i do not like this place.
I thought these reviews were real!
ive been here more than quite a few times.
here is what i dont like
they think they are hot, they are not hot.
They really need to take a few steps back and see what they look like. in theire minds they think they are a hollywood entertainment industry selected hip hop dance instruction what they are; another dance school/​fitness studio
They need to carry themselves like a dance school or fitness studio instead of a night club it is very unprofessional and very uncomfortable.
they prefer online payment which is a red flag.
They seldomly have their secretary working like they have a secretary but shes never working.
They prefer prepaid classes lol like seriously can we get through class number one please?
My issue is they keep changing their minds at first they collected the money after class which is actually how you are supposed to do business, like not just dance business all business.
then slowly after a few weeks they started collecting money before the class even starts.
they have you sign in on a sheet but they want you to pay online, so are they an online business or a real business? lol yeah they take them selves way too seriously in the wrong areas.
oh yeah and here is what i dis like the most about this whole thing certain classes they do as if it is a night club and you «pay to get in’ haha ridiculous!
now for the dance i like the teachers i had but he never really broke it down, in a way he makes up for it but us doing the same thing throughout the class, ive seen other teachers that move on a slower level for beginners which i wanted to take his class in did completely by coincidence at another studio
the music was repetitive and honestly just music i did not like i mean i really dont like rihanna at that seemed to be a thing.
the studio is small with two bathrooms right behind the mirrored wall.
now once again think about it, for a group of people that prefer prepaid cards costing over 100 dollars… ok i dont think so.
i really think this place would be ok if they were not so un reasonable with their prices.
i mean when you pay for something its more than just one thing you should expect to know whats going on when you get there they do not have good parking and they are very small.
to each his own i guess but id say try it out a few times before be cohered into buying a «card» oh and btw the card does not work for all of the classes they offer either so um once again is it worth it? nah

Took Deedra’s jazz class here and had such a great time! Great class if you want to practice your technique and move to great music.
It’s gentle enough in case you’ve had major injuries like I have. Bottom line, I got to move my body and enjoy myself without worrying about dance class pressure or snobbery.
Deedra and the people in class are
really nice and down to earth. Deedra’s choreography always has a good flow and the music is awesome.
I also got to watch Corey’s class beforehand and it looks so fun! His other dancers were there too and enjoying themselves.

New class is great! Added adult jazz with deedra wong and it’s a perfect little weeknight 90 min… classic warm up, clean lyrical choreography with lots of lengthening to counteract too much computer time. And it makes you sweat– from style effort not speed runs. Nice! Horton Giordano Broadway style jazz. Tuesdays at 7 so far but watch for other nights!

Ok people dancing here is so special! The space has a beautiful energy, the teachers are fun energetic! Really positive! Go to get the best cardio in the Bay Area! Kids classes on Saturdays at 10:15 for my little one best class ever!

The toddler class is so great, my daughter loves it, and I love getting to dance with her. Ms Teala is a fantastic teacher, really engaging, fun, and friendly. Also so nice that it’s drop in — really convenient and easy to stop by on Saturdays when we’re in town. And such a good deal for $ 12!

FUN! A friend got us to try a saturday morning class with Teela after months of coaxing. As a professional hula dancer I can be really hesitant to try new styles (aka anything I might suck at) but Teela’s class was fast paced, challenging, and most of all a BLAST. My hula sister and I left on a cloud and were so hooked we bought a series.
The only other class we’ve done so far is Momo’s monday night cardio hip hop which was equally as fun, but did move at a slightly slower pace which is not bad at all. We still sweat our arses off.
Monday nights are much more manageable for us as my body is no longer willing to function after one of these classes, so saturday mornings leave saturdays utterly useless for my out of shape self.
I love that the classes have different choreo for each class which makes it east to drop in when you want/​can, vs feeling like your missing a piece of a routine if you miss a class.
Be ready to SWEAT like crazy in the best way possible with a group of encouraging, enthusiastic folks and great instructors.

