Compassionate Care is dedicated to providing peaceful cat and dog euthanasia 24⁄7 in the privacy and stress-​free environment of home for pets in the Portland & Salem, OR, and Vancouver, WA, and outlying areas. We have earned a reputation for professional & personal attention, & a gentle yet experienced touch with a caring hand, which is crucial at such a difficult time for pet owners and their beloved pets.

We can also provide aftercare counseling and assistance, including transport to our pet crematory for private or communal pet cremation service if desired. We personally handle each pet with the same loving and meticulous care for which we are well-​known during the entire end of life process, so each family can be assured that their pet’s cremated remains are their own.

Because we recognize the need for our service may arise at any time, we are committed to being available, dependable, and responsive when we are needed most. Same day, short-​notice and emergency requests typically can be accommodated. Our phone is answered personally day and night, and in the unusual event that a callback is required, all calls are returned very promptly.

Established in 2009.

Dr. Gibson began Compassionate Care because she recognized the great need for a full-​time 24⁄7 home pet euthanasia service. Our mission is to guide and support families while providing peaceful pet euthanasia in the comfort and privacy of the home environment. Because we recognize the need for our service may arise at any time, we are committed to being available, dependable and responsive when we are needed most.

Because we have provided 24⁄7 home pet euthanasia in the Portland and Vancouver areas since early 2009, we are the longest established, most recommended veterinary service of its kind. Having helped thousands of families over the years, we have the most experience for a service that requires extraordinary empathy, intuition and skill.

Dr. Lori Gibson received her undergraduate education at the University of Portland, Portland, OR, and her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Corvallis, OR, in partnership with Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Pullman, WA, in 1999.

She began her veterinary career as an Associate Veterinarian working with small animals at a clinic in West Linn. Dr. Gibson began Compassionate Care because she recognized the great need for a full-​time home euthanasia service available by appointment or on an emergency basis, and dedicated to pet owners and their companions.

Dr. Gibson has a current license to practice veterinary medicine in Oregon and Washington. She also currently serves the veterinary community as an Executive Board Member of the Portland Veterinary Medical Association.

When the time came for my wife and I to put down our beloved chihuahua Pepe, I am very thankful Compassionate Care was available. They were very helpful, sensitive and informative on the phone, and when we had to move our appointment up about 10 hours they didn’t make me feel like it was a bother to them to do so (even though I imagine it’s tough to run a business when people need to change appointments last-​minute like that.)
The vet who came to our house, Dr. Amelie Hatfield, was nothing short of awesome. Very kind, compassionate and a warm presence. She helped make the best of what was a very emotionally draining experience. I’m very thankful we were able to send Pepe on his way in his own home, with a knowledgeable and understanding doctor by his side.
As for pricing, it was actually a little less than I would have anticipated. And certainly worth every penny to let our boy leave this world with dignity in the comfort of his own home. I have no reservations whatsoever in recommending Compassionate Care in the unfortunate event you need their services. Wish I had known about them when one of our Maine Coons, «Amsterdam», passed away a few years ago.

If you are looking at this review, then I guess you are dealing with the imminent loss of a companion and friend, as I was when I started looking at reviews. I can tell you with complete honesty and sincerity that your companion and your family would be well served by using this service.
My wife and I are both nurses, so we have some familiarity (on our best days) with being completely professional while also being authentically compassionate to our patients. Dr. Hatfield, the vet who came to our house, exemplified those traits. She was present but not intrusive. I felt comfortable completely breaking down in tears in front of her after my friend Shyla passed on (and I am a typical emotionally stunted male when it comes to crying in front of others). She gave us an appropriate amount of time to ourselves the euthanasia, before we carried Shyla out to her van on a stretcher.
I hope this helps you in a difficult time.

