Sun Sing Pastry Dim Sum

I have been here the same day I also went to Tao Yuen dim sum shop. This was the first place i went to and it was not as crowded as Tao Yuen for what reason i don;‘t really know. While Sun Sing dim sum is good, it’s not as diversified dim sum wise but they all tasted so good regardless. Both of these stores ONLY accepts CASH so forget bringing your Credit/​Debit cards because it would never be honored in both of these stores. We’re already in the 21^st century… I just can’t figure out why most Chinese dim sum places like this do not change or keep up with times and I think that most owners of places like this are short-​changing themselves for not keeping up with times. It would be nice if they have a ATM machines near by or inside the stores so getting money would be easy. Other than this con, everything is good in this place but here’s the Caveat about this place: LEAVE your car at home so take BART or AC Transit because finding a parking space for your car is next to impossible here. If you must bring a vehicle? Bring a motorcycle for there’s plenty of parking in between cars.

Second time here in two weeks. I’m always craving dim sum since it’s not readily available around me. Since moving to Oakland work wise I’ve been BLESSED to have Oakland Chinatown nearby and this has come to be my spot. Pretty standard dim sum, lots of variety including bacon wrapped shrimp and corn cakes?! I have to rave about the shumai though. Best I ever had! It’s so tender, moist and flavorful. Not dry and too dense like other places. Looking forward to it everytime!

W likes this place the best for baked pork buns because of the meat to bun ratio so this is our go-​to place for a snack whenever we are in Chinatown. They have a good variety of little eats to choose from, but I’m not a fan of dining in because the food is never really hot, or even on the warmer side. Most of the time, something will look really good and I’ll order it, but then it ends up tasting mediocre because it isn’t heated.

Located in Oakland’s downtown Chinatown. A fast «to go» dim sum place. A lot of variety and very very reasonable, most choices are about 65 cents!!! Steamed or baked chicken bao, baked was slightly sweet, pillowy soft dough, seasoned hoisin chicken, so good. Steamed shrimp dumplings yum, shrimp and leek dumplings, lots of noodles and Lo mein choices, pot stickers from pork to yummy veggie to shrimp, pork shu mai. The taro dim sum was wayyyyy greasy, I had to sop up the grease with a bunch of napkins, tasted good, but it probably sat too long and just sponged up the grease. Custard tart delicious, sweet bean sesame sticky rice balls were tasty. I will be back, parking can be a bear, all street parking, but hey it’s downtown Oakland.

Argh I am all for cheap Chinese food but that was seriously the worst Sui mai (pork dumplings) that I ever had. I couldn’t even eat it. The bbq pork buns was alriteeeee. I wouldn’t come back

Since I was young this was the go to spot for dim sum on the go and over the years it has changed. They have always carried a wide verity of dim sum (I loved their baked pork buns). 3 stars for service it was great they were always on top of the line of quickness and a negative 2 stars because in my chicken rice wrap there was a metal strip from the scrub pads that was used to clean the pots… scary I know, I bit right into it lucky it was still whole. Sad to say but this place has lost my business. I have gotten bones in some items that shouldn’t have had them.

Another reasonably average Chinatown joint for super cheap take-​out dim sum and Chinese entrees. Given the cheap prices, you’ll be getting what you paid for, and none of the offerings are going to be all that special. Nevertheless, there’s a distinct satisfaction to be had about filling your tummy on the cheap. A perfect Chinatown example of a Unilocal 3-​star establishment.

I’m sad to see so many bad reviews of this place, because I am quite fond of it. Every now and than on a Satuday after I’ve done my barn chores in the morning, I head down to Chinatown to pick up some dim sum to take home for lunch. I usually park somewhere around 12^th and Franklin and pick up something from three places: Sum Yee, Tao Yuen, and this place.
I go Sun Sing for their shrimp noodles and their chive dumplings. Delicious and inexpensive, and I get service with a smile and no one seems to notice that I look a wreck and smell of horse manure.
Sure, I’ve had better dim sum, but for takeout this place is at the top of my list.

Cheap? Absolutely. Delicious? Heck no! I’m no dim sum expert but I eat a LOT of it. I mean I’m having dim sum weekly. This place didn’t meet the mark. I didn’t even eat all of my order because I was so disappointed. The pork bun is the only thing I’d recommend from here.

Went there Friday morning around 9am. I’ve eaten dim sum in San Francisco Chinatown at least a hundred times and this was my first time trying Oakland Chinatown. I had my typical order of har gow, siu mai, and har cheong fun. It was very average. I’ve had much better dim sum and I’ve had much worse dim sum so 3 stars is appropriate. It is relatively cheap compared to a sit down dim sum restaurant but all the other dim sum takeout places in both Chinatowns are just as cheap, too.
I wouldn’t actively seek out any dim sum in Oakland Chinatown over San Francisco but if I was in Oakland and didn’t have a choice this place, like most of Oakland Chinatown, would be just ok. Based on my limited Oakland experience and from what I can tell from other reviews none of the dim sum in Oakland can measure up to San Francisco.

