This review is about takeout. Let me set the mood for you. It was a gloomy Sunday which also means a lazy Sunday for me. So I didn’t «officially» get up until 7pm and I was seriously craving a cheesesteak. After a while, I finally mustered up the energy to go outside and go to Penn Station, but to my dismay they had already closed. I was so crushed, then I remembered a place not too far away called Chartroose Caboose that does cheesesteaks. I arrived hoping they were still open and they were! The place was empty, but I figured that’s because its Sunday and normal people cook lol Mary took my order and she was super nice! I definitely commend her on her customer service. As for my order, the super chief, it was okay. Nothing to write home about. It was edible and I’ll prolly be back just to try something else.

I really like Philly Cheesesteaks and this place really failed. The meat was dry, overcooked and flavorless. Generic buns and store bought undercooked fries. Frankly you can get a better philly at the hooters next to them. Sad

Never again. I used to love this place. I have been going there for years, and have never been treated with anything but respect. I have family in from out of town this week and wanted to take them there for lunch. We get there about 2pm today(Thursday). There are only a few people dining, two people waiting for food, and no one behind me. I ordered 3 kids sandwiches, and 3 adult sandwiches. The woman working the register obviously had no idea what she was doing, and she stopped taking my order 3 different times to check on food in the fryer. Her nails were disgustingly long and not well kept, and were very discolored. It took almost 15 minutes for her to take my order.(6 sandwiches). Then I sat down and we waited for our food. After about 15 more minutes, they called that our food was ready, I went up to pick it up and immediately noticed that there was no cheese on one of my kids sandwiches, I told her it was supposed to have cheese and she took it off the tray and handed to to the woman at the grill, who promptly threw a piece of cheese on the bread and handed it back. She didn’t even melt the cheese. Then, I realize that one of my sandwiches has cheese when it wasn’t supposed to, and came with fries instead of onion rings. I tell the woman handing me the food this, and she says«I will need to see your receipt, just to verify». I went to the table and got the receipt and handed it to her, and she proceeded to tell me that onion rings are an upcharge and we didn’t pay for those. I told her that I had ordered the onion rings, and apparently the woman running the register didn’t put it in correctly. She refused to give me onion rings, so one of my family members didn’t get the food they wanted. I told her that for me spending $ 70 on lunch, I wouldn’t think it would be a big deal to change the order to onion rings. She refused and I told her that this lunch outing had become a huge pain in my a$$ and we wouldn’t be returning to spend any of our money in their business. Too bad for them, we go there 2 – 3 times a month and spend $ 50-$ 60 per visit for our family of five. I have a feeling that the owner, who is usually there when we visit, would be sad to know that long time customers are leaving because of the way they are treated.

Hands down awesome. My dad brought me here 25 years ago and it’s still great. This is the best location in the metro.

Yeah, this place seems like it has seen better days. Walking in here and watching the TV that was blaring away in the dining area, I expected to see Dick Vermiel being interviewed about how he feels moving from the Rams to the Chiefs or how it will not be long before ground is broken on the long awaited Power and Light downtown project. I didn’t think the food here was bad as much as it was served in a tired, screaming for renovations environment, and for the fact that it was $ 9 for a mediocre sandwich. I can go and get a well above average lunch at four or five other places I can think of off of the top of my head for $ 9, and I would rate my sandwich here at barely average. Unless you are looking to relive nostalgia from the early 00’s, those halcyon days of WMD’s, Willie Roaf and Quin Snyder, I would definitely pass on the Chartroose Cabooose.

As a girl born and raised in Philly a decent try but not worth eating again. The sandwich was greasy without much seasoning. .even my Midwest husband thought it was bland! I was disappointed):

Had the Super Chief and fries combo! Didn’t think I was going to eat the entire sandwich, but it went down so fast and was so good I was ready for another! Excellent food.

for the price you pay this place just isn’t worth it. The food isn’t bad, but it wasn’t totally awesome. And for how much you pay you’d think they could afford to serve it to you on a real plate with a real glass. And the bread was just the same stuff you find at the store. If they were cheaper I might give a better rating and try it again. I mean the sandwich was $ 7, then they charge another $ 3.50 for fries and a drink. Even with a front flip coupon for 2 people it was $ 19. Just not worth it. It really didn’t have the vibe I was looking for either, it felt like I was in a cheap Chinese place, minus the cheap prices.

This place is terrible. My first time here. Wasn’t expecting much, but it was even worse than I had anticipated. Let’s make this clear — all of the meat is pre-cooked in the morning. When you order a sandwich, they simply scoop the pre-cooked meet onto the grill for a split-second, and then int your sandwich. I ordered a Philly Cheesesteak and a small drink and it was almost $ 10. The taste was way below average. Unless you have no concept of what even an average Philly cheesesteak should taste like, don’t bother with this place. Total waste of money.

