See Jane Run

I went in knowing I would get expert help with shoes for my problem feet, and I was very quickly directed to another store down the street-​it was clear that this store would not have the right shoes for me, and the salesperson didn’t hesitate to make sure I went somewhere that would have the right shoes. I’m so grateful that they didn’t insist on trying to sell me something that wouldn’t work. Kudos!

Very rude and absolutely terrible customer service. I walked in and instead of greeting me with a smile and hello, what I assumed to be the owner, looked at me with a blank and irritated stare and continued to carry on a conversation with her employee. She continued to ignore me then after about five minutes gives me the most rude hello, that I had to ask if she was talking to me, because I would think that a business owner would talk to customers in a polite tone. I would never return to this place!

I haven’t been to their store in person, but I recently ordered a TriggerPoint grid foam roller online. Not only was it a great price, but it came in less than 2 days! I’m glad to support this local sports store.

Whenever I need new running shoes and other gear/​clothes, I go to See Jane Run. I’ve run their half marathon four times, and did their sprint triathlon once. It’s a great store, run by great people.
The experience of getting new shoes is particularly important to highlight. I realized recently that I’d put almost 500 miles on my previous pair of running shoes (and was wondering why I was starting to experience pain where I hadn’t before…), so I stopped by See Jane Run once again.
The woman who helped me was patient, brought me multiple pairs of shoes to try on and compare, helped me assess what I needed without being overbearing, and I ultimately walked out with yet another great pair.
AND: They carry the good sports bras. A+.

Today, I went in to buy a kanteen instead of ordering it online, however. I wished I had never come in. The moment I stepped in the store I was berated with stares, no welcome in or how can I help you, just glares. When I finally asked someone for help, not only was my question unanswered, but the way the clerk, Elise, approached me was highly unenthustiastic. The whole time she watched me as if I was a shop lifter and she only paid attention to me and my actions. I doubt I will come back here. Hopefully she does not treat every customer like this.

I have had several terrible experiences with See Jane Run. Months ago, I signed up for a 5K race. Though there was no one else in the store, the process took over 40 mins. At the end, the sales associate told me that she had run out of paper to print a receipt. She ended up swiping my card twice and writing out a receipt on a scrap of paper. I was promised that I would not be charged twice.
Of course, I was charged twice. When I called to complain, the sales people kept putting me on hold and telling me that they had to transfer my call to another person who would put me on hold. Why should I have to go out of my way to correct a mess I didn’t create?
They eventually reversed the charges but it didn’t end there. Months went by and I never got a confirmation that I had signed up for the race. A couple of days before, I find out there was an issue with the registration. My friend informed me that she called the company and they told her I did not have a bib. As it turns out, they didn’t spell my name correctly and probably thought I was someone else.
I would never do business with See Jane Run again.

Store was empty at 6pm tonight, and there were two associates who greeted me nicely from their seats at the computer. I asked for assistance with shoes, since I’m training for a half marathon and my shoes are definitely worn out. The associate asked me for my shoe size, and I showed her my current shoes. She noted that they are a 9.5 and that they don’t have that size in that make. I said that’s okay, that I just wanted to get the shoe that would be best for my knee injury. She brought out a shoe they had just gotten in stock, and when it didn’t fit that well she said, «hmm, that’s weird.» She gave me a smaller size that didn’t fit well either. When I mentioned it, she said, «Well, the only thing I can suggest is the shoe store up the street. It’s about a block down.»
They had a whole wall of shoes, she showed me one pair, and sent me out? I’m not coming back here.

I’ve been in this location a few times before with friends shopping and saw how awesome the sales people were and decided to take a trip in myself recently and support a small business. Wow, what a mistake.
First of all, it took someone a good five minutes to acknowledge my existence. (Yes, I checked my watch). It was not busy at all and the gentleman at the register seemed a lot more engrossed in the computer screen than with an actual person in the store.
Secondly, when I was approached, I was followed very closely and almost hounded by this guy as though I was about to steal or something. It was really uncomfortable. I like being helped but this was way over the top. Clearly they needed to make a sale or something.
Next I went to scope out some shoes. As an avid runner for 5 years, I know my shoes and what I like. And I’m always open for suggestions (you know, like when Nordstrom brings out a couple pairs when you find shoes), but what I was brought was not even comparable to what I run in, not even close to what works for my feet. I asked a few questions and received some lukewarm answers that made me think this guy had no idea what he was talking about, he just kept pushing expensive shoes at me and I will buy an expensive shoe IF IT WORKS FOR MY FEET. Again, these did not and I expressed that. Clearly he did not listen, just trying to sell me something… Annoying. And, I realize this will sound petty, but it really bothered me that this guy smelled like a cigarette. I mean, come on. You work at a running store. But, let’s be honest, this guy was clearly not a runner just based on his level of knowledge.
Overall, the store was messy, it had a negative vibe and was a completely different place than it was a few months ago. I’m glad my friends enjoyed this place because it’s back to Sports Basement for me.

