TQ’s Union 76

Let me tell you a little story that will put all the foolish comments on here to rest. Years ago, my dad took his car to several mechanics for a persistent issue. Each of the mechanics suggested replacing the transmission which would have cost thousands of dollars. To my dad’s credit, he wasn’t satisfied with their responses and continued his due diligence and stumbled upon TQ’s 76. Toan not only found the issue, but it was only a $ 40 sensor that needed to be replaced! When you find an honest mechanic like Toan with integrity, you strike gold. My family has been coming here for years and all my friends I’ve referred keep coming back.

I$ 10 minimum to use your credit card! To buy something, if you don’t get gas! I put in gas went to park my truck then waited in line to purchase my stuff, he says $ 10 minimum to use my card!, I was like I just put in gas about 10 a 15 Mounties ago after parking my car locking up, waiting in line, he dint believe me or something! So just walk across the street to the other gas station. this older man working there is so blah! You say hi he doesn’t reply, say thank you, hello, nothing, seems miserable, just the vibe he gives off, no offense to him, the restroom never gets clean, very dirty, but the pros is that they have this taco trailer in they’re lot that is excellent, and they got a good selection of candy, I gotta say, and looks like they do vehicle repair,(also the ATM in front but the door charges $ 2.75 to use it and doesn’t Give receipts, and you bank may charge you an extra fee, like mine did!, I went here for almost 2 weeks got money several times before I found out!

I have been going to this gas station for over six years… the old asian man behind the counter didn’t want to give me a sweepstakes 76 card after I asked for one, he told me I needed to buy gas I told him I did… Then he said I couldnt get one unless I bought at least 8 gallons… I told him I did in fact I bought 16 gallons… he then asked me for my pump number… after he verified my info he just handed me the sweepstakes card with a sour look… okay…not a problem… on 7÷22÷15 around 2:30 pm I use my debit card like I always have to get gas… the pump tells me to go see the cashier (40ish Asian lady)… I explain I have always used my card at the pump has something changed where I have to come inside every time I need gas… that rude ass bitch had a scowl on her face and ignored my question… she said how much gas you want… I said I dont know $ 60 (i’m just use to filling up until the nozzle clicks) then she asks me what pump… I tell her… then I say are you going to answer my question she doesn’t respond or look at me… I reached over to swipe my card and then I said you know what nevermind… your rude… I took my ass up the street to chevron… and I got a discount because I shop at Safeway… The younger Asian dude who is the cashier is cool… I have never had a problem when doing business with him… but because of my other experiences that family will never see a dime of my money… so I get to chevron up the street… same thing happened but the cashier explained the card readers are old and need to be upgraded… I recently got a new debit card with a visible chip embedded on the front… okay…but he wasn’t rude… he apologized for the inconvenience… she was unnecessarily rude and dismissive… Fuck her and that business…

I have known Toan for over 20 years, and he has also been my mechanic for that same length of time. All I can say is, to those who are looking for a mechanic they can trust and who will deal with them fairly, BELIEVE THE 5-​STAR REVIEWS YOU SEE HERE. You will not regret it.

I see all these glowing reviews and I hate to leave this one but I also think it would not be honest if I had nothing to say about my experience with this company. On 4÷26÷13 I took my car to TQ’s to be smogged. I shopped around and after reading the reviews thought I had struck gold. Considering that this shop is only a block away from my house I thought this was going to be a sweet deal. If all went well I would have a new mechanic and I would take all my work to him. I have a ’91 Nissan Sentra that I’ve taken relatively good care of. It had in excess of 200,000 miles on it at the time, a few quirks here and there but was running relatively well.
To make a long story short I failed the test. I needed to replace an exhaust valve because it failed the emissions test. The part that was hard to hear was that he wouldn’t work on the car. He recommended that I buy a new one. So much for the reviews of older cars he cared for, mine was just not good enough. So I paid $ 50 just to fail a test without hope of any reparations.
It is now 2015 and I’m still driving the same car, only after taking it somewhere else. I paid another $ 50 for the test, repaired what was wrong with it and now have a new mechanic I can trust and one who values what I drive and the work he puts into it.

Great place: honest, fair, & competent. It helps to have a good mechanic, and Toan is your guy. He & his staff actually care about your vehicle & your limited funds, and do not take advantage of women who may not speak the auto repair language or aren’t mechanically-​inclined. Highly recommended. They have a little snack shack attached too for on the road snacks and sundries.

I moved to Oakland 3 years ago after driving cross country. My clutch and various parts car were falling apart along my trip. I pulled up to 76. The guy looked at it for free, told me it needed about $ 3000 worth of work, but the car was only worth about $ 1000. He didn’t charge me anything, I truly appreciated his honestly. I drove to Honda of Oakland, where they offered me $ 1000 trade in (so the 76 guy had a good estimate!). I felt bad because I bought a new car with a maintenance package from Honda of Oakland, so I didn’t think I would need to go back to 76, and again he had gained my trust. However, over the past three years, I have been frustrated with Honda of Oakland ‘s greedy policies, and I have found myself coming to 76 anyway. It started with a windshield wiper that wouldn’t squirt water, Honda of Oakland wanted to charge me $ 150 to diagnose the problem, plus the cost to fix it. 76 looked at it, saw it was dirty, cleaned the dirt that was obstructing the water, it works great, and it diagnosed it and fixed it for free. When my car was due for maintenance, I got the quote from Honda of Oakland, I called 76, who gave me a quote for hundreds left, so I brought it there. And I bring it there from now on.
You can trust this guy. I ask him for advice about maintenance and he gives thoughtful answers that are not manipulative with getting the sell, but rather focus on having a happy customer who is driving a safe car. I really appreciate this guy. Thank you!

