Owner Julie Harleman brings over 12 years experience in the denim industry to provide quality denim and wearable everyday basics in a comfortable, engaging and low-​key setting. We offer personalized service to every customer to find the best fitting jeans, stock a full range of sizes and styles for both men and women, and can special order almost anything. Products are selected for quality, fit, and ethical and sustainable manufacturing practices with special attention paid to American and 1st-​world production.

History

Established in 2014.

When a fire at her old job at Slash in Berkeley, California ended her 12 year career as a buyer and store manager, Julie Harleman moved quickly to open her own space where she could continue to provide one on one personal assistance to assist people in finding the best fitting pair of quality denim.

I am the owner, Julie, and I am super stoked to be in Oakland helping people find good fitting jeans. Maple Street Denim is a one-​woman show and this is a long time dream of mine. I try my very best to make my shop a comfortable and positive place to be. If you have ever have a problem when you come to Maple Street Denim, I encourage you to have a conversation with me in person rather than resort to yelp.

This is my go-​to local spot for Happy Feet socks. Love Julie the owner. She is a smart and funny as all get out. She used to be at Slash in Berkeley and has been in the jeans business for a long time. Glad to see her on her own in beautiful downtown Oakland.

This is the best place to buy jeans in the east bay. The owner is always there and works to find the perfect fit and style for you. The place is clean and open. If you are looking for quality, made in USA jeans, and attentive service, this is the place. They also have accessories and other cool stuff by local designers. Love this spot!

Maple Street is far and away the best spot for men’s denim in the Bay Area. Their pieces are painstakingly selected and the staff are knowledgeable and helpful. They’ll NEVER sell you something that looks lousy on you just to make a sale — they’re straight up and will work with you to make sure you leave looking as good as you possibly can. Prices are extremely fair as well. Cannot recommend this place highly enough!

I love this place and I love Julie. The owner works with your price range and body type and gets you the best jeans you could possibly get anywhere. Everything I know about denim production and care I learned here. If you talk to Julie you’ll learn the best way to keep your jeans in the best shape they can be in for the full life of them. This is an independently owned store and you’re supporting a righteous lady.

So here’s a little story about this place… I was looking for a cool men’s boutique in Oakland and came across this one on Unilocal.Made the trek over there and was a bit surprised when I arrived that there literally wasn’t another person in the store, given that it is the weekend. I was finishing up a call with a friend I hadn’t talked to in years when I entered the store, found a Nudie shirt I liked and went to try it on, and as I’m about to put it on in the dressing room I hear «Can you end your call?». I say hang on to my friend and say «are you talking to me?» and she says «yep». As I walk out I tell my friend what just happened and she was blown away. Solid sales tactic eh?! The f’ing audacity of this woman to ask her customer to end his call, when there isn’t another soul in the store. I then go back in and ask if the woman is the owner, and sure enough she is. No wonder there isn’t anyone in her shit hole shop!
In summary, if you enjoy being treated like a piece of garbage check out this spot! Aside from the owner’s terrible presence and attitude, the place had one decent shirt in the entire shop. Have at it!
Update: Just read the owners response. A. I did say «hello» back. B. It’s up to me, your customer, if I want to have a one-​on-​one «relationship» with you. C. If there was a single another customer in the store I would have politely ended my call. D. I went to three more stores after and told them of my experience and they weren’t surprised.
You don’t seem to get it. I am the customer. I was about to give you my hard earned money. I have a voice. The internet makes it easy to share stories.

This store is the best. Super well curated and stocked and all around bad ass. I always leave MSD with clothes I feel great about and am especially happy to support a locally owned, woman-​owned, independent business.
And to «J.P.» the dude who posted the review about talking on his phone in the store and being asked to finish up his call: the owner wasn’t out of line –YOU were out of line. Calm the fuck down. Don’t go into stores and talk on your phone. Finish that super important call outside. I’ve been buying jeans from Julie for years. Today just picked up my second pair from Maple Street Denim. All I can say is that she, and the jeans she sells rock! I hate trying on clothes. I especially hate trying on jeans. What a quagmire, because I really love wearing jeans! Well, Maple Street Denim is the antidote for people who hate jeans shopping. The owner Julie is a true denim expert, and makes shopping for jeans fun. My husband and I usually end up leaving the store with at least two pairs each.
A couple weeks ago, my little sister told me she wanted new jeans, and I told her to go to straight to Maple Street Denim, and she asked me to come. «I don’t know if I’m ready yet.» I said. I just had a baby about 6 months ago and am pretty much back to my original jeans size, but my body shape changed a bit. Frustratingly, a lot of my old jeans fit weird, and I was dreading the idea of going jeans shopping. But she convinced me to go just to help her choose.
Well, of course I couldn’t sit idly while she shopped, so I ended up trying on some pairs. Marianne, who was working at the time, helped me with some advice as to which brands were more forgiving, and which brands to size up/​down on, etc. It was actually fun! And to my happy surprise, I came home with my very first pair of new postpartum jeans – that are my new favorite pair!
Anyway, I am still pretty excited that I get to wear regular pants again that don’t have a big wide stretchy maternity waist band. And I’m super excited that I didn’t have to sacrifice fashion or quality, or for that matter, my sanity, in procuring them. That being said, Maple Street Denim rules and I highly recommend them for consistently exceptional denim shopping experiences!
[ps: they also have great non-​denim clothes, accessories, and art! so many awesome things in a really nicely configured and curated space!]

