they get 2 because they sell goat and the guy i dealt with was friendly. they should get 1 star though. the goat i purchased was 99% fat. after making a giant pot of curry goat i had to throw the whole thing away. there was no meat. just fat. disgusting. the meat on display is an illusion. plus i asked where the meat was from… ie how local is it. the guy didn’t have a foggiest idea where it came from.

One of the best things about living in Old Oakland can also be one of the worst things… selection, selection, selection! If you want to pick up some steaks, some chicken or fish the opportunities are endless. There’s numerous places in Chinatown, you could hit the supermarket or you can come to Jack’s. I like Jack’s. The meat is fresh and the service is with a smile. The selection while not deep is enough for anyone looking to throw something on the Barbie. Enjoy!

I stopped in for a sandwhich at the deli counter, and the woman whom took my order had a hard time understanding what I wanted on my sandwhich. I ordered a simple ham sandwhich with american cheese(only had two types of cheeses to choose from — what is that all about your a deli and don’t offer more cheeses). Nothing except Mayo on my sandwhich. She had to ask me 4 times what I wanted on it, I just repeated myself several times. I will not be going back. — BADSERVICE when you have to make your customers repeat themselves more than once.

Located in Old Oakland’s Housewives’ Market, Jack’s has a very good meat counter and one of the largest selections of African groceries in the area. There is a good selection of poultry including duck and a few different brands of chicken that include Perdue, Rocky and Hudson Valley. In addition to the usual cuts of beef, lamb and pork, Jack’s sells goat meat, hog maws(pig stomachs), fresh chitterlings, tripe, oxtails, cow’s feet, pigs feet and pigs ears. There are shelves of African canned good and jars of African spices. Dried fish, flours, rice, beverages and other items are available. A small produce section carries large Ghana yams.