Toan has kept my 1990 Chrysler New Yorker going for the past four years, and kept it going for its previous owner for years before that. Everyone has for real already said how great he is, but I just want to underline that he is a genuinely nice guy, does amazing work, is not a condescending jerk if you’re a woman like some mechanics can be, and is really honest and fair. My car is 24 years old, I’m pretty sure he understands I can’t afford another one, and he’s clear about how to get the most for my money, what can wait and what needs to get fixed right away, and he’s cut me really good deals while not scrimping on quality. He’s also not a snob– even though my car is, in some regards, a beater, (a hot one, though!) he’s always respectful to me and her. All my friends go nowhere else.

Everyone has already said all the great things about Toan and his business, but I can’t help posting another five star review because it’s all so true. The latest blessing is when my car broke down on Saturday night and I had it towed to his lot Sunday morning. I went to talk to him Monday when he came in, hoping he could squeeze me in, he had my car ready by 3, despite the full schedule he already had. Not only that, he was able to repair something that could have cost me my engine! Instead it was $ 220.

Toan has been working on my 2000 Jeep since about 2001. He has made it possible to pass the 300,000 mile mark with my Jeep! It is no wonder he has a line of cars waiting for his care and attention. He is always looking down the road, advising me on what needs to be done next, knowing that I liked the car and wanted to hang on to it. And amazingly it has been a pretty economical car to own. I attribute that to Toan’s knowledge and advice, guiding me as if I were in his own family.
We have put a lot of miles on that Jeep together, and I want to say a big «THANKS» to Toan and his team. Great people doing a good job.

Toan is scrupulously honest, courteous and attentive. He remembered my previous visit despite a crazy-​busy flow of cars through his doors. I really appreciate his help. I only wish he were closer to a BART station.

Toan is just a magnificent person. After trying a number of mechanics in Berkeley and North Oakland, I finally found Toan. I’m never going to anybody else. I hope he outlives me. He has worked on my Toyota, my RAM truck, even my old boat of a mercedes. He is knowledgeable, hard working, earnest, honest, kind, never rushed, professional, gracious, and will search for the best deal on the best parts. Just wonderful.

This is the best service place I have been to in the Bay Area. Toan is not only a great mechanic, he is kind and fair. He has provided fast and thorough service every single time I’ve been there. If I drop by with a quick question about my vehicle, he takes the time to have a look and give advice or schedule me in as soon as possible. He always seems to be weighing my best interest as a car owner and he is more than fair in his pricing. This is one of those review you almost hate to write because to don’t want to send the mobs to your favorite place, but these guys deserve it – Toan and his crew are amazing!

Time and again, Toan has fixed our not so reliable cars quickly and at a fair price. By far, the best mechanic I have had. And a nice guy, to boot.

Fast, reliable mechanics! I have an ancient (early 90s) Camry as well as a Prius. Toan takes care of both and keeps me happy and on the road. Thanks to Toan, that Camry has been on the road for an additional 7 years and counting after having a life-​threatening (car) illness. That repair was WAY more cost effective than getting another car. He takes care of the computerized Prius too.

I have taken multiple cars to Tuan over the last couple of years. He is honest-​fast-​SO pleasant and helpful. He has consistently been great, reasonably priced and always super helpful. I wouldn’t think of going to another mechanic. highly recommend…

Toan is the most amazing mechanic ever. He has sooo much knowledge and experience, nothing fazes him. He is amazing at explaining things. Honest, and affordable. Trustworthy and efficient.

Tuon is fantastic. Brought my Mom’s piece of junk chevy celebrity in. On it’s last leg but need it to run for two more months. He really understood that I didn’t want to dump a lot of money into it just needed to understand if it would last. The blinkers had gone out and were making my mom feel unsafe. Did not want to spend hundreds on this junker. Tuon was great. Did what he could. Explained his take on it in detail multiple times. Was very generous with his time and talents and gave me an amazing deal. Thanks Tuon.

Toan Nguyen is the best mechanic I’ve ever had. He is unbelievably fast, efficient, honest, and always has the best prices. I’ve been to other mechanics in the past, and Toan always had comparatively better rates, but now I don’t even check anywhere else because I trust that Toan will give me the best deal he possibly can.
I’ve taken two different cars to TQ’s Union 76 and Toan’s done amazing work on both of them. He test drives my car (extra long!) to check for safety after he’s done any work, he fixes little things here and there without even charging me, and he’s so nice and accommodating every time I go in there.
TQ’s Union 76 is open M-​S pretty much all day (not sure of the exact hours, probably at least 8 – 6 or 7), and Toan’s always there. He is putting his son through school, so he works very hard (and too much). :(I would recommend him wholeheartedly to anyone – I trust him with my car implicitly.