On Super Bowl Sunday, decided to try something different from my normal activities (yoga, pilates). I recalled my one «beginner» (adv dancers showed up) hip hop class years ago at Alice Arts Center and thought NSM would be less intense — meaning at Alice Arts– the teacher (though good) made us demo the routine one by one.
The first thing I noticed at NSM was a container of ear plugs (awesome!) at the check in window. [Very thoughtful as I have friends my age who have 50% hearing loss due to clubbing, music festivals and annual BM.] The owner, Teela, was friendly and i purchased a 5 class pass with a 3 month expiration date.
I took Demone’s 2p beginning hip hop then his 3p cardio hip hop. I can honestly say that IF his ENTIRE class would be like the 15 min easy to follow «warm up», I would take his class again & again. The only difference I could discern between the 2p & 3p classes was faster pacing and more people and in 3p class he had ppl move to different rows occasionally. He told us he was making up choreo on the spot and it showed as he occasionally forgot some steps. I spoke to a regular student afterwards and found out that Demone’s routine changes every single class but other teachers like Corey & Teela will keep same routine for a month.
Demone — the first thing he did when we all assembled was to introduce himself and shake my hand. Additional things I liked: 1. Amiable, easy going. 2. Able to connect quickly with the group; 3. infectious, positive energy, highly enthusiastic; 4. warm up is easy to follow; 5. music volume not overly loud.
My wish list is as follows: 1. break down moves body part by body part. It was up to me to analyze his moves & figure out things like — keep left leg straight while weight in right foot, etc. (This was more thinking that I wanted to do.)
2. Keep students’ heart rate up and 100% attention focused on students. In both classes, there were many breaks where Demone told us to drink water, or he was fiddling with music, or chatting with Teela. I took the 2^nd class thinking that I would sweat but I did not.
3. For beginner class, try simpler choreo or better yet, teach a continuous 60 min class with no official breaks and make moves easy to follow-​like in warm up.
4. Emphasize abs and core strength in commands throughout class and warm up/​cool down– my lower back spasmed in both classes. In talking to a dancer afterwards, I should have kept my abs in throughout– especially in the side to side jerky motions.
5. Balance choreo so that both sides of body get equal attention. I realize hip hop isnt yoga, but I felt more worked on my right side than my left.

I’m a Momo disciple and followed him recently to New Style Motherlode after taking his nighttime hip-​hop cardio classes over the past year at the UC Berkeley Recreational Student Facility.
Wish I knew about this place a long time ago! It’s a beautiful and airy dance space in a really convenient location, the students are super-​friendly, and Momo — obviously — is the messiah of hip-​hop instruction. Not even kidding. I’m addicted. It’s kind of a problem.
New Style Motherlode enables my addiction, too, by linking to a make-​your-​life-​so-​much-​easier app that lets you purchase different class series, gives you the upcoming schedule for the week and lets you sign up for a class right up until it’s about to start.
In conclusion: NSM is just another reason to hella heart Oakland.

My friend and I took MoMo’s hip hop class last night and it was so FUN! He had so much energy and joy that it was contagious. We have each other high fives as we switched places. The choreography had me sweating and smiling all along the way. We both decided to come back next week! Mondays 6 – 7 pm. So glad New Style Motherlode holds it down in Oakland! Hey!

great dance studio with amazing instructors… Corey Action not only teaches, but has a few albums and videos out as well as performs live… now thats someone to learn from!

2^nd time taking Cardio Hip Hop w/​Jennifer. This is an addictive workout that leaves you sweating buckets, and oh so accomplished! It’s a great way to start the day when you leave feelin a little bit more talented :)!
Focusing on the choreographed, sexy moves sure is a fun way to focus on your body and self and forces you to stop thinkin about all other serious things in life for an hour! (Because if my mind starts drifting… I forget all the moves and look real silly!). Love it!
Also​.it miraciously cured my hangover :)

New Style Motherlode is one of my favorite places in the world – honestly. I started going to the cardio hip hop classes at NSM at its College Ave. location and have continued at their new location at 4225 Broadway, with it’s beautiful bamboo wood floor, big bright windows and incredible dance teachers. I try to go at least 3X a week to cardio classes – the rest of my day is always better when I’ve attended an NSM cardio class in the morning. (The kids and teen classes are really popular, too. I’ve had my 7 year old take classes at NSM, also.)
The choreography is fantastic – simple enough to follow (they break it down) and hard enough for it never to feel like the same old eight counts. I feel like a hip hop dancer when I am in the class (even though I am in my 40s). There are people of all ages dancing in this studio. On occasion some of the «real hip hop dancers» who’ve been dancing with Corey forever join in and amp up the energy in the studio – and we all get twice the workout (which means napping later). It’s great. I love Corey Action’s choreography, Momo LeBeau’s energy, and Jennifer Field’s style and spunk. Teela, the co-​owner of the studio is also great – I got to know her this year as she provided leadership/​coaching for Platinum, the women’s 30 year old+ performance dance group that I participated in.
The studio has recently been adding new instructors, classes and dance styles, such as house, contemporary, salsa and Zumba, to their mix. I know Jazz and some other fitness style classes are coming soon, too. I love seeing them grow and am so glad to have this one of a kind place to go and dance my heart out. If you’re looking for a studio – I highly recommend New Style Motherlode.

