Hook’s Landing

Great Captain and crew on board the Coroloma! The Captain got us on top of the fish very fast and the deckhands made sure everyone was rigged up and well taken care of at all times. «Punky» in the galley made sure my daughters were well taken care of and even crafted up a cool hook ornament for them. Thanks for the great trip, you guys went above and beyond!

Hooks landing is the best. The crew of the coroloma is one of the friendliest and offers me the best service. I have fished at every landing and i look forward to spending time here because i feel so welcome. They work hard to put you on fish and will even bust the banannas off the boat. That is committment i love and i highly recommend anyone that is interested in going fishing to come here. You will have a good time. as always i really enjoyed this trip and even caught 2 big sheephead! tight lines and see you out there

Went out on the ¾ day on the Coroloma. Hook’s Landing has it going on. The NEW management has changed things over the years. I was very impressed. We got onboard and were greeted by the crew. I’ve been fishing for over 20 years and I’ve never been greeted like that. Then I noticed, the boat was being run by a family. I was amazed. They were awesome. Dawn was one of the deck hands, she was very good assisting the anglers. Punky kills it in the galley. Best breakfast Burrito and double cheese burger. They both remembered my name throughout the trip. Fishing was good, but the fish were small in quality. We caught too many fish tacos. It’s so tough fishing inside of Anacapa. It was a good trip and I will go out with them again. I highly recommend Hook’s Landing and the Coroloma.

Took the harbor cruise for the 4^th of july fireworks display. The $ 20.00 for adults and $ 10.00 for kids charge was a great deal compared to other los angeles, orange and ventura county harbor cruises for that day. The crew was so nice in fact we did not take off till 7:30 when the ticket stated 7pm departure from the marina. Turned out there were people who were late and they decided to wait for them. Ten minutes after we started cruising the harbor there was an announcement that we are turning back to pick up more late comers. People started getting upset. First 30 minutes behind schedule and then go back to pick up 3 more who are now 45 minutes late. The sun was almost down the horizon. We missed the sunset and nobody was in the mood at that time. There was no apology to the passengers who was considerate enough to arrive on time. It was chilly so glad we bundled up complete with hoodies and beanies. The boat stopped at the middle of the harbor to wait for the fireworks display. The kids like the experience of watching it from the boat. After the pyrotechics display the passengers were still grumpy about the delay earlier. And who can blame them?

Went out today with my buddies for the first time, the deck hand Steven was super nice to us, and on point with getting us set up to catch fish. The captain Steve was very nice and easy to talk to… no captain Ron here lol. The other deck hand lady very helpful too, and the famous Punky was Killin it on the grill. Definitely will be back again, we all hit our limit today.

Went out today on the Caroloma. When we were motoring out of the harbor, our captain gave us his «gameplan» on getting us fish. He also explained and talked us through every stop we made. He told us the depth, where the fish were, which side to fish and how to rig tor them. We caught some baitfish and after some unsuccessful attempts at quality rockfish, we went to try for lingcod. To make a long story short… we caught some nice lings and everyone had a great trip. I recommend this boat AND crew to everyone. I have had bad experiences at Cisco’s and Ventura landings over the last two weeks and will NEVER go with either of them. HOOKS… hooked me. I’d like to add that somebody brought a banana on board and as soon as he was convinced to throw it overboard… BAM. BOOM… HOOK UP!!! See you guys next week.

We were out Sat April 11^th on the ¾ day, and our whole crew had a blast… Couldn’t have asked for a better crew. Chris was our Captain, this guy was rad. Bobby, Chad, and Justin were the crew… Safe to say these guys have a lot of patience. Never stopped helping us out with tangles/​rebaiting/​advice/​etc and all with great attitudes. Such a great day. Justin was the best helped us out the whole time hope we get the same crew again. Thanks guys!

This boat and its shipmates are nice and the food was good and the fishing was great. If you have kids that don’t like smelling smoke and bad words flying everywhere by everyone this is prob not the boat for you. I hate fishing now because I have tried it like 5 times and I get sick everytime, but I still had fun on this boat!

+ New Hustler crew are hardworking and helpful. Five stars to them. Limits of rockfish and lingcod on my rockfish trip. Got a yellowfin tuna on the recent very rare tuna trip. Unfortunately they gave all the otherwise unwanted tuna heads and the head from my filleted tuna I requested to someone else. I got my bag of tuna steaks and yellowtail so it’s not a big deal. Just disappointing for some Asians back home to miss out on those tuna heads.

