I have been building custom homes since I was 16 years old. I dug ditches, moved piles of dirt, lumber, wet dirt, and more lumber. worked my way up through the painful ranks to where I am now. I am the superintendent of a company in Oakland. Quite a bumpy ride to get here.
I have never received such a professional, prompt, and aventagious attitude from a company. I work some insane hours. I send out emails at all hours. Not once. not one damn time, did I not get a response from either Gigi or some, polite, educated staff member to assist me.
I can assure you these people should write a business plan and sell it. Gigi has that machine operating at a higher level than most.
In just under a month she had 3 sets of engineered plans drawn, stamped and ready for submittal to the lovely city of Berkeley E3 program. (exterior elevated elements)

Absolutely amazing. I have an old house that has been treated to a fair amount of neglect over its 70 year life. Gigi and her team made it sparkle like new. Inside and out. The house was completely transformed on time and on budget. Gigi and her team are completely amazing from start to finish. She handled everything from a beautiful, functional design to dealing with the city, and executing a flawless construction project. Everything was extremely well organized and the results are beautiful.
First off, the construction is top notch. Everything looks flawless and is constructed with high quality materials. The workmen were all professional, polite, and above all helpful. Everyone I worked with at Lorick went above and beyond in terms of attentive customer service. Her foreman, Mike, would answer all manner of emailed questions at night and on weekends. Right away. Even on holidays. Anything I wanted done I just had to ask. All concerns I had during the build were addressed and taken care of immediately.
Everything went amazingly smooth. And this was a project that involved rewiring the main junction box, putting in a new water heater in the opposite part of the house, and adding electricity, gas and water to an addition. They even worked around our furniture and washer and dryer. In fact, the whole utility upgrade went off without more than an hour or two without water or gas. And this was over the course of months. They even replumbed our washer and dryer 5 or 6 times to prevent us from having to use a laundry mat.
In addition, to doing beautiful work, they also work with amazing precision and efficiency. They had to build us a new roof during the one period of rain we had at the end of last year, and we didn’t have one leak. They ensured that they had the right number of people on the job each day to get the necessary work done. And they were on time every day. During active construction, people showed up every morning at 8am sharp. Everyday I came back from work, I could see the project moving forward by leaps and bounds.
Gigi herself is a pleasure to work with. She is a consummate professional with a kind heart and a discerning eye for craftsmanship. The workmen know that she demands perfection and so are careful to work to a high standard because they know that Gigi will not hesitate to make them do it again. Gigi personally reviews the cost, the work, and the progress of the project and was always completely on top of what was going on.
I feel fortunate to have had Lorick Construction work on my home. Everyone who works for her is a professional craftsman who knows their trade. The exterior paint job that was done was dazzling in it’s detail. Every last corner of the house was brightened and restored to a level I never imagined possible for a poor old, neglected 1940’s 3 bedroom. The house was restored to original condition on the outside and amazingly better than original inside. Gigi even spec’d out and installed custom milled, redwood siding from a mill in Northern California. Interior paint was perfect too. Not a line out of place. They insulated the attic and installed central heating and now all the draftiness of the house is gone. The house was literally transformed inside and out.
If you are going to remodel, you should call Lorick. I can’t recommend them highly enough.

