Ile Omode African-Centered Preschool & Elementary School

A hidden gem of the city. Love this school, love the concept and the dedication of all of the teachers and staff. wish there were more institutions like this in the country.

I am a firm believer that a good educational facility is paramount for the health and development of children. To that end, I have chosen private over public, independent over religious and small over large. Although I am African-​American and Hispanic, it has never been important for me to have my child in a school where other kids may «look» like him. I suppose I always thought it was better for him to be in a place where more affluent children went to school (I know there are so many things wrong with that statement).
I discovered Ile Omode by accident. I was on assignment as a photojournalist and discovered that the quality of the school was a better story than my original subject interview. The kids receive fresh, hot meals, cooked by a loving and talented chef daily! The administrative staff and teachers know every child and family and fellowship with them like they’re part of a small community. I witnessed the children playing the piano, drums, horns, saxophones and engaged in classical/​modern dance. They learn advanced math, web design, foreign language and other advanced subjects that you wouldn’t expect to see in a small school. The physical education program is like none I’ve witnessed (the kids are actually made to participate and engage in physically challenging tasks).
Honestly, the school reminds me of the small school environment I had as a child when everyone had a stake in your success. I enjoyed the school so much that I recruited two family members to enroll their children! They fit in well and love the environment. I now volunteer there because I believe in what they’re doing for the community.
