Just came back from the first Oaklandish Film Festival at the Parkway and overall it was — AIIGHT. It could’ve been much better, but they only showed an hours worth of footage which I don’t think is enough time to show Oakland throughout history.
It was basically a mish-​mash of archival /​news footage and snippets of some documentaries /​movies set or about Oakland. Some things I thought they showed too much of (this god awful clip from a movie I have no idea the name of, but it was possibly a blaxpoitation film about an Egyptian a la Parliment Funkadelic coming here to help the black community) and some things were too short (The Black Panthers clip).
There was laughter from the crowd (which was less diverse than I’d hoped) when there were scenes of 1920’s Oakland and how tame people seemed and whispers from people when scenes of old downtown came into view. Ah, nostalgia…
I’d definately go again though. Hopefully they’ll put together more clips and have their sound together (for the first 20 minutes it was fine, but for the rest of the hour the sound wasn’t in sync with peoples mouths).
