We’ve avoided this place for several years following 2 dreadful meals. Decided to try it tonight and it will be another few years(if not forever). From the edamame(cold, no salt, sent back, same on return), to the soft shell crab sushi(cold), to the shrimp topped sushi(rubbery, tasteless) to the spicey tuna(whoa hot), all was awful. Amazingly, the restaurant was crowded. Back to Table 24 for our before or after movie nights.

Unbelievably fresh and delicious sushi. The hamachi was like butter. We also had agadashi tofu and several other fresh large rolls. My husband had a bento box with chicken and NY steak teriyaki and mixed tempura(light delicious sauce). Our meal was finished by the most amazing combination of vanilla ice cream wrapped in a thin layer of sponge cake and flash fried in an amazing batter… then topped with chocolate sauce and cinnamon powder. This place is so amazing. I love that it is in the theater square near by a quaint bookshop and movie theater. So glad we found this gem. Oh, we also loved the hot fresh hand towels at the beginning of the meal.

This place is one of the best sushi places I have ever been to. The dishes are expertly prepared, and the service is friendly and kind. I recommend the deep fried ice cream and teriyaki beef

My advice is don’t trust these bad reviews and go try Serika to see for yourself. THISIS A GOODSUSHIPLACE, PEOPLE. Went there to have lunch with friends and I absolutely loved the food(plus they have a very efficient and nice service, which doesn’t hurt either). I ordered the Chirashi bowl(kind of pricey, BUT you get a ridiculously huge amount of food so I felt it was worth it). It was delicious and the fish was very fresh. YUM! I can’t wait to go back to try their rolls.

Way better than the current Unilocal ranking suggests. On par with solid SF neighborhood sushi places.

My husband and I have been going here since we moved to Orinda 8 months ago so I don’t think we ever experienced the previous ownership that other reviewers mention, but only having been there under the current ownership, we love this place. It’s our go-to sushi restaurant and we go a couple times a month when we want casual/reasonably priced sushi. The food is great(we’re fairly picky about sushi), we love the atmosphere and the staff is friendly.

We had a delicious dinner here just now, although my expectations were low after reading some reviews, I was so impressed! I love the warm hand towels they give you and the service was so wonderful and homey. This restaurant feels like it’s run by a Japanese couple, by the details. We had a few rolls, the hot vegetable udon with tempura and the cod & hamachi kama. The fish was so fresh and perfectly cooked, the tempura batter perfectly crispy, the soup was full of veggies & flavorful broth and everything was subtlety seasoned:). Delicious meal, thank you!

Good service and fresh fish! Spider roll is humongous. Salmon sashimi was on point. I’m definitely coming back.

Atmosphere was great. Only thing I didn’t like was that my friend was served her meal first and was almost half done by the time I got my dinner. Both of our meals did taste great!

I wish this place was where I lived because by far it is the best sushi restaurant I have ever been to. Love it!

This used to be a favorite of mine and when I heard there were new ownership I thought I’d still give it a try. The sushi was mediocre at best, all of the food — appetizers and dinner– came out all at once. Unaki udon was grossly over cooked and after I mentioned it, i still had to ask for it to be taken off or at least discounted. As bad as dinner was the way the owners berated both the waitress and kitchen staff in my presence was unacceptable. I have never made my decision about a restaurant based on one bad dish. But the abusive treatment of the employees will guarantee I will not be a repeat customer.

These people need to be shut down. Huge piece of plastic in my salad and I barely even received an apology from the OWNER. I even stayed to eat my entrée chirashi. About 2 pounds of shitty instant Japanese rice(I’m almost positive on this) and a thin layer of horribly cut fish. 6 pieces of paper thin fish with no variety. I almost have tears for the honor of the previous owners as their long-time decent restaurant is being run into the ground with broken English menus. Run a goddamn spell check. Don’t ever come here. Ever. I warned you.

Formerly owned by a real character, Serika was sold and the restaurant is now CRAPPY! Barely drinkable saki, off-tasting hamachi, poor quality ikura, and bland sake. These people took a kick-ass restaurant and are piloting it toward the ground. Theater Square is known as a tough location for stores and restaurants. Table 24 flourishes by virtue of great food, and Serika has lived a long life, but not for long! I give the new owners another year before the doors close. 2 stars only because their salad dressing is good, as is the miso.