What happened to this place? I used to frequent here about a decade ago and it was fantastic. I went in last night to relive some tasty cheesesteak memories and was sadly disappointed. The place was a ghost town and looking run-down. The food has slipped a lot. Not fresh at all. Precooked meat sitting in a tub that’s scooped onto the flattop when you order and bland frozen fries. I’ll stick with my memories.

I called to place a delivery order. A very hard to understand Asian American woman answered the phone and I think she told me to «hold».after while I realized that’s exactly what she said because she laid the phone down and I could still hear everything, including how extremely busy she was because she was working the front counter and it sounded super busy. After 15 min I hung up. One star for not having a separate person to take delivery orders. Management needs to get their act together cause they could have made a lot of money today. This is totally not the obviously overworked Asian American lady’s fault, she was busting her tail working the cash register as I could actually hear it. How about a separate phone line for delivery and someone to take those orders? I still want my Zepher!!!

Ordered with some co-workers today and had it all delivered(a life-saver when you have to work through lunch). As usual, I had the Zephyr(onion, cheese, mushroom) with fries. The sandwich was good as always with an appropriate amount of meat for what you pay for it. The bread was soft and flavorful. The fries were average, but a decent size order for the cost. Overall, it’s a tasty lunch at a decent price. And the staff are always friendly to work with and a speedy delivery makes it a great worktime lunch option.

Of you serve food on a 9 inch roll give them that much steak. If not get smaller rolls. I have has better and I’ve had worse. Ok of you wanna try something new but no wow going on here.

My first time & Not impressed. Overpriced, poor atmosphere & dirty. Some entrepreneur needs to put something in worthy of the real estate location. I also saw bugs on the tables.

When we come here order the Super Chief(Mushrooms, Onions and Peppers) Philly Cheesesteaks. The bread is so super soft its like eating a cloud, and the meat is always tender, hot and juicy. I slather mine in tiger sauce, my husband prefers to eat it plain as he professes you don’t mess with perfection! The fries are good, but nothing spectacular. The décor and service leave a lot to be desired, but the price is right for a meal that will absolutely satisfy hunger & cravings.

Underwhelmed. I don’t exactly know how to put it into words, but there was just something off about eating here. It felt sticky. I wasn’t too impressed with the food. I didn’t even finish my super chief philly cheesesteak because I just felt blah about it. The fries were also blah. Like I said, I don’t know how to put it into words, so if I have to choose one, it’s: apathetic.

I get that it’s not totally authentic, but I know I’m not at Pat’s ordering a whiz wit. I thought that my Zephyr(onions & mushrooms… don’t give me peppers) was juicy without being overly greasy, seasoning was savory & good, and the sandwich was HUGE. Great value for under ten bucks. Service was quick despite the lunch crowd, and tables bussed & cleaned quickly so you have a decent shot at finding a seat.

This place used to be better than it is now, not sure quite what happened. There is still good flavor in the beef for the Philly’s, but they are loaded with grease. The grease was so bad that the bottom of the bun was soaked through within a few minutes of me getting my sandwich. Overall, good flavor in the sandwiches, but the staff doesn’t represent anything you’d imagine for serving Philly steak sandwiches. Most are hispanic and are short order cooks. This is a decent place for hangover food, but probably no longer a destination spot.

The Caboose is probably the best example of a Philly Cheesesteak in KC… They’re not a perfect representation but they are pretty good. I worked on a long project in Philly so I know all about Jim’s steaks, Geno’s and Pat’s. Those places are really good but I’m not a fan of the Cheese Whiz that comes with the standard issue at Pat’s… The Caboose utilizes Provolone on their steaks which I vastly prefer to Cheeze Whiz. I actually prefer the Chicken instead of the Steak at the Caboose which probably indicates that these are not the most authentic sandwiches. That said, the Caboose gets crazy crowded over lunch so show up early. A Philly, fries and a drink will run you ~$ 10… Not a bad deal for a tasty lunch…

I had the Santa Fe(peppers and onions) option. I thought it lacked seasoning and was too greasy. Maybe the grease was really supposed to be fat which in turn was seasoning? I don’t know but I slatherd on their«Tiger Sauce» which is a horseradish sauce very, very similar to Arby’s Horsy sauce to give my sandwich some flavor. The restaurant itself is clean, the counter service was fast and there is plenty of seating. But, the entire time I was thinking of another local restaurants Philly and wishing I was there instead.