Disclaimer: I have not used their services, rather I am speaking on behalf of a large group of people who have.
I work in Animal Care, and as a matter of fact, I work for an organization that offers end of life services for animals. We do not, however, offer in home, owner present euthanasia.
For this reason, when someone is looking for it, I suggest Compassionate Care, after all of the stories I have gotten, including those who have worked alongside me, who have used their services.
They come to your home, spend time with you, address the emotional aspects and ensure that everything is as perfect as it can be for one of the toughest decisions you will ever make.
The job they do is incredibly difficult, and carrying the weight of the job and the emotions of their beloved clients is no easy task. They deserve cookies and flowers and hugs and the trust of all who take part in their services.
It is more expensive than some other services, but you get more than you get anywhere.
An in home experience where you get to be with your little one in the very end if so reassuring. You control so much of the surroundings.
This may not be the best option for everyone, and no one should feel bad if they choose another route. I’ve met many who need that in home experience, and some who prefer to not be present. But for those who are searching for an in home experience, this is who you want to choose.
This is a hard time for anyone, and if this is how you envision your last moments, in a quiet, calming, supportive home environment, this is a great place to start.
I’ve heard from every single person I know and have spoken to who has used it, they’ve all said «It is well worth the cost.»
Thank you for loving not only the animals, but the people in their tough time. I know how hard this is for you as a job, but I do believe you’ve found your calling.

This was the hardest decision we have ever had to make. Our 14 ½ yr old golden retriever finally made it clear she was not as happy and care free as she used to be. She was falling and had started losing control of her bladder. Playing ball had long since been within her ability. she still struggled to greet us with a toy but she was very slow in doing so. Our call to Dignified Pet Services was done with tears in our eyes. The gal on the other end was very compassionate and patient. She made a couple calls and connected us with Dr. Erika Lapanovich at Compassionate Care. Dr. Lapanovich and her tech assistant was patient and very kind in talking us through every step. She gave us all the time we needed. This is not an event anyone wants to go through but they gave us great comfort in seeing our beautiful girl moving to a more peaceful place. I can’t say enough about how wonderful these folks are. I had been dreading this day for ages. But from the moment I answered the quiet knock on the door, and met Dr. Meg, I felt calm. Our 15+ year old shepherd mix used to spend a lot of time in between my dh and me on our couch, and that is where we had been loving on Sadie for the couple of hours leading up to the appointment. Dr. Meg obviously sensed that this was Sadie’s peaceful place, and automatically made it her plan to send Sadie off right there. I had thought we’d have to move to the floor. Dr. Meg spent a bit of time letting Sadie sniff her hand, and lovingly stroked our pup. Sadie was completely comfortable with her the whole time. The procedure was painless – Sadie never even acknowledged that the first needle went in – and it was blessedly quick and above all, peaceful. Sadie literally just went from the relaxed state she’d been in while we’d been petting her and telling her everything we loved about her, to a state of complete stillness and peace from the narcotic/​sedative mix, and a few minutes later, with the second injection, she passed without incident. It could not have gone better in any way. It was exactly what I had wanted – just Sadie drifting into an eternal nap. Thank you, Compassionate Care, for being there for us. Thank you so much.

Saying good bye to one of your family members is heart-​breaking. Having someone there with compassion, kindness, and softness makes it easier. I was terrified of my teens being traumatized but the love the Dr. Shared and support was pure mercy and understanding. Well worth the money to have my baby girls life eased at home in the end. I can’t say enough good things about Compassionate Care and Dr. Beth. They helped turn a day we had been dreading into a peaceful goodbye with our cat of 12 years. Our cat has always been a challenge (had to be sedated to go to the vet), and hates strangers. Dr. Beth worked with us to develop a game plan to keep things as peaceful and safe as possible.

From the first call to the very end when I carried my beloved cat out to Meg’s SUV, we experienced only kindness and compassion. It was well worth the $$.
When I called, the woman on the other end asked whether I was ready today or sometime over the weekend. We were ready that day and were able to schedule an appointment within a few hours.
Meg showed up and explained the procedure and about how long each step would take. She was gentle and kind.
I was able to hold my cat throughout the whole time and continue to say goodbye to him. After she gave him the sedative we waited until our cat was completely ready for the next injection. At that moment, Meg asked if we still wanted to proceed. I imagine that this question might cause some mixed emotions, but I thought it was a great question and afterwards realized that if we weren’t ready we could have said no.
When all was said and done, Meg wrapped him in a blanket and I carried him out to her SUV. For me, that was a wonderful way to have closure.

