I love this place! Its right down the street from my job… variety of fresh hot food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner! Friendly staff, great neighborhood place!

I’m a regular here and love the hot food selection.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner some days.
My family has been shopping here since the 1940’s if you can believe that.
Excellent quality food, meat, veggies, beer, liquor, and off street parking.

I love that this place is only a few blocks from my apartment. I come here a couple times a week for quick, fresh, ready made dinners (looove their mashed potatoes) and other random groceries. I don’t do my full shopping here as the selection isn’t huge and it is naturally a bit more expensive but most of the week for quick shopping (their local ice cream selection is awesome) I’m totally okay paying for the convenience and really good quality food. The employees are always friendly and I’m always surprised how fast I get checked out even though the store always seems pretty busy.

I used to live off Piedmont Ave and this would be my go to for groceries. I always thought it was a nice place to shop.
Prices are a little high but I could walk there (save money on gas!) so it didn’t bother me.

I’m all for supporting local stores, and had shopped here many times but I will not be shopping here again.
My family and I had a very negative interaction with an employee in the parking lot. I had injured my ankle and my partner was letting me out of the car so I didn’t have to walk as far. I was quickly unstrapping our baby daughter from her car seat and someone honked at us. That was fine, although seriously, chill. What wasn’t fine was the employee who actually took a long time to try to aggressively insert himself into the situation by saying that we were holding up traffic (3 cars) and had to move. Had he not said anything, the situation would have been over far quicker than it was.
The prices being a bit high? Ok, I can deal with that. An employee almost yelling at me while I’m unstrapping my daughter from her car seat? Unacceptable.

What can I say everything about this place is awesome as a lazy guy who hates to cook they’ve the best hot food area ever ok sometimes it could be rehashed it gets a lil beat up BUT it’s %98 on point service is great polite quick even with the small area feel.

Great place with a great selection of fresh meat and fish and other foods I may can’t find other places, however… the pieces are high and they have been saying FOREVER that they are «working» on accepting ebt clients. There is no reason why a grocery store in Oakland should be restrictive to whom their client base is. It’s time for them to grant access to all who want to shop there, especially in light of what happened at the Oakland whole foods less than three miles away.

A bit expensive but great beer & chocolate selection. Tons of local stuff! Like whole foods + trader joe’s had a tiny baby.

The section is great and it’s sort of the only option if you live near Piedmont Ave. and need to grab something.
The quality of food is high and there is a great deli option. The meat is high quality and the butchers are the friendliest!
The downside is they definitely capitalize on being the only larger grocery store on the Ave. Almost everything here is way more expensive than it should be, and it’s a bummer. Basic canned foods are upwards of $ 3 here and milk prices are high (the Uncle Sam eggs however, are crazy well priced at $ 3/​dozen and one of the things I specifically stop here for)
I know it’s hard for local grocery stores to compete, so I don’t expect the cheapest prices but the little produce store a block down carries produce, dairy, and some canned food and basics for a better price.

I love co-​ops, so I had to check it out. It’s a cute store, they have everything! Didn’t do too much grocery shopping, just stopped to grab a bite at their hot food /​deli section. Most of the food tasted overcooked and dry. Some items just didn’t look like it was in the right temp. They had so much to choose from, it makes me wonder how much of it actually sells or if it’s leftovers from yesterday. I had to throw out the food since it wasn’t edible. Luckily I bought acme bread and butter and that’s what we snacked on. I suggest they do less items and may have the staff monitor it rather than all hanging out at the check stands.

The original jerk who used to work here no longer works here, so in that respect, the service has vastly improved. The produce here is still outrageously expensive for organic, so thus the three stars.

I went to the local supermarket to buy ground veal and a butcher there told me about this store. He referred to the Piedmont butchers as «artists». Indeed, they did have a great sense of humor, and the service was phenomenal. Now, I did go during their off peak hours so I didn’t have to wait long at all.
I bought ground beef, veal, pork and I gotta say, I’ve never made meatballs that tasted this good before. So I went back 2 days later and purchased a bone-​in rib-​eye. Steak was juicy and succulent, I think I will make my 3^rd trip over for my NY strip.
If you’re looking for quality over quantity and don’t mind paying a little more for great flavor, this market is your best bet!
Market has its own parking around the back, which was very convenient!

This five star review is for Chris in the Wine/​Spirits department. I recently called Piedmont Grocery looking for a hard to find bottle of whiskey that is usually released on a very limited supply that I wanted to surprise my husband with.
Chris informed me that they did not have any in stock but he took my name and contact information in case Piedmont Grocery received any in the future. ONE DAY LATER, Chris leaves me a message letting me know that he spoke to a colleague Dennis about the whiskey I was looking to find and Dennis said they had one bottle in the back that someone ordered but never picked up — Chris informed me that he would hold it at the front for me to pick up that weekend!
I had literally called 16 other stores in the bay area looking for this bottle and all were sold out so this was very happy news for me. Chris’s above-​and-​beyond customer service is rare these days. What a gem he is!

I wish Piedmont Grocery had another avenue for feedback. But since it doesn’t, I’ll go to Unilocal.
I like Piedmont Grocery. I live in the neighborhood. I typically go to Piedmont for a few things, one of the top points being its meat counter.
I went in tonight at 7pm. Typically the meat counter will happily grind meat to my needs. Tonight, I needed 3 lbs of chili meat, which is typically not a problem. Upon asking at the counter, I’m told the grinder has been disinfected for the night and I’m out of luck. Which would have been okay. Except they proceeded to tell me that chili meat hasn’t been at the counter for 3 years (even though I regularly get it here) and that even though the store closes at 8, they’re open all night working hard back there. So you’re just out of luck, customer.
I drove to Whole Foods. They don’t have chili meat either. They also don’t have the bit they need for that cut in their grinder. But they were happy to offer to cut it by hand for me. Wow!
Sorry, Piedmont. Your draw used to be neighborhood friendliness. Now not so much.