I walked in and the store was empty. There were two sales associates between the counter, but no one greeted me. I started perusing the Patagonia jackets, thinking it might be the time to finally cave-​in and buy me a $ 225 Rockridge uniform. I tried a few on, but still no one greeted me or asked me if I needed anything. Quite frankly, I look way too old to be shoplifting, so I couldn’t understand why I was getting the diss. It turned me off and so I left. Did I look homeless maybe? Rockridge has really perfected ignoring the homeless.
As a point of comparison, I spent $ 300 at Transports (the other running store in Rockridge) where I was greeted, assisted, educated, etc. Not that it matters, but the man helping me at Transports was terribly cute and clearly an avid runner based on his ability to help me find the right gear and his knowledge on the differences in brands and fit, etc.

My first experience purchasing at See Jane Run was ok. My second experience left a lot to be desired. They special ordered shoes for me, saying in would be 2 weeks for them to come in. After 3 weeks passed with no word or shoes, I contacted the store. At this point every time I called I was given different information about my shoes. Including being told they couldn’t find my order. Twice I called and was told they would have to call me back, but never did. The staff was consistently unhelpful and didn’t apologize until I went in to the store to get a refund 5 weeks after ordering the shoes (they said they couldn’t refund over the phone). Poor customer service for $ 170 shoes. I highly recommend going elsewhere.

Packet Pick-​up at College Avenue Store for ⁶⁄₂₂ run was a NIGHTMARE!!! I walked in and the older woman at the registration table was snippy «go sign the waiver» never looking up??? Completed the waiver and upon returning to the table 5 minutes later she was on the phone — so the ditzy blonde said she would help… she pulled my bib and I had the audacity to ask for a XXL T-​Shirt (I’m a 40DD) and she appeared surprised and said I could pick up my T-​Shirt on Sunday at the event??? What an inconvenience… I have to lug around a T-​Shirt all Day… Hmmm — why is it every event I sign up for in the Bay Area I have to «jump through hoops» to get a XXL T-Shirt.(Not a good experience).

Terrible. I just called to ask if they have the new Saucony Kinvara 5 in stock. Salesperson asked me multiple times what the ‘kinvara’ was. Are you kidding me? One of the most well-​known and publicized running shoe releases, all over running news and twitter and running blogs, etc., and this lady doesn’t even know about ‘saucony kinvara’? And they currently STOCK kinvara 4’s!!!
Couldn’t give me information about when they might get it in, and kept putting me on hold to ask another equally uninformed lady the questions I was posing (and I could hear their conversation). Unprofessional. And they should stop calling themselves a running specialty store… embarrassing.

Large store with a fantastic collection of women’s running shoes and accessories (love the pepper spray area!) Always greeted and helped by friendly staffmembers.
However, the apparel selection is just okay. A dearth of smalls in most of my favorite pieces. I found this to be the case again with a subsequent visit.

I came into the store looking for a massage ball to help with plantar fasciitis.
Their prices are great, and the store-​keepers didn’t try and up-​sell me on anything and as such I’ll be back next time I need a new pair of running shoes.

I LOVE THIS STORE
Lots of different shoe selections and helpful staff. They are very knowledgeable about the products, are patient and attentive to your needs, and make you feel right at home. Within five minutes of entering the store and asking for shoe advice, she conducted a quick in-​store gait analysis and pulled out 4 pairs for me to try on.
There is a large selection of sports bras and socks, but not so much on running shorts or tanks/​tees. Other than that, prices are totally reasonable and I am very happy with my purchase.