There just aren’t enough words to thank Compassionate Care properly for the service they provide. After all our furbabies give to us, it’s our final gift to them to be able to say goodbye in an environment that is loving and peaceful. After 15 years of being our best friend, Max was able to pass in his home, in his bed. We were also able to allow our other two dogs to say goodbye to him instead of taking Max from the home, never to be seen again. This review is months late but the gratitude is still fresh. What an amazing group of angels we have among us with Compassionate Care. From the initial phone call to the eventual visit, their compassion for my pet and my family was evident. Dr. Beth was wonderful in her visit to us. Our beloved 12 year old cat, Bingo, was acting normal, but a little bloated, so I took him to the vet to be checked out. Imagine my shock when the vet told me his temperature was already dropping (it was 95.5) and that he was actively dying! An ultrasound revealed cancer, but he hid his illness so well that we were totally blindsided.
Later that same evening, Bingo started to rapidly deteriorate. It was clear that Bingo was letting go, now that the «cat was out of the bag» as it were. I realized we might need the services of Compassionate Care much sooner than I had imagined in my wildest dreams. I sent an email to Lori, but in my distress, managed to give her my work number instead of my cell number. About half an hour later, my home phone rang, and it was Lori. When the number I had given her turned out to be a closed office, she actually tracked me down in the white pages, because she could tell that I needed some guidance. Amazing! I made an appointment for 9am the following day.
Bingo had a somewhat rough night, but come morning, he was laying quite still while our family gathered to stroke him and say goodbyes. When Lori arrived, he was already almost gone, but her presence was so comforting. She was patient and respectful of Bingo and the humans. The process was so gentle and loving. Lori held space for us all during this heart wrenching process. She brought so much peace. Her presence was so calming and serene.
I can not thank Lori and Compassionate Care enough for the important, difficult work they do.

Yesterday was a sad day. Our cat Wilbur left us after 14 years being a part of this family with his love, personality and silliness. However as emotional this all is, the patience, care and support of Doctor Jennifer from Compassionate Care Home Pet Euthanasia Service and their well thought through process, made this a very nice and dignified experience for my wife my two kids and I at our own home. Both their process and the care of Doctor Jennifer created the best circumstance to say goodbye and let Wilbur start his next adventure.

The vet arrived late to the appointed time. My kids and I were very anxious about putting our dog down, so the kids took him for one last walk. When the vet arrived, she made it clear that she was not happy that the dog was not there, going so far as to say «I have other appointments after this». I couldn’t be more offended, we were losing a member of our family and she was worried about her next appointment? Then why didn’t she arrive on time? She did redeem herself when the kids called and said that our dog had fallen down and couldn’t get back up. She went to pick up the dog and the kids in her truck. The rest of the visit went smoothly and she was more compassionate to our feelings. The service is a great idea so your pet can spend his/​her last moments with you in your home instead of the vet’s office.

This service is a blessing. On July 2nd we had to put down our nearly 14 year old beloved golden retriever Bo. We were able to bring him outside on the patio as he loved being outdoors. It was quick and peaceful and he was in familiar surroundings. He was spared a stressful trip to the vet. Dr. Meg took care of him and she was tremendous.

Putting your pet down is obviously one of the shittiest things ever. Compassionate Care is a godsend and makes the whole situation as minimally shitty as possible.
Phone service was extremely kind and explained all options and pricing without any judgment for my cost-​conscious questions.
You can schedule, or call on short notice. Their prices vary a bit– pricing as of April 2015 was ~$ 200 for a weekday appt before 7pm, ~$ 35 addl after 7, and a little more than that on weekends. They also have 3 options for what to do with your pet after– you can keep and bury them, you can have them cremated communally ($ 70 as of 4⁄2015), or have them individually cremated and get the cremains.
Dr. Beth Procassini came to our house on time, and was extremely gentle and kind, soft spoken, and just an entirely lovely person. Their process is to get paperwork/​payment out of the way beforehand, and then she explained the entire procedure to us, and answered a dozen nervous nerdy questions from me.
She gave us time to say goodbye and kind of brace ourselves, and when we were ready she administered the sedative and then the injection that follows. Our cat was dehydrated and she had to try a few times to find a viable vein, and was extremely patient and deliberate, and gentle, through the whole thing.
When it was done, she wrapped Harriet up in a blanket like a bundled baby and carried her out. It is maybe ridiculous– but it meant so much that she was still treated like a pet, and not like a body.
If you have to put a pet down, I can’t think of any better way than to call these guys. They were amazing.