When we first bought our house in Berkeley 5 years ago we contacted Lorick Design to do a remodel. They created a brand-​new kitchen for us in a challenging space, created a new master bathroom from a tiny spare bedroom, replaced the roof and the furnace, installed a gas line to our fireplace, replaced a number of windows, reinforced a retaining wall, and poured a concrete pad to accommodate a hot tub. The work is stunning (see photos). They are very professional, knowledgeable, accommodating, and friendly.
Lorick Design is not the cheapest contractor around, but they provide significant quality for the money. Gigi Lorick creates beautiful designs. She has a terrific esthetic sense, and uses her considerable knowledge and experience to create solutions that will work well for us. Her crew are competent and careful, and they implement Gigi’s creative solutions beautifully.
Gigi is very picky, and when any work ends up lower than her high standard of quality for beauty and function, she redoes the work until it is right. She also provides a terrific quality warranty: if any problems arise with the finished project, Lorick Design will send someone to fix the problem at no additional cost — even years later. The level of care from all who work at the company is very high.
Because of how impressed we were with Gigi’s initial remodel on the house we hired her again four years later to create some new outdoor spaces for us. The work included a lot of demolition of old concrete surfaces, building a redwood deck, installing a gas firepit, reshaping the hillside, and pouring a beautiful, curved retaining wall and stairs that reminds us of Gaudi architecture. She also created a stunning artificial stream for us as a water feature.
One thing we really like about Gigi is that if a problem is discovered, or if there is anything that we are not satisfied with, she works hard to set it right. She cares about our opinions and wants to make sure we are satisfied. We recommend her company highly.

I LOVE my kitchen! I hired Lorick Design & Construction to do the design and remodel. Gigi Lorick, the principal, is fantastic – she provides end-​to-​end service because she is a general contractor and designer with 20+ years of experience. I had a good-​sized, but odd-​shaped kitchen that needed updating. Gigi has excellent taste and design sense — she transformed the space into a beautiful and functional contemporary kitchen that works with the existing architecture while significantly increasing storage space. She is full of great suggestions, but is also adept at listening to my ideas and incorporating them into the design. Her staff and crew are skilled, responsive, professional and delightful to work with! I highly recommend Lorick Design & Construction for help with home improvement projects big and small.

After reading the reviews, thought we’d give this company an opportunity for a bid. We quickly decided NOT to use them. Rude and unprofessional, we thought if this was the way we are treated before construction begins, we could only imagine how difficult it would be to live through a house remodel with this company. We have found another AMAZING, construction and design firm locally and are ecstatic with their results. Our advice, steer clear!

Contracted Lorick C & D to handle Kitchen remodel few years ago. Gigi (proprietor) had great ideas and recommendations for our project. She didn’t push for the most expensive ideas, just the best for our needs and wants. As with most major construction jobs, there were snafu’s along the way (supplier sending inferior cooktop). Supplier wanted to fix appliance, we insisted on another new one, not a refurbished one. After being rebuffed by Frigidaire, Gigi stepped in and somehow persuaded them to ship a new one.
Although the cost of the project was not the most inexpensive bid, «you get what you pay for» axiom applied here. Nothing but quality work and good ‘follow thru’ .
One of the negatives here is that there is no staff available on week ends… this made it inconvenient at times when trying to schedule face-​to-​face communication during normal weekdays (Mon — Fri) *

I want to tag on to the review of Lorick Design and Construction. We just bought a home in Oakland, a neglected foreclosure, which came with little information and no previous owners to speak with since it was bank owned. I was looking for free estimates related to foundation and retaining wall and went on Service Master site which gave me several recommendatons. I called a couple and they wanted $ 250 for an estimate — we were still not sure we even wanted this house — so we did not want to pay for additional estimates. When I called Lorick, they returned my call right away and Brian D met me at the site. He looked the place over thoroughly and rendered an opinion which was positive enough to assist in our eventual decision to purchase the house. Following that, we contracted with Lorick to do a really quick renovation before we moved in — they did what was needed in record time and recommended add-​ons to the work which led to making the house more attractive and liveable. I decided to use my own carpet company instead of their recommendation — Jim of French Brothers (Oakland) was totally amazed when he saw the place before and after — he said a renovation like ours would normally take about 4 months, not 3 weeks. Anyway, Kudos to Gigi, Brian and Miguel, the manager of our project. Write me any time for a reference.

Gigi Lorick is a designer with great ideas, extremely responsive and easy to work with. The construction crew is swift, competent and they will totally clean site before they leave. Highly professional standard quality of work.
We felt under pressure to move into the house from our rental and the speed in which this job was completed is amazing. Loricks Construction and Design Companies competence allowed us to move in on schedule. Trust me that was quite a feat.
