I recommend this practice to everyone I know and to strangers who ask where I got my great-​looking glasses. I have been seeing Dr. Yuen for many years. She is very thorough, knowledgeable and incredibly nice. She always explains all my vision changes.
The staff is also very efficient and nice. They have a fantastic selection of frames and are great at helping you find something that looks good on you. I feel very lucky to have such a good practice close to home.

Dr. Yuen and her staff are incredibly professional. I would not go anywhere else. Period.

I would like to start by saying why I am reluctant to write this review.
I have had a history dating a year and a bit for this optometrist.
Starting from the very beginning I found this is be a pretty strange place.
Customer service is the MOST important thing to me — I understand that the Bay Area is a little off when it comes to people just being pleasant and nice — I have to try harder to accept that. I have been in the hospitality industry my entire life so being chipper all the time isn’t other peoples natural instinct. I found it strange (as many people have commented on) that when you go into the office, you don’t really get greeted and when you are, it is pretty cold. The staff with the exception of Raj (who I understand defected from behind this Iron Curtain) are plain odd. Not unkind, not necessarily unpleasant, just strange — it is a like an alternate universe of people who have zero personality. Again, not mean — just weird — like their souls have been removed. I got two pair of glasses through this place — one the one pair, the gal helping me was so sour and so unpleasant, there was no feedback or anything else from her. She was like a Pillsbury Doughboy person. Just lifeless. The same goes for all the staff who just make little things into things that are so much bigger. I think they need to get real. You’re nothing but minimum wage paper pushers — you’re not the doctor and you probably don’t have degrees. I went in to pick up another pair of glasses and brought an ill fitting pair of sunglasses with and asked if they could just heat them and then cinch them so they fitted a little more snugly — simple enough? NO! not for these folks… you’d think I had asked them to give themselves a lobotomy and hand me their brains.
I have to give a star for two things — one being that the nice lady (the one sans a mullet) did follow up with me the first time I complained. And, I needed an emergency set of contacts and they gave me one albeit for a stocking fee, which was totally acceptable.
I finally did sit down to write this review because I went in to get my prescription from them to take to my new doctor and they told me that my prescription expired in April. Nevermind that when I went into the office and stood quietly at the Front Desk I was ignored by the lady who was sitting behind the desk — she was so engrossed in another conversation, she couldn’t even turn around and say «hi» (two letter word). The doctor himself was also standing at the desk and he didn’t even look up either. I think a lot of reviews allude to the detachment of the staff an the unethical financial practices and I must attest that this has been my experience 100%
Lo and behold I just received a letter from 1800 contacts saying my prescription only expires at the end of the month. I know that these money grabbing folks only told me that in an effort to get me to come in.
I will be reporting this to their board and I urge people to consider going to Dr. Moonsamy just on the other side on Lakeshore. Better product, better staff (friendly and sweet) and just all round more ethical.

I’m agreeing with others here who have cited this office for «hidden costs.» 100% true, and it looks like the office has done nothing to actually change this.
I was told before entering the office that my comprehensive eye examination would be covered by my insurance. When I went in: (1) the staff person had actually listed the wrong (my former) insurance, even though I took 30 minutes out of a day two weeks back to explain that I had new vision care coverage (and she looked up the information). I had to then promptly spend 20 more minutes explaining this (after a 30-​minute wait); (2) I left the office with a $ 225 bill, which was shocking. I come from a family of optometrists and have NEVER seen a bill this high before. When I called back to ask the staff about the cost breakdown, the staff person sounded very uncomfortable, almost as though it was an imposition that I was asking her to breakdown an inflated bill. She said she would call me back, but never bothered to return my phone call.
Yes, the optometrist I saw was fine, etc., but the office needs to be transparent about cost breakdowns. I will be asking for my files the next time I’m in (this week) and avoiding any other costs/​services with this office.
I also see that one of the owners of the business keeps replying back to negative reviews on Unilocal,l asking how the office could be better. Here they are: (1) Train your staff to be more knowledgeable and respectful to customers when they ask questions related to billing; (2) Be transparent. Break down all the potential costs with the patient BEFORE you proceed with testing, rather than assuming that you should continue with tests that the patient may not be able to afford. It’s horrible and unprofessional.

I have been going to Dr. Yuen for over 15 years for my annual eye exams. Dr. Yuen is extremly thoughful in her explanations and very thorough with the exam. The Office Staff is very friendly and welcoming. The selection of frames is the best I’ve seen and the opticians are very knowledgable. Over the years I have sent many friends to Dr. Yuen, all have responded positively to my recommendation. Truly, the best place in town!

My exam with Dr. Yu was great. I would highly recommend him. The staff is nice and they were accommodating when I absolutely hated the sunglasses I’d chosen and let me switch them out (you can only do that once though). The one thing that I really disliked is that the pricing for glasses isn’t transparent — the final price, with insurance, was pretty shocking. I would give them 5 stars for the exam but honestly probably 2 stars for buying frames.

I wish I could say good things about this place. I bought frames last February. For the first 4 weeks the frames needed adjustments then subsequently every two weeks then my frustration of every month and led to not wearing the glasses. I called the office and they indicated that I should have returned the glasses within the first 30 days. Very frustrated they did not even see the glasses were not working and now will not return these glasses because they do no see the frames are defective. Bad customer service and inability to work with customers.

This review is for Grand Lake Optometry and Dr. Angela Cheung. The front staff is really nice and I was seen promptly by the doctor, they offer a lot of tests to look at everything from peripheral vision to focus etc. you almost feel like you are getting an eye grade, I passed. Dr. Cheung was very informative and efficient with her exam, looking at everything from the type of tears I have to my blink (I have oily tears and a half blink).
Their selection is not too extensive, but they offer good brands like Oliver people, dita, masunaga, etc and if you know the brand has a style they don’t have on hand, they’ll order it in for you for $ 25 and the fee can be used to pay for the frames if you do get them. Yay for accessories for my face.

I’ve been going to Diana Yuen probably since she’s been in business, the 80s, I venture to guess. I’ve always felt like a valued customer, one whose well-​being is truly the center focus. My prescriptions over the decades have always been accurate and I have never experienced any problems with service.
I love the location and the office is quite pleasant. My most recent visit was November 21, the day after my 61^st birthday.

I have been seeing Dr. Yuen and Yu for more than 7 years. They are wonderful! Always explain everything so I can understand. Their staff is really welcoming and super friendly.
My last visit turned up some possible medical issues and Dr. Yu explained why he might be concerned and referred me to an eye specialist. They always take such good care of me. I wouldn’t trust my eyes to just anyone. They are truly wonderful!

I called several Offices and Dr Yu was very glad to see me, ASAP I had some allergic reaction to who knows what. My eyes were itchy and swollen. Thought I was going to pull my eye out and could not wear make up period. Dr Yu gave a very involve exam of my eyes. sent me out to get otc drops. When I placed the first drops in my eyes I wanted to sing it felt so much better. One week later i felt much better. I should have called his office first. Thank you Dr Yu!

The staff sets the tempo each and every time; no questions here!
While living in Oakland last year, I actually walked in to inquire if they accept my insurance, they do. They talked over the basics with which my insurance covers and assisted me in making my first appointment; plus all my appointments since.
I’ve been seen by Dr. Yuen and Dr. Yu –both are passionate and thorough.