Seriously, there is no easy way to put your beloved pet to sleep. Compassionate Care made it bearable. From beginning to end Amelie Hatcield D.V.M. tended to our dog and she was awesome. We never felt rushed. Caring, loving, totally in tune with our concern and grief. Fees reasonable and worth every cent.

These folks are wonderful. My CRF cat had been failing slowly but she took a turn for the worse late on a Saturday night. It was time to say goodbye to her. They came in just a few hours on a Sunday morning. The vet explained the process and treated my cat like her own. She was patient with me — I was a mess — and kind and gentle to my cat.
I also appreciated them taking my cat to Dignified Pet Services for cremation. They are also a great company to deal with and both of them made the very stressful process less awful. Highly recommended.

These caring vets spare your pet the anxiety of being moved at a most fragile time; they answer any questions and make sure you know the final process that they will perform; they allow as many goodbyes as necessary; they are patient and kind.

The choice to euthanize a beloved pet is never easy. My family and I have lost many pets over the years to old age and illness– and I wish I would have known about at-​home euthanasia.
This was the most caring, compassionate and loving way to say goodbye to our dog.
The doctor gave us all the time we needed, explained each part of the process thoroughly and kindly, performed the procedure on our bed with our other pets present for the sedation period; my mother even joined on Skype from abroad.
After our dog had passed, she treated his body with the upmost respect and gave us as much time as we needed with him before she left.
Compassionate Care actually made this process easier and less heartbreaking, as I know that our dog was not scared, was comfortable in his own home, and was comfortable with a kind and caring doctor I wish every veterinarian could be.
I would recommend this company a million times over when you are faced with the toughest part of loving an animal. The decision that brought me to Compassionate Care was horrible, but I know, in the end, I did right by my dog by using this service and giving him the comfort of his home and family in his final hour.
Rest in peace, my little Chopper Dog; I love you, yes, I do.

I called Compassionate Care at 9:30 pm on 7÷18÷14. Chloe, my 18 ½ old faithful companion kitty had gone in an hour from being comfortable mostly-​sleeping «hospice kitty» to panting, foaming at the mouth, and vomiting. She always got very stressed by visiting the vet, and I’m glad to have had this option of having at-​home euthanasia. Dr. Becky arrived at my home less than an hour later, and was calm and comforting in the face of my panic. She explained the procedure to me, and waited until I was ready. I was able to hold Chloe in my arms as the sedative took, and then Dr. Becky shaved her hind leg for the iv euthanasia. Chloe died peacefully in my arms, and Dr. Becky then brought a pet bed in to transport her to the crematorium.
I’m very appreciative of Dr. Becky’s compassionate and respectful handling of the end of Chloe’s life, and for the quick response late at night so that Chloe’s suffering was minimized. I highly recommend this service to make the best of a sad situation.

It’s been a week and I miss my sweet girl terribly. She was diagnosed just 2 weeks before she succumbed to the aggressive lymphoma.
Noosa, a beautiful australian shepherd blue merle with tan points, joined my family that includes 2 min pins and 2 cats temporarily 2 years ago. Her family decided to move to Hawaii for a 2 years but weren’t able to take her with them.
The decision was made that our girl Noosa was to spend the rest of her time with us happy and loved, how ever long it was going to be. Her time with us was unexpectedly short after her diagnosis. She started showing signs of labored breathing late Thursday evening. We kept watch on her and took her to the emergency vet (read my Dove Lewis review
).
We returned home and she seemed to be able to get a little comfortable and sleep. I worked from home that Friday so that I could spend the day with Noosa. Her breathing did not improve and I had taken her to her vet’s office in the afternoon to get a shot of fast-​acting steroid for palliative care. The steroid shot didn’t seem to help. I was in contact with her family so they were aware of what was going on. We decided that we didn’t want her to be in pain or suffer needlessly. That’s when we made a call to Compassionate Care that evening.
Dr. Jennifer Willey arrived within the time frame they said (which was quick, within the hour). She introduced herself and immediately, I was put at ease. Dr. Willey was very calm and compassionate. I explained to her that I was going to have Noosa’s family in Hawaii on FaceTime so they could say goodbye. She was very accommodating and talked them through very calmly what was going to happen. She assured us that this was the most loving thing we could do for Noosa, especially since we were second guessing our decisions to let her go.
It was so nice to be able to spend the last moments with Noosa in our home instead of at a vet clinic. She got to lay on her bed, surrounded by those who love her, both human and four-​legged. The process was not rushed and we got to spend time saying goodbye.
When it came time for Dr. Willey to transport Noosa, she lovingly tucked her in a soft, clean blanket. We walked out with her and I gave Noosa one last kiss on the head and tucked her in the blanket, as if she was going to sleep for the night like I had many times before.
I really admire the staff at Compassionate Care for providing this type of service in such a caring and compassionate way. It can’t be easy and it is sincerely appreciated what you do for our furry family members and the humans they leave behind. Thank you for all that you do.

