Wah Lum Kung Fu Temple

I had signed my family up for Kung fu as a Christmas gift last year. Mainly for exercise for my wife and I and self defense for my daughter. However, after a short period of time I realized another added bonus. At age 22 I was in a car accident that crushed my foot and I had my left heal removed down to the bone and replaced with what is called a free flap from my back. I have spent the last 18 years walking on the front half of my left foot and usually limp after sleeping and have chronic ankle pain. Since actively practicing Kung fu, my balance has tremendously improved as well as my posture has begun to correct itself and I no longer limp when waking in the morning!

I attend school with Sifu Kee but I got to put in a good word for Master Chan and his school since he started it all!
I’ve been attending school through Wah Lum for over 15 years now and I also went to China with Master Chan. I’ve studied some Kung Fu and Tai Chi at the school on Goldenrod but also attended many special sessions for anniversaries and cruises.
I can’t say any thing bad about these schools. They run a tight ship so don’t think you are going to get off easy! You must train hard and take the training seriously. If you think they are going to let you flop around the temple and be lazy well you need to find a different place to be lazy. There is no lazy at Wah Lum!!!
A+ school and Master Chan is the best. I will always thank him for the teachings that he has given me personally and also that privledge of learning at one of his many other schools. I will always think of this style and school as being my home away from home because they treat there students like family.
Oh, did you see that I mentioned cruises? and the trip to China? That’s because every once in a while they get the schools together and they go on trips. During those trips they practice Kung Fu and Tai Chi. My trip to China was amazing and we spent three weeks in China visiting the different schools and temples. The cruises are basic 5, 7 or 10 day cruises but the best thing is that you get to train at Kung Fu at sea! Pretty freaking cool!!!
Check the schedule and find a time when you are able to go by and check things out. Bring your kids to have them check out the kids classes! Find a price plan which works for you and have fun getting in to shape learning traditional Kung Fu and Tai Chi!

We enrolled my 4 year old son in the Pee Wee program at Wah Lum a couple of months ago. The instructors have been so patient and helpful in getting him acclimated to the environment and program. The head instructor is the best at working with young kids and helping them adjust and learn. The positive reinforcement and structure has helped him gain more confidence in doing the exercises with the rest of the class (and even to show off at home). He absolutely loves going and is learning hand/​eye coordination, focus, Kung fu basics and a little bit about traditional Kung fu exercises and background everyday. It’s great to see my son look forward to going to class to learn new things and practice skills he’s learned. We couldn’t be prouder and happier to join such a great school.

Been a student here for nearly a year, and the Wah Lum temple has already become an indispensable part of my life. Beyond the obvious benefits of getting into better shape and gaining a stronger sense of focus, there’s another more intangible element that comes into play which I didn’t expect.
The innermost part of the temple is kept as a sacred space. Students bow before crossing the threshold in either direction, and there’s a dedicated monument to the lineage of the teachings (which stretches back to the ancient Shaolin Temple in China) at the front. To step into the temple is to step into another world — one that connects you to something deep and timeless.
Advancement through the system is not quick, but that’s because the fundamentals are so important. No colored belts here, but there are different levels you can attain through testing.
It’s also a beehive of social activity, with many opportunities to participate in demonstrations, seminars, school celebrations, and Chinese holidays.
Can’t think of any critiques to offer the school, but I will offer one warning to potential students: If you’re not in optimal physical condition when you sign up (I certainly wasn’t), prepare for a few weeks of muscle soreness while your body catches up to the rigorous demands of the system. As you’ll learn — «kung fu» is Chinese for «hard work».

One of the few schools that still teach traditional and authentic martial arts! Not only do you learn how to punch and kick, but intangibles such as discipline, patience, humility, control, and focus. Also, you get exposed to Chinese and Kung Fu culture and customs.

Went here for 5 years, about 10 years ago. Authentic Chinese Kung Fu temple/​school, with very talented and dedicated sifus (teachers). You learn the philosophy, the authentic names for all of the kicks/​hits/​horse stances, and truly learn the basics in self defense, as well as beautiful kung fu forms. The classes are usually an hour, with the first half dedicated to stretching, warm up excercises, and a review of all the stances. The second half hour can be a combination of drills, self defence techniques, cardio, and one-​on-​one teaching of forms depending on the instructor and time alotted. There are NO belts in traditional kung fu, but they do test levels to make sure you are getting the information and give us Americans a sense of accomplishment. The only reason I knock off a star is because the place got so popular, the classes got extremely crowded and there was less attention to the student individually. I believe, talking to friends who have joined up there recently, they have restructured their class schedule, and based payment on how many and which classes you take, so it sounds like it may have allieviated that problem.
