Borg’s Ocean Front Motel

Stayed here last weekend with my lady friend and was pleasantly suprised with the VERY CLEAN room and superb view.
It is an older facility which suited us fine, there is a million dollar view from some of the rooms with a community porch and chairs perfect to have a glass of wine and snacks while watching the ocean.
Coffee is at the front desk each AM, you may want to take a small extention cord and a 2 prong to 3 prong adapter as the electrical outlets are the old style 2 prong and not near the front table to plug in your electronics.
T.V. and WI-​Fi are exellent.

Go for one of the «expensive» 2^nd floor ocean view rooms. My wife and I have been returning to Borg’s for some 14 years, and have always enjoyed our time there. You can’t beat the ocean view, literally right across the street — spectacular, especially the sounds of the waves at night! Plenty of free parking. An easy walk to the Aquarium, and only yards away from Lovers Point Park.
Hey, if you’re the kind of person that enjoys white turkish robes handing in the bathroom for your complementary use, or turndown service with mints on your pillows — BORG’S IS NOT FOR YOU! Borg’s doesn’t pretend to be what it’s not — luxurious. Borg’s is no frills and makes no excuses about it. But if you appreciate a beautiful location, clean and comfortable accommodations at a tremendous value, all with an incredibly friendly staff (Frank), you’ll be returning year after year, just like my wife and I do, and quite frankly, just about everyone that stays at Borg’s are return guests — that should say it all.

The best location! Rooms are reasonably priced. They seriously need to update their beds and bedding. That’s pretty gross. Bring your own. It’s not that hard to go to ikea for duvets, Borgs!
If we had known there would be a marathon at 6:45am right outside our paper thin window on both Saturday and Sunday, we would’ve stayed somewhere else. Management should have told us about the marathon (blaring microphone and music).

We stayed at Borgs for the weekend and it was really fun. Great location for people watching from the hotel. Direct walk to the Lover’s Point Beach. About a mile walk to the Aquarium and all the restaurants and bars. Great Views from the Hotel, Bring binoculars you can see tons of see life out in the water.
The rooms were clean and service seemed really good. Free coffee every morning and the staff was very nice. Great parking very safe and quick access to vehicles. The price was also very good.
I did not see AC in the room, but we didn’t need it at all, nor did we need heat for that matter. The only negative thing I’d say would be the traffic noise. This road gets busy, so be prepared for that. At night it was quiet, but starting at 730am cars are going by.
I’d stay there again, especially during Monterey auto week to watch all the classic cars.

Was there last weekend for the Blue Water Weekend in Monterey for John Denver. Got there on Friday the 16^th. Most places I have stayed, I have forgotten my tooth past and when you call the desk to get a courtesy tooth past but this place said that they don’t have any nor give any out. $ 140.00 a night? I have been to all kinds of places and they have it. I have paid less than that. The morning food? Tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Nothing else. Sad for the price you pay to stay.
Room looked OK (no view where the room was but OK about it) when I got in but the bed was so hard, I got up Saturday morning and my back was hurting, not happy about that but only there for 2 nights. Went out Saturday and that night we had the event and after it was over, I walked into the room and turned on the lights and there was ants all over the dresser. I called the desk and he said «did you leave food in there?» I said no, I have no food and then he said, «I have bug spray but is will smell» (I guess he just wanted me to stay in the room with it spray smell) I didn’t say anything and thought the guy would say «I have another room I can put you in» but no, I had to ask «do you have another room I can move to? He said, let me check… about 30 sec later he comes back and says yes, I do have another room. I thought OK he will move me, nope, he said «do you want a room with the smell or the other room». What the… I could not believe he was giving me a choice and not saying let me get you into another room. He was reluctant to even giving me another room.
Let’s say I have been coming to pacific Grove and have always wanted to stay here but wish I have never stayed there after this. I got better service at Motel 6. The other room was better and with a widow view but at night, don’t see anything.
Then Sunday, I go to edit photos to send out to my website and nothing. The power was off. When I walked into the office and they say that the power is off clear to Big Sur. Then was worried about the phone is not working and not getting calls about the reservation not coming in. All she could say is I’m sorry there is nothing I can do about the power. I understand that. Did not seem to be concerned about the customers, just the phones.
If I could do a — 5, I would.

Good for the price and beautiful view, I’m just not used to having no refrigerator, microwave. Be sure you bring everything you need to get ready. Less than 200.00 a nite is a + the view is what makes this place! I GIVE FIVE STARS FOR THE VIEW!!!

During summer there rooms are hot. Theres no air circulation so prepare to sweat. No a/​c or fans in room. You can here all the noise from every person to the left, right, and above you. Even a person coughing u can here. But more conserning During my stay we heard a scratching in the wall facing the street that seemed to move around from inside of wall. Not sure what it was but a mouse or worse crossed my mind. Hopefully it was nothing like that…
When we ran the water from the sink it looked fine. But i got thirsty at night and put water in a cup and the water came out cream color. So nkt sure whats up with there pipes.
The plus to hotel is the closeness to lovers point

The view and location are fantastic. But this is a very old Motel. Very thin walls so you can hear your neighbors. The Bathroom is tiny. You get what you pay for.

