Specialties

Shakespeare’s Globe in rural West TX. We specialize in producing not only Shakespeare shows but modern shows as well. We are a community theatre with our mission– To create exciting theatre-embracing our roots in Shakespeare who wrote that the purpose of playing was «to hold as «twere a mirror up to nature” — to provide entertainment, education, and generate economic diversification and growth.

History

Established in 1958.

In 1958, a woman named Marjorie Morris, in the West Texas oil patch had a dream and chartered The Globe of the Great Southwest, Inc. (The Globe) as a 501©(3) non-profit organization. Armed with the best research of the time, she (and others) raised funds and built a theatre facility that is modeled after The Globe Theatre used by Shakespeare’s theatre company in England. The theatre opened and began producing in 1968. Because of its unique shape and building materials — primarily wood and plaster — the theatre boasts nearly perfect acoustics. Though it seats over 400 people, the 1,800 square foot stage is thrust into the audience to create an intimate actor-audience relationship as it was in Shakespeare’s day. The campus now includes a reproduction Anne Hathaway’s Cottage (Shakespeare’s wife), writers’ garden and a Black Box.