Was strolling through the neighborhood and came across this boutique.
Loved the layout of the store — simple, open space plan. Had a ton of jeans which initially caught my interest.
Hubby and I walked in there with no expectation to buy anything. I was drawn to their jewelry. Simple, understated jewelry pieces placed in really cute miniature test tubes. I picked up a gold plated «Oakland» necklace that would make a great present for a girlfriend but decided to keep it for myself. =)
I walked over to the jeans section and didn’t bother to peruse through. I haven’t been in the mood to shop for jeans since nothing currently fits me. I’m short with a growing muffin top and hate spending a ton of money on expensive jeans that makes me feel and look like crap. Julie, the owner asked me what kind of jeans I like — where my trouble zones are. She gave me 2 pairs of jeans to try on — ok, fine, I can make the effort. AND THANK GAWD I DID! The first pair I put on felt like… a pair of socks! It was so comfy, so stretchy, and fit me like a glove but in a very comfortable manner. What are these? JAMES JEAN! Never heard of the brand but the length was perfect on my 5’2″ body! Julie gave me the 411 on the brand and I am instantly inlove with these jeans. I’m hoping she will carry more denim colors so that I can add to my collection. =) For now, this pair is on rotation every day.
My hubby didn’t have any luck in finding a pair but he scored a good looking sweatshirt made of the softest material and the cut/​fit was spot on.
Ended up spending more than we anticipated but it was worth every penny! Great addition to downtown Oakland! Will definitely be back!

If you are looking for top quality denim, this is the best place in town. Julie has long been the denim wizard who keeps my ass clad in the best jeans. The type of jeans that strangers on the street stop me and inquire about. The type of jeans that last for years, and get better as they age. I’m a Nudie girl mostly, but thanks to MSD I also have branched out into Levi’s Made & Crafted and James Jeans. There is more than denim too. The softest scarves and sweatshirts, locally made dresses and shirts, belts, bags, jewelry, and a rather large framed picture of Bruce Springsteen’s fine bum. Julie is honestly the only person I trust when it comes to jeans. After years of passing trends and fads, Julie has continually helped me maintain a personal style that works for my lifestyle and body type (rather than simply seeing something in a fashion editorial and forcing myself into the style). So this is really a love letter to Julie and MSD, and hopefully helpful for you, Unilocal peruser.

A jean bar you say? Yes! They also sell a bit more like leggings, hats, socks type deal, but it’s all about the denim here. Many different high end varieties that range anywhere from $ 100-​$ 200. Julie, the owner and jeantender (wow, I’m going hard on this) will give you the truth if asked on what is up and actually undersold me. I was going for a more expensive jean and she told me to choose the other, less expensive one. Why, thank you!
A few sale items and returns are actually for store credit only, which definitely makes me a more apprehensive consumer. However, Julie stands behind her products and she chooses only the best at this well curated boutique.
Men and women alike, if you are looking to splurge on some jeans, I’d definitely recommend Maple Street Denim.

Maple Street has to be the best place to shop for high quality street wear. I love Julie’s selection of jeans, beanies, scarves, blouses, etc, she has a wide array of brands but is really choosey about which ones she carries– I really love it when you can see someone’s passion shining through. Everything she carries has been hand selected and is extremely high quality, go Julie!

Great place to buy some real high quality denim. I came in wanting to buy a pair of raw jeans, which I hadn’t done before, and ended up with a super pair of Nudies. Got great advice on which fit was better for what I wanted to do (Grim Tim tends to have thicker fabric than Thin Finn, and is less likely to need repairs). Personal service and advice with great product, two thumbs up!

My family and I have been a big fan of Julie forever. She’s one of the nicest /​funniest /​coolest people to buy something from and she’s never lead me astray on a pair of jeans.