It is with a heavy heart that I write this as it can only mean that The Mario has died.
It all seems so sudden; like only yesterday he was a tiny, sassy kitten and the next thing I know it has been 18 wonderful years and now he is painfully ill, and elderly.
I know in my heart that I did everything I could for him. The second visit to the vet really showed me how sick my kitty was. He cried as they have him subcutaneous fluids. He was miserable taking the pills. It took two vet techs to do both. But this was supposed to make him feel better and for longer.
Problem was, when we got him home, he was remarkably worse. He almost couldn’t walk. His walk seemed «drunken.» He could no longer jump up on the futon or get up on the bed. He just looked at me to help him. That is when I knew I had to call
Sobbing, I called The Cat Hospital and told the vet there what was going on with The Mario and she told me what I already knew, and gave the number to Compassionate Care.
When I called that is when it really hit me, that Mario was not going to be with much longer. The gal answering the phone had the patience of a saint as I was trying to talk and cry at the same time. She managed to get all my information and explain the process to me. I had my choice of when I wanted the vet to come. I wanted them to come right away as my Mario’s suffering was killing me.
The vet arrived in an hour and she was so serene and comforting. I immediately felt that she would take good care of my precious Mario and make him comfortable. I had him up on my bed as that was his favorite place. The vet just quietly sat and let me hold Mario and talk to him and waited for me to give her the go-​ahead to begin. The entire process was done on my terms, on my time.
I gave her the permission to administer the final drug and he was gone almost instantly. I just held him and cried. She reached over and closed his little eyes.
The way she treated him afterwards was so touching. She had a little kitty bed. She very carefully picked him up and placed him in the kitty bed as if he was just sleeping then she covered him and took him away.
His ashes will be returned to me in a day or two.
I am thankful for the 18 funny and special years you brought to me Mario. I am thankful I was able to put a dignified, peaceful and loving end to your suffering. I’m thankful for Compassionate Care.

Want to add to the glowing reviews for this service. Yesterday was in fact, the day for our little guy Harry to leave this world after gracing it for 18 years. He was a little Jack Russell.
He had been going downhill for quite some time but seemed to be hanging on. To be honest we probably let him go longer than we should have, but could not justify at the time. So after a recent trip to the coast, we had someone sit our little guy who is I must add amazing! To the point though, our dog sitter recommended this place since we had already decided when it was his time to go we would have him go peacefully at home.
Last night our dog sitter came by to say Goodbye to Harry one last time. We all sat around and shared our funny stories, remembering the good times with the little guy and all the funny antics he would do.
The vet was scheduled to come between 7:30−8. That time waiting for that was one of the most agonizing times. Emily showed up shortly after 8, we all sucked in our breath and said this is IT.
He was so old and so riddled with disease, he was more than ready. As the website indicated, Harry was gone in just a little under an hour. Emily was so helpful and gracious, great bed side manner and helped keep us ease. None of it was easy. It was hard to see him breathe that last breath. My BF carried him to the car in his bed when we said the last final goodbye.
My heart still aches and will for a very long time but Harry had a great life and I want to thank Lori Gibsons office and her services. Having Harry go at home and his last memory was eating some yummy sausage.
Highly recommend, it’s worth every penny. We will get Harry’s ashes back and a little paw print in a baked cookie to keep. I’m bawling as I write this. Not sure if could write this later. Did sooner than later.

Elaine Stephens came to my home in Beaverton to help me and my Ex-​boyfriend put our very old and very much in-​pain kitty to sleep.
It was one of the hardest decisions and experiences I had to deal with and Compassionate Care helped me, help my kitty Myles.
She was professional and caring and when she pronounced him gone, I cried like a baby as she let herself out of the house.