What happened to our beloved Serika? Recent change of ownership — that’s what. As I said in my review a year ago, this is a place our family has really enjoyed in the past. Been regular customers for 10 years, but not anymore. We’ve given the new owners four tries and tonight was the last. We ordered all our favorites: sake, unagi, maguro, saba, hamachi and they were all lacking flavor and the fish was soft –even mushy. The hamachi left a bad taste in the mouth and my wife thought so too. The spider roll was the best dish we ordered and the chicken teriyaki dinner was also pretty good. This was our go to place for sushi and we are all so disappointed it’s not what it once was. Service was never a strong suit here, but it’s worse under the new ownership AND the prices are higher.

Shashimi, shushi, noddles? I’m ruining my autocorrect here. Besides the misspellings, new ownership has the place looking non-professional and 17 dollar tuna Shashimi. I understand high rent of Orinda, but what is that about.

I’ve been to this place several times and the sushi and sashimi are always spot on — very fresh. 4.5 stars for that, hands down. This night however, I would have to knock down the service to 2.5 stars. The waitress was nice but I think they were very slammed that night so we weren’t serviced very quickly. I think they need to hire more waitstaff because we had to wait for just about everything. I ordered the sashimi moriawase and a few ala carte pieces of sushi. Everything was just so good. This is my favorite sushi place on the east bay. Everything is just so darn fresh and flavorful. Hopefully they can get their act together on the prompt service next time.

I visited Serika with my partner for a celebratory dinner with his boss. It was a busy Friday night, but we were able to get a table for four. What I liked about the restaurant is that it is family owned and run. Sue pointed out the father, mother, and sons working in the restaurant. I ordered the sashimi platter that consisted of the maguro, hamachi, and sake. In addition, I ordered the uni and unagi nigiri. When my plate came, I didn’t expect that many pieces of each fish. From the description of the waitress, it sounded like maybe 4 pieces each. But it came with 6 pieces each. It was a lot. All the fish were fresh and tasty. Though I wish the hamachi was more the belly part than the tail. The uni and unagi was also fresh. My only complaints about the restaurant was the service and the selection of fish. I wish they had more different types than the standard, such as ankimo. Our waitress was very slow. I asked her and another waitress several times for a refill of water. After waiting for 20 minutes and no refill, I went to find the water pitcher and refilled my glass myself. A nice restaurant to eat fresh sashimi in Orinda, when I am ever on that side of the mountain.

DONOTORDERTHESHABU. It will be the saddest, most pathetic excuse for shabu you will ever have in your life. Instead of the flavorful, delicious broth offered at places like Zabu Zabu or Shabu House, they just give you water. And instead of all the different tender kobe beef and other meats, mushrooms, veggies, etc that you’d expect, they give you only cabbage and noodles. Instead of folding when boiled, the meat will shrivel up and harden into a tasteless rock. Because it’s not even shabu meat. Yuck. Worst of all, you will use the wooden scoops on the table to scoop some soup into your bowl. The waitresses, who don’t speak English, will come over to your table, take the scoops out of your hands, place them back into holding cup where they were stored, laugh amongst themselves like you don’t know what you’re doing, and then walk away. Then you and your friend will stare confused at each other until you ask them to come back and explain why you’re not supposed to use the scoops. They will look at each other confused, wondering why they have anything to explain, neither of them wanting to actually help you. And then it will cost you $ 30 each. Yeah no thanks… for that much I can get AYCE at Zabu Zabu(YUM) in Berkeley and for $ 20 I can get way more/way better food at Shabu House in Burlingame. And they won’t treat you like a newb.

Met up with a friend to pick up our World Series Champion San Francisco Giants season tickets and have lunch at Barbacoa the Mexican place in the Orinda Theater Center. BUT, they are closed and did not open for lunch, so we settled for Serika. We were seated right away and given the lunch menu. Hot Sake and tea came right after we ordered the Nabeyaki Udon and the New York Steak/Tempura/California Roll Bento. The Nabeyaki Udon came with Tempura on the side but, the soup was very salty. The Bento box was good and the tempura was fried just right. The restaurant was bout ¼ full through out lunch. The service was OK, no refills of water or tea. Total for lunch $ 24.
