I used to live in Houston’s K-town. I got used to the food and groceries, both as a matter of taste and as a matter of habit. When I moved to Omaha, I was at a loss. Where was I going to get my kimchi? Yakult? Seaweed? Skin care? Snacks? Sesame oil? Ramyun? Gallon of green tea? Choco pies? Onion rings? The food I have become used to for the past 5 years!?! I puttered around in sadness until Unilocal pointed me to Midwest Oriental Foods. The proprietor greeted my husband and I, and I quickly found everything I needed. Everything. The only thing missing here would be specific skin care brands — but that’s what the internet is for, right? Unilocal was right. The BEST kimchi in town. I didn’t have to ferment the jar very long, and it tasted fine fresh. I have yet to open the radish kimchi, but it looks fine. The proprietor and my husband spoke while I inspected things. He is very friendly and so helpful. He even threw in two sweet redbean jelly bars — which I’m snacking on right now. What’s there not to love?

I stopped in here to purchase kimchi, since my doctor had suggested I try it. The gentleman who waited on me, who I assume was the owner, was courteous and very knowledgeable and helped me make my decision and purchase. This store reminded me very much of a small, quaint family-run country general store and I liked that. I hope they can make a go of it. Hard to do in a shopping mall that’s not populated very well.

Josh B is a perfect example on why small businesses aimed at expanding cultural mindsets will not thrive in Omaha. There’s few things that get me angry: bigots like Josh are one of those things. The market is great if you’re looking for speciality items, and it is run by a family. Having said this, the service is kind and very personable.

I love this store. The owner is always very helpful when I bring in Korean recipes and finds me the correct ingredients that I will need. He really is a great resource for helping make your recipes more authentic. The store is on the smaller side, but the layout is very easy to get through, and to find what items you need. They have a large kimchi selection right up front, and the fresh kimchi is delivered on Tuesdays. Saturdays they have kimbap in the mornings, and once I remember to write down the hours I will be sure to add them onto this review. I have been going to this store for the better part of 4 years, and have always been helped in a prompt and friendly manner, and always consider it the best part of any shopping trip.
