Microtel Inn & Suites Opelika

Stayed here last night. The rooms are pretty decent and the staff seemed friendly. My biggest dislike is that our window backed up to a parking lot that cars drove through all night and the hotel lobby was super crowded and loud before 7:30 am. I went down to get what was advertised as a continental breakfast, but turned out to be leftovers from a rush of over 40 foreign travelers. You would think the hotel would have been more prepared for so many people. There was cold hard biscuits, cold sausage gravy and very little to nothing else. I’ll save my appetite for actual food elsewhere. Either way, I wasn’t too pleased with anything outside of the room. Would I stay again? Yea, the rooms were decent. But be aware, they jack up the prices for a Motel 6 type hotel…
Update: found mold on the ice bucket. Not cool!!!

This is a great place to stay for travelers! I usually stay here at least once a week. The staff is always very friendly, clean rooms and good rates! They have a better than average breakfast, good selection for just about everyone.

Micro Hell
We stayed at this location for two nights during Graduation weekend and paid $ 150/​night for what we thought would be a halfway decent hotel– boy, were we wrong.
What we got instead, was a tiny room that smelled of mildew, a view of the top of an overhang covered in mildew, leaves and various other debris that has clearly never been cleaned and stained carpets. The walls were painted a urine yellow and puke green in case you had any remaining thoughts that the room might not be garbage.
The hotel was kind enough to prepare an unrequested hotel-​wide 7:14am wake up call in the form of the loudest smoke detectors I’ve ever heard going off. A guest sneaking a morning drag from a cigarette in the bathroom you guess? Nope. According to the staff «yeah, not sorry) that has been happening lately»… So are we trying to fix it or is that just something our hotel does now? The upside was we were awake to watch the sunrise through our curtain which lets in an enormous amount of light despite being closed. Thanks Microtel
The bathroom is also equipped with a granite counter that extends too far over the toilet. If you ladies are tired of your man leaving the seats up, rejoice at the fact that the seat cannot go all the way up and slams down immediately if not being held up, meaning it will be impossible for him to leave it up. Of course, this also means that he will have to hold the seat up the entire time he’s using the restroom. Thanks Microtel.
Lastly, the wall-​mounted TV has its cords completely exposed from all sides, all of which could easily have been tucked in. A deal killer? No. It is however a perfect symbol of how little the staff is paying attention to the rooms it is charging its guests for and how it is avoiding even the smallest bit of effort to improve these atrocious rooms.

I reserved a room through the 800 number and received a 20% discount for being a member of Sam’s Club, which made the room a great value. But, I was taken aback by the small size when I first entered the room. And then it dawned on me. Duh, micro equals small. It reminded me of pod hotels I’ve stayed at in New York, designed to maximize space. I admit the room was pretty cute. The bench seat underneath the window was cool, with built in drawers and the heating/​air unit underneath.
Here are some pluses:
The room comes with a microwave, coffee maker and mini refrigerator, perfect if you’re staying for several days.
The tub and shower are a nice size. While the bathroom counter space isn’t large, it is adequate.
The hotel is clean, well maintained and still feels new, only 4 years old.
A free breakfast included scrambled eggs, sausage, cereal, toast, muffins, bagels, waffles, coffee and juice.
There are free copies of USA Today and the local paper to take with you in the lobby.
And there are a few minuses:
The bed is creaky. I thought it might be a mattress set on a wood platform, but no, there was a box spring. It’s not a high quality mattress.
The amenities in the bathroom are skimpy, if that matters to you. Only one small bar of soap and one bottle of shampoo/​conditioner.
The rooms are not at all soundproof. There was lots of noise from people in the hallway, including housekeeping knocking on every door in the morning. Don’t plan on sleeping late. And I could hear people talking in normal voices from the room next door.
Overall, I would stay in Microtel again for an overnight stay, but probably not for a multi-​day stay.
