Tom is AMAZING!!! He’s not kidding when he says «really sharp!» I tested the waters with my 3 chef knives from home. They were perfect. He is a true master of his craft! Since he passed my knife test, I decided to let him sharpen my Thinning Shears (I’m a dog groomer with lots of scissors). This is the first time they have worked like new. No one else in the past 3 years has been able to make them cut like they were just out of the box. I’M IMPRESSED! My only complaint is that he doesn’t do clipper blades, but I will definitely make the trip for my knives and scissors! Thanks Tom!

dropped off about 7 or 8 knives, took over a week, poor job done, not even sure i got the all the same knives back. would never suggest this place

I took my chef knives into Tom about a month ago. I had read all the reviews and was extremely impressed. So I had to try it for myself. Working in a professional kitchen, sometimes your knives may be left out for other employees to openly use them and they won’t treat your knives all well as you would. Needless to say mine need a tune-​up. I took them in and I was blown away. The personal service and care for my knives was great. They hadn’t been this sharp in ages. I was so impressed, I purchased one of his boning knifes he had there and let’s say it works wonder. (Insert cut finger here. Ha ha!)

I love what he did to all of our knives. a1932 chefs knive from a culinary school in Los Angeles… wow!!! will be telling everyone hunters fishermen… just everyday knives in the kitchen… just great… and tom is a great guy… pass the word…

Sharp!
What else needs to be said? Tom invited me into his business after my phone call to him regarding the needs of my employer. We arranged a time where I could stop by and get a feel for his business.
Seven knives and 30 minutes later we were done! Tom was very amicable, knowledgable and ready to talk shop. His experience was evident and welcoming.
One of the nice things is that you can use a credit/​debit card for his services. This helps immensely given the quick pace of our electronic society these days.
Thanks to Tom and his business, I now want an excuse to come back, sit on a stool and talk knives with him.

Tom Veff is *literally* as good as it gets. (and he’s an insanely nice guy too)
I thought I had a sharp knife, but the before/​after comparison of what he did made my old blade seem like a children’s toy. He also made a few recommended modifications to the opening mechanism, thumb studs and blade that, again, made my knife manufacturer look like amateurs. Why aren’t all knives first approved by him before they’re manufactured?!
He’s not just good, he’s the best, probably hands down the best in the country, and he lives right here in Oregon City. I had a great time chatting with him while he sharpened my pocket knife, and learned a crazy amount about blades. It’s clear that he’s passionate about his craft, and not doing it just because it’s a «job.»
As another review said, my knife is so sharp that I won’t touch it with my finger to test it, and all my knives will from now on be sharpened by Tom.

I had a dull SOG navy seal fixed blade knife with a chip on the edge. Found Veff on the internet and drove over after talking to Tom on the phone. For $ 10 and in 10 minutes my 20 year old knife was sharper than when I bought it. Seriously, it’s so sharp that I won’t touch it with my finger to test it. Tom is as good as it gets. All my knives will from now on be sharpened by Tom.

I just wish I would have taken our knives to him sooner. They were in very poor shape– now they are slicing and dicing anything and everything we shove onto a cutting board. Such an AMAZING job on some craptastic knives that I thought were doomed for the garbage cuz not even Goodwill would have taken these junkie knives. Now they work like magic. They slice through thick leather like a hot knife melting through butter. It’s CRAZY!!! I thought Mr. Veff was an extremely nice man as well. He was extremely nice to my son and even autographed a knife that we bought that Mr. Veff, himself designed. He is a HIGHLY SKILLED CRAFTSMAN of this trade. I know where I am taking the rest of our knives! My friend took in a grip of her kitchen knives and he knocked em out– leaving her speechless because of his attention to detail and his crazy sharp edge work… Thanks Mr. Tom Veff… Thanks a super ton. Oh– and thanks for not laughing at my hella lame kitchen knives… WAY-​WAY BETTER THAN BRAND NEW. No JOKE! I can’t say enough good things about this guys work.

I have a set of «high end» knives which I really liked before taking to Tom and Veff Sharpening Service… with a new edge the knives are truly better then they were brand new.
I keep trying to tell people how awesome they are and just resorted to showing them because there are no words!
Word of advice, it’s a small business so call ahead!

