Very yummy, but a bit overpriced. 1.95 for one chocolate chip cookie. really?

A few things:
(1) Another reviewer apparently got gruyère spread with her baguette toast. This was a mistake that has been corrected. I go to Prairie Thunder at least once a week and get the baguette toast all the time. It’s always great and comes with slices of real, melty gruyère cheese.
(2) After writing my first review, I tried the breakfast plate. It’s awesome, and comes with a slice of toast. The pain au levain (sourdough) is to die for!
(3) I’m finally going to reveal my favorite baked good, because Prairie hasn’t been baking them lately and I want them to know they’re in demand. If you drop in, ORDER A CHOCOLATE CHIP MUFFIN! Best muffin I’ve ever tasted.

Too expensive and poor customer service. I would not go back. Better options all around.

When going just for pastries and bread, this place is great. I love the savory croissant especially and it reheats very well. The regular croissant has the perfect soft crunch on the outside with a buttery melts-​in-​your-​mouth inside. Delicious!
The regular food, however, is not quite as I expected. I ordered the baguette toast and hot chocolate (which came with a salted caramel marshmallow). The hot chocolate came out first, which was anything but hot. It was room temperature, borderline cool. As a result the marshmallow (which tasted like a plain marshmallow with one line of a drizzle of caramel on top) did not even melt — it just became a gooey spongy mess left in the bottom of the cup once the liquid chocolate (NOT hot) was finished.
The baguette toast on the menu says it has bacon, 2 eggs your way (I chose scrambled), and gruyère. What I got was the toasted baguette with shaved ham (not even Canadian bacon), the scrambled eggs, and gruyère spread on the side. What happened to the bacon shown in the fancy picture here on Unilocal?Or that is listed on the menu? Why is it gruyère spread instead of just regular gruyère cheese? Makes for a mess if you want it spread on the baguette because you have to take all the food off the bread just to spread it on.
I will say the portion was a great size for what you pay. I could not finish it all. But considering that it wasn’t what I was expecting, did not include what it said it would, and had a flavor that was just ok (nothing stand out about it), I’m not likely to return for their meals. But I’ll be back for those croissants!

Wanted to love it and have tried and tried, but I just can’t!!!
1. The rude employees and owner.
2. They try to act hoity toity by saying they are an upscale French bakery and that is why they don’t sell iced cookies or other regular bakery items. Seriously?!? You named the place «Prairie Thunder not Chez Prairie! Ever wonder why Irma’s, McNelly’s and a few other places are packed and your place is so empty you can hear crickets during the lunch hour?!? Stop being pretentious and serve OKC what they like.
3. Even for Midtown the prices are ridiculous. A «healthy» box with about 10 grapes, a little bread, a cold cut and two dice-​sized cubes of cheese is almost $ 14. What?!?
Stay far away from this place. Brown’s bakery across the street is so much nicer and accommodating. Irma’s, McNelly’s, and even Subway have better choices, customer service and selection.

Prairie Thunder Baking Company is more than just a bakery– it’s a delightful café/​bistro and meeting spot. I was surprised when a colleague chose PTBC for a lunch meeting as I was unaware that they offered lunch. I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of food and service. I ordered the cup of tomato basil soup paired with half of their featured fall salad. Both items were delicious and the staff helped guide my choices by thoroughly explaining the selection and their favorite items. Of course my colleague and I also split some baked treats and they were equally good.
PTBC is like the beautiful love child of Panera and La Madeleine with an OKC twist. I will be coming back again and again!

Do you like the 1920’s and 30’s, then this is the place for you. When you walk into the bakery you feel like you have been transported back to this era. It feels like the old school bakery you would have expected. The dinning space is fairly large, but the tables are fairly small.
We had ok service while here. Mostly the cashier seemed very disinterested in his job, but this did not hurt my overall impression of the bakery.
We came here based on a recommendation. We were told we had to try the croissants, because they taste and feel like the ones you get when in France. I personally can’t say if they do or don’t, but we had the chocolate croissant and almond croissant. They both tasted very good and had a good texture. We also tried the half and half Danish. This was my personal favorite of the three that we tried. The last thing we had was a house coffee which in the terms of coffee was pretty average.
We will be back here in the future.

I’m going to give this place a full 5 stars because I continue to have amazing experiences here. However, a few things could be better, so I’ll leave those comments below and maybe management will look.
This is hands-​down the best bread in Oklahoma City. They have a full rotation of bread available daily or weekly, and new choices are offered constantly. The pastry selection is like nothing else. The sweetness is never overwhelming or «cheap» tasting. I find their prices to be honest, and they are very upfront when commodity prices affect their final products, e.g. the recent rise in egg prices. The lunch options are broad and slightly off the beaten path. It is currently my go-​to Saturday breakfast place. The bottom line is that the quality is second to none, and then atmosphere is warm, intelligent, and friendly.
Prairie Thunder would be wise to invest in their coffee/​espresso bar. With better options right in the neighborhood (Slingers, Elemental) if I want coffee in the morning, I’m not tempted to go here. They could easily get more money out of me every time, if their pastries AND coffee were first-​class.
I never seem to hear music being played. Is there a reason for this? When the restaurant isn’t full, the lack of sound is very obvious and strange to me.
Lastly, as other reviews have mentioned, the art deco décor is really great. The standalone tables have a modernist metal base… but you can barely admire them, as the chairs are thick wood and lack style. They just don’t integrate well into the overall design of the place. Food for thought.
Quit buying your bread anywhere else. It’s definitely 5 stars.