Delish cheap dimsum? Yes please! One of the top tasty and well priced places to go in Oakland China town.
Seriously try the shu Mai and shrimp dumplings. NOMNOMNOM

Unfortunately you get what you pay for. And it’s not very good.
The meats taste like they’re going bad. Hak gow, siu Mai, Even the pastry dim sum like char siu bao all taste fowl and im here at 9am!
Not recommended, you’ll get sick. They’re definitely not following food safety standards. Who knows what your eating.

I honestly came here cause Tao Yuen was closed… but it’s good to try new spots!
Place is pretty much just as cheap as Tao ($ 20 worth is more than enough for two people) but not as good… except their pork bun. I actually preferred the one here even though they only had baked.
Eh the food here just doesn’t taste as fresh. we ordered a pound of chicken feet and I couldn’t even eat it, it was COLD and very rubbery. Super unappetizing for my tastes.
Most things ranged from okay to unappetizing… besides the pork bun the only thing I really liked was the fried shrimp ball which was actually hot and perfectly crispy. The spinach and mung bean dumpling is pretty good too.
Besides that though I don’t really recommend this spot for a meal, maybe just a snack… maybe…

I’ve been to almost every bakery/​restaurant in Oakland’s Chinatown area and although many places have similar baked goods, no where seems to compare to this spot. My go to items here are always the bbq pork buns and the hot dog buns, both of which are always made fresh and always less than $ 1 (You can definitely get full here on less than $ 3). If steamed buns aren’t your thing, this place also offers plenty of traditional Chinese entrees, appetizers (Bacon Wrapped Shrimp Is Awesome), and desserts. Just stop in and see for yourself, but be sure to have cash on hand, no plastic here :)

Definitely not the tastiest dim sum that exists, but it’s cheap and it does the job when you’ve got a hankering for dim sum. Considering the fact that good dim sum requires waking up early over the weekend and/​or waiting in a long line to get a table, being able to walk up and select your dim sum to eat in the comfort of your own home doesn’t sound so bad!
I work nearby and wanted to grab a quick dinner on my way home. This place was still open and it’s across the street from boba, so I decided to give it a try. I got 3 har gow (steamed shrimp dumpling), 1 steamed chive dumpling, 2 steamed egg custard buns, and 2 sesame balls for under $ 6 total. Not bad! NOTE: Cash only!
Here’s my breakdown: The har gow was fishy but not awful. The chive dumpling was pretty darn good. The sesame balls with red bean filling were DELICIOUS and crispy. The egg custard buns were cold by the time I got to them, so they weren’t very good anymore, but that could have been my fault. I’d probably choose the chive dumplings over the shrimp dumplings in the future.
I will be back and next time I’m definitely going to try the bbq pork baked buns! They looked really good, but I’ve had some meh experiences with bbq pork baked buns in Chinatown so I was skeptical… the Unilocal reviews for this place make me want to give them a try. The chow mein also seems like a great deal, so I’ll have to try it out next time! Updated review to come :)

i wanted to check out Oakland’s Chinatown and happened to run across this little Dim Sum shop. They have a bunch of items behind a glass screen that you can choose from. I ended up picking a variety of items (I just pointed at whatever looked good) and the total came out to be roughly $ 5 which seemed dirt cheap for the amount of food I received.
They have a couple tables inside of the shop, where you can sit and eat your freshly made/​steamed food. It was funny because most of workers didn’t speak English and I cannot speak Chinese. I would point to items and they would blurt things in Chinese and I’d just nod and go with it. The food tasted good and honestly I cannot say anything bad about the place.

First time here.
Baked Pork Buns… $ 0.90/bun
Taste 3.5÷5 it was pretty good… but not great.
Filling 3.75÷5 perfectly filled. Wish there was a little more bbq sauce with the pork. Averaged about 4 to 5 chunks of fat per bun.
Bun ⁴⁄₅ when warm, bun is nice and soft. Slight glisten on top bc of the egg wash… bread was semi sweet which makes a good combo with the pork.
Overall.yes I would get that bun again! ;-)

Food spoiled!
I bought some red bean dessert and some of their white sugar cake. When I got home an hour later, as soon as i open the bag, the red bean dessert cake had a sour smell to it. Same with their white sugar cake. Although it only cost me $ 3.00 for four red bean cake and two white sugar cake, it’s pisses me off that they have no regard and they should’ve known that it was spoiled. How can you not smell that foul smell? If they try to stick customers over $ 3.00 what do you think they do to their other food.
Not coming here again.