First let me say that I personally enjoy sharpening knives and many of my friends think my knives are about as sharp as it gets… Well… there is sharp and there is spooky magic sharp and Mr. Veff falls in the latter category. Not only are the edges he produces sharp enough to make the hair jump right off your arms in fear, but they have a strange burnished, mirror like finish that looks simply wicked.
Talking to this man also gives you an insight into one of those people who have found their calling and not only enjoy what they do, but have turned it into an art form… and all this about as cheap as it comes… I had 4 kitchen knives and a hand made hunting knife done for $ 17.50 and I believe that they came out sharper and prettier looking than they have ever been. It is worth that much just to sit and watch Mr. Veff do what he does and listen to his deep understanding of that perfect edge.
Call ahead and come see what he can do. How often in this world, do we get a chance to see the master of a craft simply and efficiently work magic right before your eyes?

Great service while you wait. Anyone who does any cooking will appreciate a beautifully sharpened knife and this is the place to take your knives that are no longer what they once were. They will be restored to like new (and possibly better) sharpness by a friendly and knowledgeable former butcher in his shop behind his home in Oregon City. All for a very fair price and a friendly disclaimer/​warning (complete with a band aid parting gift) about possible injury now that your knives are finally sharp again.

Mr. Veff runs Veff Sharpening Service out of a shop behind his house off I-​205 in Oregon City. You wouldn’t know it’s there unless you drove past the front of the place, or unless you looked it up in the Yellow Pages. Or, like me, you Unilocal «knife sharpening», and come across 2 stellar 5-​star reviews for what looks to be the most dedicated and technically proficient blade sharpening dude in all the land. Had I seen this in the Yellow pages, I doubt I would have made the call/​drive, but with two positive reviews, I knew I had struck gold.
Mr. Veff has been buying, using, sharpening, and selling knives since he was a very young guy. He worked many years as a journeyman meat cutter, and he has owned Veff Sharpening Service for the past 20 years. He also designs knives for a local manufacturer and came up with a super effective style of serration that he calls his own. But what really matters, is that this guy gets your edges sharp, polished, and ready to slice.
Kitchen knives, blades, shears, chainsaws, you name it. Anything with an edge can be honed down to a convex razor sharp slicing tool. For $ 12.75 I got a 6″ Santoku knife, a 5″ blade, a 5″ serrated knife, and a 5″ paring knife polished to a shiny sharpness (sharp enough to cut belt leather with only a small amount of pressure). It was done while I waited (you need to call ahead for sharpen-​while-​u-​wait service), and in all, it took about 30 minutes.
This is a CASH ONLY establishment that will sharpen your steel or sell you a great knife, all with a friendly and charming smile and a folksy, talkative banter. The 30 minutes I was there seemed like a mere flash in the pan. I left happy and with a free band-​aid (stamped with a disclaimed that he bears no responsibility for any spilled blood).
So if you need just about anything sharpened, make the drive out to Oregon City, bring some cash, and watch a true American master craftsman at work.

Of all the things you can spend money on in this world, few provide such a satisfactory return on investment as having your knives professionally sharpened. I’ve been telling this to my friends for years, and they generally did’t believe me… My wife and I have been going to Tom Veff once a year for three or four years now and couldn’t be happier with his service and dedication to workmanship. We’ve even taken to gathering up our friends knives around Christmas time and having them sharpened as a yearly gift. They believe us now.
As far as cost goes, we take our entire «stable» of knives (about 6 — including one serrated) and it’s usually around $ 25 – 28 total. Money well spent when we consider the use and abuse that these knives go through in our very busy home kitchen.

Let’s talk knife sharpening. Sharp knives are one of the kitchen’s unsung joys. I didn’t care much about knives until I actually got nice knives. That is when I began to ENJOY cooking. My mother bought me 3 Global Knives and the suckers were finger slicing sharp right out of the package. They made me nervous, but I liked it. Fast forward a year and they perform more like butter knives. So, I do a few google searches for professional knife sharpening and find TOM VEFF! Not only does this man knows sharp knives, he is a total treat to meet and chat with. He has all sorts of witty quotes and what-​nots posted about in his very tidy workshop. I learned more about knives in 30 minutes (I waited while he sharpened) than I did in 1 year of Home Ec. in High School. I really want to share all the tid bits right here and now, but I think you should gather up your knives and make the 30 minute trip to Oregon City (it’s so worth it) and find out for yourself. Call ahead if you want to wait while he sharpens or you can drop off in his drop-​box. He does it all, kitchen knives, processor blades, chainsaws, pocket knives, hedge trimmers, scissors (lots more listed on his website)… if it has a blade he will sharpen it. And he will sharpen it sharper than manufacture sharp. I kid you not. As a first time customer, I got a complimentary band-​aid (which I hope I don’t need). Treat yourself and cook with sharp knives!