Very disappointed in my experience with Hooks. I reserved spots for my son and I on an overnight trip leaving at 10PM. We spent the day preparing for the trip, buying stuff we needed, planning out all the details, talking about what to expect, all the things that makes a 10 year old very excited about his first big fishing trip. The drive to the Harbor is an hour from our house. We got there at 9PM. Aside from all the excitement, there was a LOT of logistics to sort out to make the trip work on our schedule. But when we arrived the guy at the desk said we were not on the list and they had booked the boat full so there was no way we could go. After some complaining, he found our names on a list for the following day, which was NOT what we had booked. No accommodations were offered, barely even an apology. Just some excuse about the guy who took the reservation being new and inept. I had even talked to two different people when I made my reservation. They knew we were coming out today. None of that mattered, we were just sent away.
Through the heavy cloud of disappointment on the long drive home my son and I talked about how a company with integrity would have handled the situation differently. We talked about what a negative effect it has on a business when customers are treated poorly. Didn’t make up for anything, but gave us something to talk about. I promised him I would book another trip with a better company. I will never use Hooks for anything again. I will never recommend them to anyone.

Caraloma trip today was a big disappointment. The captain was rude and inexperienced. Wasted a lot of time looking for barracuda and the group we went with all pretty much went home with empty bags. The best thing about this trip was punky for sure. She was very helpful and friendly, just too bad it hasn’t rubbed on the crew.
We came from Orange County looking forward to trying out a new spot and this just wasn’t worth the time or money spent.

I LOVE MY JOB. Working on the Coroloma as the Galley Girl, is my passion! I absolutely love serving our passengers and do my best to make sure they have a wonderful trip. When some of them get sea sick, I make them my focus to get them feeling better, so that they can enjoy the trip they payed for… Not a lot of people can say they are excited to wake up early to have to go the work. But this Coroloma Galley Girl does!!! … PUNKY

This was my second attemp at trying to go fishing on the Coroloma and both times was given excuses as to why the boat was not going to go out. The first time not enough people which was understandable because it was a last minute thing. The second time I made reservations for 5−31−14 a month before, I took a day off of my job and then on 05−30−14 received a call at about 430pm saying that the boat was having mechanical problems and because it was late in the day and with limited availability on parts, the Coroloma will not be going out (sounds good). Never once did I get an apology, no discount on any future trip just the trip is being cancelled.
Imagine how it feels when you look at the fish report to find out that the Coroloma went out with 23 anglers. I have come to the conclusion that the Coroloma is a bunch of liars and they want to pick and choose who they take. It sucks that people plan well in advance to go on these trips and that Coroloma has no regard for what people do just to go fishing. Your customer service is horrible and lacking a good business ethic. I’ll end this review by saying this to anyone that is interested if you are thinking about going fishing on this boat don’t they probably will cancel. There are plenty of other boats that are great like Channel Islands sport fishing Oxnard sport fishing Ventura Sportfishing.
To the Coroloma I’ll close by saying this
People choose to do business with you because they want to, not because they have to. We can always find others that are doing the same thing offer a similar product. It’s the personal connection that makes the difference.

The New Hustler leaves at 2am, fishing the outer Channel Islands. The early departure allows plenty of fishing time at spots not fished by the ½ day and ¾ day boats. The full day boat is limited to 24 mostly happy anglers. A few of my fellow anglers suffered from sea sickness as the winds were not kind.
Quality lingcod, snapper and various rock fish was caught by most. Crew takes care of your catch and can fillet, scale, or gill n gut. I choose fillets, which are immediately ready for flour, egg and panko.
Today’s deckhands Tanner and Dustin were pretty quick in detangling and tossing fish in numbered gunny sacks.
Captain stayed out until 7pm — schedule is 6pm. I appreciated the extra hour fishing or maybe it was that we were fighting the current when coming in. Either way, the trip scratched that fishing itch.
Pro-​tip: I used to get sick every trip out. Tried Dramamine, the scopolamine patch, and even electronic gizmos with no success. Bonine worked miracles and renewed my love of fishing in the open waters.

