Women’s Cancer Resource Center

Wonderful program for women who are currently fighting a cancer diagnosis. Many opportunities to connect with other local women who are facing the same cancer diagnosis. Support groups also available for specific cancer diagnosis.

I have volunteered with the WCRC for over 15 years (off and on) and I always come back to the center when I have the time to volunteer. I belive in this organization as a cancer researcher, oncology coordinator and as the daughter of a cancer survivor. I have known Margo and Dolores for many years and always feel wecomed in their second home. The center is bustling with harding working staff who fundraise, find new and informative classes for clients and provide ongoing resources for folks who call into the center. They make a concerted effort to help anyone who needs it. The WCRC works with outside vendors for some of their services (counseling, etc)…most services are offered on a volunteer basis. WCRC is the «go to» place for anyone who seeks information on any cancer. They are LGBT friendly and sensitive to women from all walks of life. Caretakers and their spouses will appreciate their extensive library ranging from health to science to emotional support. Come check them out!

I’m really disappointed with this non-​profit. I originally had an appt back in october which I had to cancel last minute to see my oncologist because we thought my cancer was back. That was my bad. I finally rescheduled it and I get there at 2:20pm (actually before that but I just walked around wasting time) when my appt was schedule for 2:45. I go in at 2:30 and just sit and wait. And wait some more. 2:47 rolls around and I do not get a call from her — nothing. So I call her and she says she’s running late and she’ll be there shortly. It’s now 3pm and she calls me back and asks me where i’m at. Turns out she went to another location and asks me if I can come there. I do not drive and I had no clue where she was asking me to go so I just tell her that I will go through another organization. She says she can come to me but doesn’t have a key to get into her office because she’s subleasing it or something and asks if we can talk openly about my psychological history in front of zachary’s pizza parlor in Rockridge. I tell her I don’t feel comfortable with that and so she gives my bike and I a lift to the center. I know mistakes happen, but for people like me who can’t deal with small things like this, it ruined my day. I extended my arm out to shake her hand and she just breezed right past me and it felt like a dis. I did not get the feeling that I was wanted as a patient/​client or even cared about honestly. She made the comment that they couldn’t fill the support groups they had so they weren’t happening. As a woman with cancer, I do not feel that the Womens cancer Resource center has anything to offer me or even cared about me.

Ms Dolores and the crew there have been a blessing, as a cancer patient there sista 2 sista group has been a way to understand express myself/​feelings. I thank them for all the resources and support. Once of the best places I know that has open material for people to read.
Wonderful place for books and materials…

I can’t begin to tell you what a Godsend this place is. It’s so much more than a resource center — it’s a support center, safe and warm as a womb, healing as a spa. The staff members are respectful, gentle, and welcoming, and are eager to help in any way, even if by simply listening, if that’s what you need.
Unfortunately, I didn’t learn about the WCRC until after my cancer treatment, when I felt completely disoriented and had sunk into a deep depression. The post-​treatment support group provided comfort and community and helped me get back to my old self.
Best of all, the services are free, which is huge when you’ve received a diagnosis of cancer.
Again, the WCRC is a Godsend, and its staff are angels.

Although I’ve known about this wonderful organization for years I didn’t take advantage of their services till my second bout with cancer. I am currently in a support group with woman with the same type of cancer. It’s a hell of a way to meet new friends but it is a comforting space to commiserate with others going through the same thing. Only a fellow patient understands the fears, bureaucracies, ups and downs of a cancer «journey.»
They have been around since 1986. A small group of women with cancer created the Women’s Cancer Resource Center to provide direct services to women with cancer as well as advocate for broad changes in the health care system. Over the years they have grown from just a handful of staff and volunteers to 7 staff members and over 120 dedicated volunteers.
They seem to know how to talk to people in just the right way. When I was re –diagnosed with cancer late last year I was in a lot of denial.
(C’mon God, not again – Give me an effing break!) I knew I needed support and resources and reluctantly came here. I was greeted with just the right amount of warmth and felt immediately safe and welcomed.
Besides the support groups they offer workshops, a library and telephone referrals and information. They also call and check in on me once a month.
I recently got an affordable acupuncture referral which I am going to follow up on soon.
