I went to see Dr Barth starting in the spring of 2014 to treat sleep apnea. He first prescribed an in-​home study, and then referred me to an observed PSG at Providence Milwaukie upon receiving the results of the first test. A few months thereafter, I was surprised to receive a letter from my insurance company stating they denied payment for the observed PSG ($ 3971.00 total) as it was medically unnecessary based on the results of the first test. I requested Dr Barth assist with a formal appeal to my insurance company by writing a letter to justify his referral for the PSG. He wrote the letter and sent it off. I requested a copy several weeks later for my record, and found a letter that appeared to have been written by a sixth grader… filled with grammatical errors, punctuation errors, etc. In addition, the essentially read, «sleep apnea is a really serious condition, so I referred him for a PSG.» Of course my insurance company denied the initial appeal, and returned their rejection letter with a thorough explanation of what would justify referral of a PSG. I wrote a letter to Dr Barth and requested that he write a second letter, and cite specific reasons within my insurance company’s coverage policy to justify why the PSG was required. Again, he came back with another, «golly, sleep apnea is really serious» letter. DENIED. As I continued to fight this ruling, I was lucky enough to find a phone number that I could have my physician call to discuss my claim with a Medical Director at my insurance company… thinking maybe Dr Barth was better over the phone than he was in writing. I am writing this today, as I have just found out that Dr Barth refused to call my insurance company, claiming that he’s already done all he can for me. So I’m out nearly $ 4K because I chose the wrong doctor, and there’s nothing I can do about it. Do your homework. Avoid Dr Barth at all costs… and if you drive by his office and see some guy sitting on the sidewalk waiving a sign that says «DR BARTH = BAD DOCTOR» be sure to honk and waive to me as you drive by.