My cousin and I have been going out on the Coroloma out of Hook’s Landing for years. I’m surprised I didn’t already have a review of them on Unilocal.If I had one, yesterday’s trip would make me change it. It’s no exaggeration to say we’ve spent THOUSANDS of dollars at Hook’s Landing and we will no longer be returning.
We’ve had trips cancelled due to insufficient reservations or bad weather, great days fishing and some not so much, and some great crews, some just good. Towards the end of last summer, Captain Chris, went to another boat, and a young buck named Marshall took over the Coroloma. Our only trip with him last year had a crew that was just OK, and we thought that the good mates we had dealt with in the past had gone to the new boat with Chris.
We learned yesterday that Marshall and mates, Jeff and James, were a new low. Jeff and James clearly took their lead from Marshall, as all three of them had an air of superiority, and even when attempting to joke, they were borderline abusive. One of our guys asked Jeff to tie on a new leader. We provided the line, and Jeff tied it on. Minutes later, the entire leader detached 280 feet underwater. When we showed it to Jeff, he said, «it’s not my fault!» If the line had snapped (as they can do when caught on the bottom), it still wouldn’t have been an appropriate response. James was better, but was surly and clearly unhappy with his co-​workers.
Once on the boat, you’re assigned a numbered burlap sack they keep your fish in. We bought burlap sacks from the store the first time we went on the boat, and those two sacks have been rolled up in our tackle box for YEARS. We’ve always used sacks that were already on the boat, and which the crew wash and reuse at the end of every trip. Yesterday, I was told that the burlap sack to hold my fish was $ 2. Pardon? When I said we already had sacks and haven’t used them in the YEARS we’d been getting on this boat, I was told to go get them and they’d trade them out. If the cost of the trip had gone up from $ 65 to $ 67 this year, I’d accept it. To extort an extra $ 2 per head once we’re on the boat for a bag that’s likely been in use on the boat for years is just bad business and instantly put a foul taste in our mouths.
Each trip has had a «biggest fish» pool — a good-​natured competition where the heaviest fish wins the pot. They announced so many rules about the pool that it sucked a lot of the fun out of it. Either the captain was making the announcement preventatively, in which case it’s a bad choice, or the clientele has changed and he’s had to add the announcement. Either one is a reason to stay away.
At one point, Marshall came to resolve a tangle. First he said, «gimme that — you’re not qualified,» then he cut the sinker off and put it in his pocket. When re-​rigging a minute later, he asked for a sinker, then offered to sell us one for $ 5. When told it was in his pocket, he tried to make a joke about it, but joking about extortion ain’t funny.
Either something was wrong with the engine (stay away) or Marshall was trying to save money on gas — we spent twice as long travelling in each direction as we have in prior trips — we puttered out, puttered between drops, then quit early so we could spend 2 hours puttering back — a trip we’ve made in 50 minutes in the past.
The crew is clearly unaware that they’re in a service-​based industry. Their attitudes were arrogant, money-​grubbing and cranky, and not at all fun. At the end of the day, someone was just napping as we headed back to port and hadn’t yet paid for his fish cleaning. Instead of having a small working knowledge of who the customers were on the boat, Jeff walked around yelling, «who’s number 17? Diecisiete! Someone owes me ten bucks!!» Repeatedly. When we paid for our fish we tipped them, and didn’t even get a «thank you.»
Punky, the lady in charge of the galley, was the exception — she had a great attitude, made good food and even walked the boat like a cocktail waitress to make sure we had everything we needed from the galley and could get more without having to stop fishing. Above and beyond! Great job, Punky!
I made sure to get our used, $ 2 burlap sacks before leaving.

I can’t tell you how much fun I had on our charter. We chartered the new bluefin out of Capt. Hooks. The fishing was so but we had a great time anyway!
The crew was great and very attentive to our needs. Once the trip ended the staff at the Landing even help us with our gear out to the parking lot!
You should definitely give the landing a try!

My mom and I have been fishing with these guys for years! The captain and the crew are amazing and they are super friendly and very helpful. We go out on the new hustler now and we always have an amazing time! When we went out sunday we caught a crazy amount of fish, including a lot of very large lingcod! Captain chris knows what he’s doing and where the best spots are to catch a lot of fish. Go out and fish with them, you’re guaranteed to have a blast! :D

My girl friend and I have tried 3 times to setup and trip with them. Reservations were made, but they cancelled on us on the day of the trip. WTF
They made excuses like, the boat changed it’s trip to something else, or the weather is bad.
For you Groupon buyers, Hook’s ignores groupon customers. They ruined 3 weekends for us. We’ve given up on trying.

Unlike some other reviewers, I had the absolute best fishing experience on the New Bluefin in early December. We did another groupon fishing boat in Newport, and there the staff made us feel stupid for being non-​professional, were not helpful, and overcrowded the boat.
The experience with Hook’s Landing on the New Bluefin was the exact opposite – it was PERFECT. The crew were genuinely kind and caring people, doing what they love, and helping newbies like me and my friends come to really appreciate deep sea fishing. I’d never caught a fish in my life before today (and I’ve gone fishing a decent amount), and with the crew’s help, I caught 8!!! That’s ridiculous! And they were big! Each of my friends went home with at least 7 fish, as did everyone else on our boat.
The boat itself was nice. The galley was a little small, but it kept us outside enjoying the ocean air and perfect day, rather than sitting inside. There’s a little rest area below as well, and a toilet on deck. Perfectly good accomodations.
Like I mentioned before, the crew just ROCKS! Everyone was so helpful, so genuine, and so awesome! I really felt like I learned a lot about fishing and just had the time of my life. Each of my friends, who also was on a groupon, vowed we would totally come back full price, it was so fun!
The food was very good. Bacon cheeseburgers made to order, sausage breakfast burritos, egg and ham sandwiches, all cooked on a tiny camping grill! This is serious stuff! And the coffee! Man, it’s just instant coffee, but that coffe made our day!
Rods are good, better than others we’ve tried at different places. And best part, they will filet the fish for you for $ 1/​fish. So instead of going home with a freezer full of fish you wont know what to do with, you get perfectly filetted, fresh, self-​caught fish ready to butter up and pan fry into deliciousness!
This day seriously could not have gotten any better! Will definitely be back. Tip: Bring cash for tips for the crew (they bust a$$ for you!), food purchases, and fish filleting.
