History

Established in 1956.

Started out as The Koffee House Systems chain of diners in Omaha, Broken Bow and North Platte. Harold Halstead continued the business in his name. The family has owned and operated it ever since. You will see mother’s, sons, daughters, cousins and friends working there every day.

I am a local North Omahan. As a kid I remember laughing at Grandpa Harold’s quirky ways and small talk. I started out doing dishes from a young age and then cooked my way through High School. I graduated from UNK Kearney, NE where I cooked my way through college. Every day I missed the good home cooking of Harold’s! I worked in the Natural Resources field for 16 years in Grand Island, NE and longed for a good place to eat breakfast! In 2011 I decided to shake up my life and become part owner with my Mom at Grandpa’s restaurant. I am always busy trying to keep Harold’s food and service on its «A“game like Grandpa did!

I am not lying when I say that this is my favorite dining establishment that I have ever been to.
My family and I first came upon this place about 10 years ago when we were looking for a spot to eat at after leaving the airport, and even with as simple a meal as a burger, the greatest mashed potatoes and gravy you will ever have and glass of milk inspired me to the point of returning any time I am in the area.
I’ve probably been to this place 5 times now… basically whenever I fly in there to head towards my grandparents. I have had breakfast food as well as lunch meals, and I haven’t had anything that was bad.
The service is impeccable… when I think of people being nicer in the Midwest it is 20% due to just this establishment. I even have bought a shirt from this place and it is probably the coolest shirt I own.
Like others have said the prices are extremely reasonable, and if you go here and don’t think it’s worth while I think that you may need to get your taste buds checked. If I were to take someone from outside of the country to an «American» spot for food, this would be my first choice.

Harold’s is one of my favorite diners. The prices are reasonable, service outstanding and the food is good. It’s not often I get to go, because it’s hard to get a table. When I do I get the French toast with cinnamon roll to go.

We drive by this place all the time and decided to try it out rather than drive to our usual place downtown. It was pretty busy but the hostess cleaned up a table right away. We tried the double decker breakfast sandwich and the steak and eggs. The sandwich was hot and served on texas toast, i chose bacon and sausage for my meats and it rocked. The sirloin steak was juicy at medium and lightly seasoned. The hasbrowns are homemade not the frozen kind so a plus. Prices are reasonable and the staff very attentive to refills and friendly. Its locally owned so eat and support a local family biz.

If you’re looking for a wonderful old fashioned diner for breakfast, this is your place. It was established in the late 50’s and it has continued to maintain itself in that manner. The food was exactly what was described and only needed a little bit of seasoning because of the fresh flavor of the ingredients used. Best part was the service, we had a waitress that reminds you of everything from the movie depictions of a great diner waitress from back in the day.

Adorable, classic 1950s diner off of N 30th & State. Great menu variety and great prices. The service was outstanding. I drink my coffee very slowly and even still, she topped me off every 5 mins so I never ever had a cold cup! Our server (Tammy??? Or Pam?) was absolutely wonderful and made our experience very special. The homemade salsa was amazing, the homemade pancakes were fluffy, and our breakfast was hot and fresh. We’ve only enjoyed breakfast so far, but we plan to return for lunch someday soon. Was a wonderful experience all around!

I ordered my usual bacon and cheese omelet for breakfast. They say hash browns but it’s cottage fries, which were burnt. The biscuit was awful and the omelet was greasy. I should have held out a couple of hours and gone someplace good for lunch. Maybe I hit them on a bad day, but that biscuit really sucked bad.

Great little down home place. I’m a california boy but omaha several times a year. This is a great spot near the airport.
Service is incredible. I felt like i was one if the locals from the first minute. Loved sitting there by myself and watching as the place grew busier and busier by the minute all the old timers would sit down and servers knew exactly what they wanted.
I cant wait to go back. If you are from out of town hit this place and just sit back and feel like family.
Food was really good i had breakfast. It is down home old school diner /​coffee shop to the core. Oh and get the home made bread for your toast. Awesome !!!

Service is amazing. Say «HEY!» to Pam and Lisa for me! I had a simple breakfast, two fried eggs and homemade biscuit. I enjoyed both. I was sent home with some homemade donuts which were a hit with my coworkers. This will probably be my go-​to for a quick breakfast with an old school diner feel, would recommend it for the same.

We came here during Florence Days and i had a pleasant experience. The diner was typical of most family run diners. Food was typical, nothing amazing, and nothing disappointing. My typical breakfast at diners consist of ham, eggs, toast, and hash browns. On occasion, i’ll get a pancake. I didn’t get a pancake this time, but got a pecan roll. I’ve just discovered my love for pecans and this was a great item to try, as they are made in house. The staff was super friendly and we were in and out in a timely fashion even though they were super busy.
My only complaint was that the pecan roll was microwaved. I would have preferred it warmed another way.