This studio is awesome! But, it moved to a different location, which is much larger. I cannot remember the address, but its near Oakland Tech.

Hands down the greatest studio ever. I mostly take the cardio hip hop class which always gives me a fun yet challenging workout but I also love the sexy ladies class with jennifer. Jennifer and Corey are wonderful teachers that will amaze you with their talent and charm. This studio is definitely the only one of its kind and I wish I could go more but have not been going since I moved.

I’ve known Corey and Teela since way back when they taught at the then Alice Arts Center and they’ve really created an amazing dance studio and following! Pretty much every single class is taught by a kick ass instructor that really has the chops to teach. There is nothing worse then going to a dance class feeling like you know more then the teacher. On the flip side, most classes unless otherwise noted are mixed level and very welcoming to beginners.
The reviews of Sarita’s jazz are spot on — she is the only decent adult commercial jazz in SF and the East Bay.
The space is small, so a word to the wise: watch your spacing. And if you don’t, just stay out of my way.

Fierce!
I am a regular to the Thursday Jazz classes with the new instructor Sarita. In a word she is FANTABULOUS. Now for you technical dancers, Sarita knows her shit. She can work you like mia michaels, but will have you cracking up at the same time. This class is the full package and I have yet to find a drop-​in adult jazz class with this amount of flavor.

Decided to drop in their Jazz I/​II class this past thursday.
Robin, our instructor, will work you. This class is an hour and a half long with the first hour feeling like it’s a boot camp. Don’t get me wrong, homegurl will make you feel great. I was SO sore the next day but it was a good pain. This class is obsessed with ab work outs and toning your arms and thighs.
If you’re going in with NO experience with jazz, then the last 30 minutes will mean nothing to you. You have to have some jazz and ballet techniques down before jumping into their routine.
Attitude: Not much attitude at all. A lot of the regulars were nice and encouraging for my friend and I who made a fool of ourselves rolling and stumbling across the dance floor.
Class size: perfect. About 8 – 10 people. Enough for Robin to give you attention if you need it, which was a lot for my friend and me.
I’d just go for homegurls work out.

Cardio hip hop is pure, undeniable fun; whether you’ve never taken a dance class before or confess to hours of imitating music videos back in the day, you’ll love the classes at New Style Motherlode. You will SWEAT. You will ENJOY yourself. You will both dread and thrill as Corey or Jennifer speeds up the music to get your heart rate up (except for JJ Fad’s «Supersonic»…that’s already fast…).
Bring water, a towel, and an extra shirt. Don’t be afraid – the teachers are great and put you at ease. DO be prepared to shake what your mama gave ya.
Also of note: you have to have love for a dance studio that offers «funky ballet.» How fabulous is that? Haven’t tried it YET, but I’m totally planning on it!

I was tipped off to this place by my yoga teacher, who kept asking us at the end of our anusara session, «Who wants to join me for some hip-​hop dance?» My heart wanted to say yes, but back-​to-​back with yoga? Who’s got the energy?
Well now I’m on a different yoga schedule, and I was looking for something to shake up my running/​yoga routine. Enter New Style Motherlode! I love this joint! The cardio hip-​hop classes are perfect: challenging enough that you’re actually working on putting the combination together and getting the moves just right, but not some hoity-​toity dance class that takes itself really seriously. It doesn’t matter if you are an expert dancer or just someone who wants to have fun– all are welcome. People with little or no sense of rhythm will definitely be challenged– keeping up with Corey’s, Jennifer’s or Demone’s moves is no small feat. But you will sweat like a dog and you will love every minute.

New Style Motherlode kids performed at the SF 9^th Annual Hip Hop Dancefest last Saturday, and they BLEW ME AWAY. The choreography redefined the word «original.»
There were even little 5 year olds who could crump like nobody’s business. I couldn’t stop screaming, «OMGOMG! They are SOOO cute! They are sooo good!» [As you can tell, I am extremely eloquent in the throes of adoration.]
Best of all, the dancers had huge smiles on their faces and you could tell that they genuinely loved it. I read on the New Style Motherlode site that all kids who participate in their classes have to maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA. Awesome.
I would totally take hip hop classes at New Style Motherlode if I lived in the East Bay! For now, I can only give them props for one of the most badass hip hop performances I’ve ever seen…
(PS I asked about prices and you can pay $ 100 a month and drop in on as many as you like (5 classes per day, every day of the month), or pay $ 15 per class if you’re an adult — not sure what the kids rate is)
