Go here! Marty is a knowledgable, skilled and reliable mechanic. It was literally a pleasure to do work with him. He returned my car in a timely manner, was communicative throughout the process, and was affordable.

The one good thing about my car’s warranty running out is that I can bring into Marty. I’ve gone to him for 20 years and it is so reassuring to have someone to totally trust to the right thing for my car and for me rather than pumpinig up the bill for his benefit. Not only is Marty’s honest, but they do great work.

I had my Subaru Outback fixed here also. After reading the reviews about Subaru repairs and call to asked about a quote. For a specific fix, which was my value were leaking oil into the spark plugs. The quote was about $ 230 definitely cheaper than other shops. I got my car repaired pretty fast. However a couple months later. I had the same problem and this time the engine light came on. So I decided to fix it myself with the help of youtube and it only costed me about $ 30 for the parts with 1hour of Love. If only they put some effort and time into do the right repair. They would have done right the first time.

What a jerk! Don’t go here if you want a trustworthy mechanic who will not take advantage of your limited knowledge of cars. As young black women, my partner and I are very weary of mechanics. This proved to be a horrible experience.
I came in having already read my check engine light trouble codes. I knew the codes were for my camshaft position sensor and scheduled an appointment to replace that sensor.
He told me to drop it off (I came in at 10AM) and he would give me a call back after taking a look at it. Come 4 o’clock, near closing time, I called him and he answered saying he was just about to call me… He told me my computer wasn’t reading the p0340 and p1391 codes but instead an oxygen sensor code. He quoted me $ 180 on the phone to replace the oxygen sensor (I ended up paying $ 204). I agreed to the work. When I got back to the shop, just before closing, he showed me the part he replaced. After researching and learning what the part is, I realized he flat out lied and told me it was an oxygen sensor when in actuality what he replaced was the brake combination valve! What the heck Marty?!
I drove away and the next day my check engine light came back on reading the same codes I came to him with, and my vehicle cut out while idling. This is the same problem I had before I brought it to him. He actually called me to see how the work went, which at the time I thought was courteous. I told him what happened and over the phone he told me he was so busy I had to wait days to come back. When I came back he was avoidant and not helpful at all. He told me I would have to come back the next week for more repairs! When my partner questioned him as to why he didn’t replace the parts we asked him to replace initially, he got visibly angry, took an aggressive stance and was so incredibly rude to my partner! At that time I asked to get into my vehicle (he was blocking the driver’s door/​seat) and drove away. I have never experienced that level of defensiveness, disrespect and obvious disregard for my safety, time, money and the performance of my vehicle. I will never go back to Marty again. I will always check the reviews that are «not recommended» on Unilocal in the future. It would have saved me a lot of trouble! Five months later and the same engine trouble codes keep coming back and my vehicle cranks but won’t start anymore. What a disaster.

Yep, just tacking yet another five star review for Marty (and Edwin!). I can’t believe how lucky I am that this shop is so close to my office. Stand up guys who do great work for a fair price… the feel of a small town shop in a big city. I’ve had them work on a couple Subarus for me, couldn’t be happier with the service, advice, and price. Yes it is true that it can be hard to get them on the phone at times (because they’re working on your car!), but being persistent is worth it. I wouldn’t go anywhere else.

I am no longer in Oakland but I still went out if my way to bring my car back here. Most compassionate and trustworthy mechanic I have ever taken my car too. My cooling system was damaged on my beetle and both Edwin and Marty did everything possible to get my car running normal.

Friendly personable staff welcoming and warm, happy to help even over the phone.

Let me add another 5 Star review for this place.
I’m relatively inexperienced when it comes to cars and I was a little afraid of bringing my car somewhere for a routine service as you always hear about mechanics wanting you to sell more unnecessary repairs. This place is the opposite! He does what is necessary and he sent me home to check the receipts from the previous owner to figure out when the timing belt was last changed, so he wouldn’t do the unnecessary (and expensive) change.
All in all, I brought in my car (ten year old Jetta) in the morning and could already pick it up in the evening after all the filters and the oil had been changed.
It’s a small shop, when I was there only two people were working there, so if you don’t get anybody on the phone, just try again later, you won’t regret going there.

UPDATE! Marty is the best and only mechanic I would go to in Oakland. I recently moved to New York with my old Jeep wrangler. Marty made sure she was in tip top shape for me to drive across country. He goes above and beyond for his customers! I don’t know what my jeep will do with out Marty. I will always be a customer when I’m in the bay area…

Marty’s Metrix is my first and only choice for auto repair. I’ve been a customer for 12 years and treated me with honesty, fairness, and friendship.
They can get pretty busy, but once you get an appt they will take great care of you and your vehicle.