My new found love, what a great establishment. This place is full of Awesome. Jason in the meat department was very kind and knowledgeable, what a great positive energy, he knows his stuff and most important he provides excellent customer service. Did I happen to mention we talked Raiders football… Just win baby! Rrrraaaidddeersss!

This is one of a few grocery stores my girlfriend and I shop at quite regularly and it hurts to have to write this review.
Not to long ago my girlfriend came home from shopping at Piedmont and began telling how disgusted she felt by a couple of the employees. Naturally I was upset and wanted to say something to someone at the store but being that this is a locally run store not a chain as well as union it would make it hard for my complaint to go anywhere. The worker stared her up and down and didn’t even care that he she saw him. She felt violated and disgusted that he had the audacity to disrespect her.
I chose to keep my mouth shut and just kept eyes open and ears to the ground. My girlfriend had described the gentleman who made her feel uncomfortable so I knew who he was. To no surprise after a young lady walked into the store and past him and a co worker they just stared at her as she walked passed. It wasn’t subtle nor were they trying to be. They began nodding and telling one another to look at the girl while they cracked jokes and stared at her. It made me upset because I can imagine how my girlfriend felt when she was there. This girl did not see them but I don’t doubt that this happened more than once because I saw this happening on a couple occasions.
I highly recommend Piedmont address this problem. It’s not a good look for them.
P.S I don’t think the younger female workers there like this guy either, I recently saw a young lady that worked at the register come around to the prepared foods section to give him a piece of her mind.

I just found another cashier whose customer service is as rare as a 2 dollar bill. Very rare.

I discovered and began shopping at Piedmont Grocers about a year ago and wrote a glowing review, which I accidentally deleted when meaning to update it. My first review was a 5 star.
I don’t know what is going on here, but there is something wrong with one of my favorite grocery stores.
Around Christmas, I started noticing there was a problem with different items. Fruits and veggies molding by the next day, items on shelves that were expired; olives from the olive bar that tasted sour.
Then, at the beginning of this month, I purchased a gourmet chocolate bar (Jade brand) for my husband that cost approximately $ 6.00. for 2 ounces. When he went to open it, he noticed the expiration date was January, 2015.
On that same visit, I was looking to buy some cheese. One of the packages of expensive cheese had mold on it. I gave it to one of the workers, but I don’t know what she did with it.
Today, I went back out there to specifically buy fish. I told the gentleman behind the counter that I wanted 5 pieces of sole. He repeated back to me, «5 pieces.» I then watched him pick out FIVE pieces of fish (I always count just to make sure I don’t get home and find I’ve been shorted). I had my elderly mother with me and when I saw him count the fish, I turned to talk to her and quit paying attention. He eventually handed me my package of fish for $ 33.00. I thought that seemed a little high priced for the amount, but cost isn’t a big deal to me, so the thought quickly left my mind.
Then I went to purchase cheese. I picked up my favorite Fromager D’Affinois ($ 16.99 a pound) and what did I see??? MOLD!!! Mold on the rind and mold on the cheese.
Later that afternoon, I started to prepare dinner, I opened my package of fish and what did I find? SIX pieces of fish… not FIVE like I asked for and watched the clerk pick out. While $ 5 extra out of my purse isn’t a big deal, wasting food is and I didn’t need six pieces of fish. And I couldn’t help but wonder how and why that extra piece of fish ended up in my package.
I’m a huge foody and not ashamed to admit that shopping at higher-​priced, independently owned grocery stores is my favorite past-​time. However, when I’m paying a premium price for expired/​moldy food and/​or (possibly) being over-​sold at the fish/​meat counter, I’m going to start taking my business elsewhere. There are just way too many upscale grocers in the bay area to whom I can give my business and not have to worry about what I’m placing in my cart.

My partner and I recently switched gyms and will now be frequenting the Piedmont neighborhood more often. After a workout, we decided to pick up some things for dinner and he reminded me that this place exists, so we stumbled on in.
Piedmont Grocery reminds me a lot of Follow Your Heart back in Sherman Oaks (for any SoCal people out there). It’s a nice mix of health-​centric options that you’d find at Whole Foods, but they also carry tons of common brands that you’d only find at larger supermarkets like Safeway. I also found a ton of specialty ingredients like dashi, sambal oelek and El Pato sauce (not that those go together in any way) that I’ve been hard-​pressed to find at any other market I’ve been to.
I also took a peek at their to-​go lunch options and was really impressed with both the price and variety. I’m giving them 5 stars for selection alone. Their chocolate/​candy aisle is incredible and will make a great stop for any last-​minute gifts.
Yes, some things here are on the pricier side, but sometimes I’m willing to pay more for convenience just so I don’t have to make stops at 2 or 3 different stores.

Piedmont Grocery is AOK is my book, if only for two things:
1. They carry my favorite cereal (Kashi Vanilla Graham Clusters for those in the know)
2. They have a bunch of local coffee beans from Philz, Mother Lode, and more.
They also make a mean box lunch with chicken, fruit, potato salad, and a cookie.
They’re a little pricy, but that comes with the territory (said lunch cost around $ 10). Still, it’s good stuff.