Wonderful place in the family diner tradition. Terrific service. Warm, friendly, and competent.
Quality of food, while always acceptable, depends on the cook. Consistency in food prep is an issue, but not enough to avoid. Portion size as well can get a little skimpy at times. Note to ownership: a hearty plate of hash browns is in the scheme of things good for business and not a foolish cost. Think of it as advertising.
That said this diner is a treasure. Try it out sometime.

Easily my favorite diner experience in Omaha so far. The bright colors are inviting and puts you in a good mood to start the day. The place is seat yourself service but luckily it is large enough that I doubt the wait ever gets too out of control. It was Sunday brunch and it was crowded, a group of 10 had just been seated before us so our server provided us with free doughnuts, they were phenominal and then the food wait wasn’t even too long! Super friendly service and I never even got to see the bottom of my coffee mug.
My party and I split the corned beef hash and the chicken fried steak with a biscuit and pancake. Tip: get the biscuit with hash that comes with a side of gravy… Free B&Gs! Both plates were delicious, the fried steak being the favorite.
Will be back for sure and I suggest if you haven’t been to Florence to explore the area, we found a lot of historical sites to visit nearby. There was a restored bank from the 1800s right across the street.

I went to Harold’s coffee house a few weeks ago before the Florence Days festivities started.
Harold’s was packed and it was no different on the Saturday morning that I went. We found a table and placed our order. The inside was basically set up like a 50’s diner. It was pretty cool to take a trip back to the 50’s.
I ordered the ‘2 on Top’, which is hashbrowns with sausage, gravy, and two eggs on top. It was okay, nothing too special. For $ 7, I expected a tad more, but the size was okay. My wife had a homemade pecan roll, which I tasted, and that was good.
The service was pretty good for the most part, they were super busy but managed to get our food to us in a decent amount of time, about 25 minutes.
Overall, my meal was a little underwhelming. I would like to go back and try some of their lunch items to see if they can redeem themselves in my eyes.

I really wanted to like this place because it is a legendary Omaha spot. The place was packed on a Sunday morning. The service was very good, and the owner came around to check on us.
Food: the highlight was the homemade baked goods like the pecan roll and homemade bread. I ordered Susie’s special (how could I not with the name?!), but I found it to be pretty flavorless with eggs and cut up onions scrambled together on a plate. I also thought the coffee was bitter, and I was surprised to learn they sell the beans by the pound.
I look forward to coming back to try their lunch menu.

I will echo Shelby B.‘s sentiment on Harold’s being «the quintessential diner experience.» I dined here last Sunday and cannot stop talking about the place.
The place was packed for breakfast. My party and I patiently waited at the counter on stools until a booth opened up. We were promptly asked if we’d like coffee while we waited; I obliged.
Eventually, we moved to a small booth. Once there, we were instantly greeted by Lisa, our superstar server whom we loved. We ordered a bacon and mushroom omelette with pancake ($ 8+), cinnamon toast (just under $ 3), and three homemade doughnuts to go. The pancake was a standout, as were the doughnuts.
Food was served nice and warm, and was tasty to match. My coffee was refilled seamlessly, and service overall was exceptional. Oh, and the atmosphere — totally old school, totally awesome. My suggestion: Find a spot overlooking the place, sit back and enjoy. Prices were reasonable.

ANY old time diner experience is a great time but, maybe it was just us, the food didn’t match the quality of the staff or décor. I had the corn beef hash which I enjoyed but the biscuit and gravy didn’t live up to what I hoped (biscuit was dry). Overall, it’s a place that should be tried (especially for diner fans) but I wouldn’t make the trip just to eat.

Harold’s is the quintessential diner experience. The atmosphere is exactly what you want in a diner. Sit at a booth (still in 50’s powder blue vinyl), or take a seat at one of the stools at the counter while always friendly servers help you out. The service has always been friendly, especially kind to our young daughter when we go. Their lunch fare is good, but I get breakfast here 99% of the times we stop by. The usual is their pancakes, fresh made sausage patty, and hash browns. Simple, delicious diner breakfast usually rounded out by always topped off coffee and some orange juice. My wife is a fan of their Susie’s Special, and our daughter usually gets the kids pancake, which comes with whip cream and banana slices in the shape of a face. My parents always request to come here for breakfast when they are in town to visit; my mom usually getting a piece of fresh made pie for breakfast, and some donuts to go!
This place isn’t fancy, or trendy, they simply are very good at what they do; friendly service and tasty food. I love it!

I remember coming here often as a kid with my Grandpa who lived in the neighborhood. We always had the hot roast beef sandwiches and mulligan stew for lunch. Though it’s been years since I’ve been, this place brings back fond memories for me. I hope Omahans keep patronizing places like Harold’s, the local mom and pop diners are few and far between.