Having decided to lose a little weight and start running again, and having mysteriously lost my old running shoes (no great loss – they were old and beat-​up and chewed-​up by my cat and not that great to begin with), I looked up sports shoes stores on Unilocal and decided to try out See Jane Run. I liked the idea of customized customer service, because I get shin splints really bad when I run on pavement, and I have had stress fractures in the past from running, so I decided I should go for some good shoes this time.
Customer service was great. I explained my needs and the fact that I wanted to stay in a reasonable budget, given that this is just to go jogging a few times a week and I’m not a «serious runner.» The saleslady had me walk and run around the store to see my feet, and brought out a few pairs in my budget that might work for me. They let you give them a «test run» outside, which is really nice, because you can get a much better feel for what kind of support or flexibility they’ll give when you actually get to run in them. Usually I have bought my running shoes at a DSW or one of the Foot Locker type stores in the mall, and that has never been an option, so I’ve bought them more based on price, style and how they feel on my foot standing in a store. With the test run, I was able to actually tell the difference in support and cushion and make the best choice for me.
The pair I got in the end were slightly higher than what I had intended to spend, but not by a lot, and they definitely felt the most comfortable and supportive. I immediately went running in them afterward, around the lake, which is over 3 miles I think, and they felt great. And sure enough, no shin splints today! I think I made the right choice, which was undoubtedly due to having someone give me smart advice about which shoe would actually work for my needs, rather than me just making a decision based on the price or how cute they were. Very pleased and I’ll definitely go back next time I need workout gear.

I love shoes. I just love them. From sandals to boots to espadrilles to kitten heels, I adore shoes and have overflowing shoe racks to prove it. I’ve spent so much money on cute shoes that I am a big cheapo when it comes to functional shoes like sneakers, especially since I do a lot of my exercise barefoot and otherwise don’t wear them.
I literally ran my sneakers into the ground and needed some new ones, and I wanted to support this local business in my neighborhood, so I resisted the urge to buy some cheap ones online and came to See Jane Run. I had no idea that I would receive such top-​notch customer service, or that there was an art to running shoe fitting.
Tesa reviewed my gait and recommended shoes with ankle support, which completely made sense to me because I sometimes have sore ankles. She brought out a lot of different shoes in all shapes and sizes and took a lot of time reviewing each one, watching me walk and jog around the store, and making sure my toes had enough room. I was beyond impressed with the personal attention and customer service, and am so happy with my running shoes that I didn’t want to talk them off for yoga last night.
Run away from Zappo’s and spend your money and time here.

This place is great! I came in because I was experiencing some pain in my back while running and wanted to make sure it wasn’t because of my shoes /​stride. The sales associate had me walk around and assessed my stride and told me that my shoes were probably okay but that it was most likely my form that was causing me pain. I loved that because she wasn’t pressuring me in to buying new shoes when I didn’t really need them. I did however end up wanting to try some on because I wanted a second pair to dedicate just to running. The sales associate was incredibly nice, helpful, and patient — really couldn’t have asked for a better experience! She also only suggested shoes that were within my budget and didn’t try to push the more expensive ones. They even let me jog a little bit outside on the sidewalk to make sure the shoes felt okay.
Also, while paying for my awesome new shoes, I met another lovely sales associate who told me that See Jane Run has running clubs. As a beginner runner who is often too discouraged to go running outside on my own, this was great news, and I intend to go to the Saturday morning beginners running club (a 2 mile loops that starts outside of their store) next week! They also have a longer route for intermediate runners (4 miles), and frequently host 5ks, half marathons, and triathlons.
Overall I had such a great experience here, and I highly recommend this place for runners of all levels. The staff are incredibly knowledgable, and while they don’t sell their own brand of exercise clothes and gear, what they do sell is still high quality, and a lot less expensive than what you can find at lululemon.

After putting it off for quite a while, I finally broke down to buy new sport bras to accommodate my middle-​aged fatness which I thought I was getting rid of last year this time but the damned boobs will NOT go away! The sport bra selection can be quite overwhelming but the staff are helpful and the worst part about this was trying things on. I walked out with two new sport bras — one has been tested and is adequate though to be perfectly comfortable while exercising, I’d rather go down 4″ and a cup size to where I was before — these things are expensive!
Great selection and a lot of awesome stuff on end-​of-​season clearance right now for all you non fat people!