Great food, (breakfast croissant) was amazing. Hot food, good service, good feel. Would return if we lived here!

Stewed tomatoes on a sandwich??? Yuck!!! What happened to that delicious sandwich I used to enjoy??? Ingredients just thrown on bread!!! The focaccia was so thick that I am taking it home to feed the birds all afternoon!!! Talking to manager was to no avail. No empathy at all!!! I will not be back!!!

6 months ago I would have given them 5 stars. I absolutely LOVED their chicken salad sandwich, until now :(. It used to come on focaccia bread I think, and the chicken salad was simple and delicious. Now, it comes on a croissant (still good, but not as good as the bread it used to come on) and the salad has tons of other ingredients in it. They top it with dried cranberries and they add a delicate sweetness that I appreciated. They still come on it, but the salad also has celery and apples and who knows what else, where it used to be this creamy chicken and grapes and a creamy mayo and that was it. It is nice that they offer discounts for certain professions each day (I go on a Wednesday if I can, its medical field day, 30% off!!). Over all I really like PTBC, but I’m afraid I am going to have to find a new sandwich to eat when I go there!

This is one of my favorite places to stop for breakfast or a pastry on my morning commute. I’m always wondering why it’s never very busy and happy it’s not at the same time. The staff is always friendly and helpful. Service is quick and efficient. Highly recommend their almond croissants.

I get croissants from Prairie Thunder almost every other week. Their croissants are some of the best I’ve had anywhere– beautifully crisp outside and perfectly moist on the inside. I’ve had almost all their varieties of croissant, including savory, chocolate, almond, but my favorite is their whole wheat croissant. It’s stout and buttery, with a crust to die for. Their breads, sandwiches, and cooked breakfasts are excellent (especially the migas), but the real star of the show is the croissants.
My only gripe would be that their coffee isn’t the greatest– but I wouldn’t want them to take any time away from baking their wonderful creations to change that.
A must visit in OKC.

As often as I frequent McNellie’s, you’d think I’d have visited PTBC multiple times. However, last week marked my first visit and I was pleasantly surprised.
PTBC has a wonderful vibe and I couldn’t help but smile upon entering. The staff was so polite and very helpful. I probably asked more questions than any other first timer ever has, so I really appreciated their patience.
The food was fantastic. I had the club sandwich on what I believe was some variation of a flax seed/​wheat bread. It was completely different from any bread I’ve ever tasted and I immediately became a fan. Honestly, it was hard to settle on what I wanted with all of the tasty options.
Also worth noting is the serving size of their sandwiches. They are freakin’ huge! I could only eat half of the sandwich, before I forced myself to ask for a to-​go box. Overall, I was very satisfied with my visit and look forward to eating at PTBC again!

BEST BAKERY AND SANDWICH IN TOWN
How could it miss! Take the best bread in Oklahoma CIty and add fresh meats and cheeses mix with wonderful smiling service and you have a winner of a place for lunch. This is one of my favorite places for lunch — I will drive over 20 miles to eat here. ALWAYS PICK UP A COUPLE OF LOAVES OF ARTISAN BREAD AS I LEAVE.

This place has such potential. I think the owner needs to hire a really good manager and then get out of the way. Please.

My toasted almond croissant was perfectly done. The outer layer was nice and crispy while the inner layers were good, chewy and super moist, all without being too sweet. The reason for only having a four star rating is simply because this croissant is the only thing that I tried there. I will need to go back just one or two more times, and at that time I will update my review.

I ran the Downtown Dash, a 5K that ran through Midtown. With my packet, I got a coupon book for a lot of midtown businesses, many that I’d never tried before. Prairie Thunder Baking Company was one, a coupon for $ 5 off a loaf of artisan bread. I went in after work one day, so the selection was scarce (now I know to go either before work or at lunch), but I got a honey wheat bread with sunflower seeds that actually ended up being free because it was a half size loaf and less than $ 5. I love it! I’m a sucker for bread and carbs of any kind, really, and the bread has a crispy-​but-​not-​too-​crispy crust but is super soft and fluffy on the inside. I was told they had rosemary olive oil ciabatta bread earlier that day, which I will have to come back and try. I’ll definitely be back to try their breakfast or lunch selections, and now I now where to go if I need some fresh delicious bread!

I love this place! I’ve been twice for breakfast now and once for lunch. Their prices are slightly high but the quality is fantastic and their portions are very large. I had the ham and cheese croissant and half of it was plenty for me so I suggest splitting it with a friend. I also had their breakfast sundae which was bananas, yogurt and their homemade granola on top. Once again, it was plenty for two people so I think it’s worth the $ 6.50 or so cost. Also, they accept the Allied Arts City Card so you’ll get a small discount there too. I can’t wait to try more of their menu because if it’s all as great as what I’ve had so far, then I know I won’t be disappointed.