The power steering on Lexus failed and was really difficult to drive around. Marty was recommended to me and since he was close I thought I’d try him out. I wasn’t able to get anyone on the phone when I called (multiple times), so I dropped by to talk to them to see if they could figure out the problem. Although they were completely booked for the week, Marty said he’d hold onto the car for me and look it over in his spare time. My schedule was a little crazy and I was heading out of state later in the week, but Marty still held onto it for me during that time until I got back.
While the communication wasn’t great during the initial diagnosis (lots of busy signals and missed call backs), I chalk it up to Marty’s busy schedule and him not having a definite answer for me yet. Marty was able to get an idea of what the problem was, but some special equipment was needed to test further since it was a Hybrid model. Marty then went out of his way to get the car to one of his friends in Berkeley who had the equipment needed to test it, and was then great about getting info back to me on what was going on. Once the issue was figured out, Marty apologized for not having the best communication at the beginning, and let me know he would not be charging me for any of his time spent on diagnosing and taking my car to the other shop. His friend was able to overnight the part needed and I still got a great deal compared to what I would have paid at the dealer.
Bottom line with Marty’s is that they are a great, trustworthy local business, and Marty is really friendly and knowledgeable. Being as small as they are, getting someone on the phone right away can be a challenge, but they more than make up for it with their service. Although Marty didn’t end up fixing my car or charging me a dime for over a weeks worth of his time, I will make sure he gets my business for any other services I need. Thanks Marty!

This place is great! My friend and I were on a road trip from LA to SF and the starter on my car died just as we pulled up to Marty’s shop. He took a quick look at the engine, had the part shipped in that day, assessed the cost (very competitive and honest), and fixed my car up.
We were visiting the city, but staying in Oakland on this particular day — he went out of the way to gave us a ride to the local BART station, and picked us up from there when it was ready. Marty is the man! He runs an honest, reliable family business. His service is the type of service everyone should be providing this day in age — going the extra mile and providing an honest service at a competitive price. Thanks Marty!

Wow! Just got off the phone with the owner, Marty, and I had to write a review (one of my very first Unilocal reviews here!). He shared his vast knowledge about the transmission issues my particular make and model have had in the past and how that might relate to my current car repiar problem. He made some suggestions and gave me advice re not throwing good money after bad and suggested I make sure my tranny wasn’t in need of more than just the cost of a flush before I pay for that service. Thanks Marty! I will def come here in the future for repairs! Now I see why all the happy Unilocalers :)

The place is the most honest auto repair shop in Bay Area. Might be a small shop but it’s alway busy and your car is fixed with non issues.

One of my small joys in life is being able to trust our mechanic, Marty, 100%.
Our family has been going to Marty for quite a few years now and it is reassuring to know that if/​when something happens with our family’s car, Marty will be there with a fair evaluation.

I’m a small business owner in Oakland myself and it really pains me to write this review. That being said, here goes:
I found Marty’s Metrix on Unilocal and called because I wanted to bring my 2010 Subaru Outback to a local small business (instead of the big overpriced dealership). I made six phone calls to Marty’s total.
The first two phone calls went unanswered. These calls were placed during their normal business hours. I know that things can sometimes be busy, so I called again later that same morning. The phone was answered by a woman who was very pleasant. I told her what I needed (50,000 mile service) and she said she’d have someone call me back with a quote. I gave her my information but didn’t hear back for a few hours. Later that same day I called again to ask about the quote and the same lady apologized for not getting back to me. She said that nobody was available to talk to me at that moment and that she’d make sure someone called me back. No call back that day.
I called again the next morning (again during normal business hours) and no answer. I waited an hour and called again and talked to a gentleman who again took my information and told me they’d call me back. They never called me back.
Maybe this place has so much business they can afford to simply ignore new customers, or maybe they just need to hire some more help. Either way, I won’t be bringing my car here.

Straightforward, honest, and cheap.
I’ve taken my car here several times and always ended up paying LESS than I budgeted for. Unlike most of my 3 page long reviews I have nothing to complain about, so this one will be brief.

Marty’s Metrics came highly recommended to me by a motorcycle mechanic in the area that I’ve known for years, and respect. I brought the my Impreza in for a 30k tune-​up, and was quoted less than half of what the dealer quoted. Also, the shop staff was very friendly and courteous.
After inspecting the car, Marty found that I had platinum plugs that have a service interval of 60k miles, were in good condition, and didn’t need replacement. This brought the price down another couple of hundred bucks.
The car runs like better than ever, getting better mileage than ever, and I would recommend Marty to anyone who needs an excellent, honest, mechanic.