Stayed here for the Double Road Race in May. Decent and clean motel…15 feet from the ocean, ten minutes from the aquarium and right on the 17 mile drive. Also six minutes from Monterey wharf. It was basic but nice. Desk clerk had good sense of humor. Would stay again!

Staff is friendly. Rooms are super clean. Can’t beat the view for the price!
Only downside is walls are thin.

You get what you paid for. Building is old you try to sleep in and hear the people next door talking. We heard the people on top of us walking closing doors ect. We stayed in front room of the ocean it was to noisy all the cars going by.
Will not be back.

Excellent views of the ocean on second floor. Rooms are small, and a bit outdated, but a clean place to sleep right by the ocean. Good value. Bathroom is tiny, but clean.

You simply can’t beat the view that this place has. If you’re looking for some place brand new, well this may not be what you’re looking for… but if you want to stay somewhere that’s clean, comfortable and quiet with an unbeatable view, then you should definitely check this place out… You know what people say, its all about location, location, location :-) Borges is always the place where I stay whenever I’m in town!!!

I agree, this place is really old and outdated and they at least need to start with changing out the carpets, but it’s fairly clean. Just looks really old. Then they need to change out the heating system and then furniture.
The manager I believe, didn’t catch his name, is really sweet and friendly. He’s got a good memory too!
This motel offers complimentary coffee, coco and tea from 8 – 10. It also offers wifi, and cable and radio. I think it’s weird there aren’t any clocks around. Maybe people kept stealing them?
The walls here are paper thin. So you can hear… EVERYTHING. Also, I believe closets are connected to a different room. Kinda creeps me out. I also wish they provided breakfast. Can’t have it all.
Other than that, nothing could beat the view. Will come back.

Yes the location is absolutely lovely but that’s the ONLY positive.
I mean seriously this hands down is the crappiest room we’ve ever stayed in.
Totally 70s. And what is supposed to be a 2 room family suite is really 2 tiny rooms with a bathroom literally the size of a cruise ship bathroom .Don’t come with a husband who is looking forward to a little Monday night football because the TV is also from the 70s ok maybe 80s but come on Borgs can’t you even splurge and go to Walmart get some cheap flat screen to replace this dinosaur of a tv.
The room was giving me anxiety because it smelled like a hospital room. Blanket had a hole in it that looked like a cigarette burn. just not ok. We were going to just leave but our son was thrilled to have his own room and didn’t want to go.
Yes for the location they claim the price of 100+is far cheaper than anything else so close to the water. Probably true, but, I think pitching a tent on the beach is probably a better option.
Also no continental breakfast no microwave/​fridge/​coffee maker…
But yes the view is nice!

I have stayed here several times (2002, 2004, 2013). The price here is extremely reasonable for the location. It is located right across from Lover’s Point, and is walking distance into Pacific Grove Downtown, Cannery Rows, and the Aquarium. The view is beautiful.
As for the room itself, there is nothing spectacular about it, however, the location and the view make up for it.

This is a 50s style motel (not from outer space as the name might sound like to StarWars fans) — its very basic and clean, but has no frills or amenities — very basic. But the location, location, location at Lovers Point is spectacular — if you get a ocean side room on the 2^nd floor, you can see the sea otters so close that its almost like your dog in the yard through your window in the morning. Following than perhaps walk along the coast to the Monterey Bay Aquarium or further west along the coast on a nature walk. Then in the evening, sip a glass of wine on the baloney outside your door and watch the sunset. I frequently see deer along the walk to the Aquarium and one time in the Borg parking lot I hand feed carrots I had to young deer with their mom.
The cost is high for a 50s place, but cheap by Monterey Bay standards.
I stay there with colleagues when working in the area and want sleep-​cheaps (this our favorite, but when my better half is along, she would prefer the fancy Bed & Breakfasts just a few blocks to the east (closer to Cannery Row) — they offer similar great locations, but at 3x to 4x the price — but hey you get grommet breakfast and free happy hour in the early evenings.

Great place for the location and price — not fancy but really really clean. We got a ocean view first floor room. It had a flat screen tv, new carpet Nd it looked like the bathroom had been recently updates. Bed was comfortable and they offered extra pillows right off.
We spent the evening sitting outside our room on the porch in the new chairs visiting our friends next door. Even pulled a table out of the room — ordered pizza and enjoyed the view of dolphins then lights on the water.
Lacked a hair dryer. If I was staying more than one night I would buy a fan for air circulation and noise coverage.

Love this little mom and pop motel. When planning a trip down to Monterey, this is our go to temporary stay. Yes, its old, but it’s super clean, comfy and the staff is very polite and accommodating which is what matters in the end. The location is spectacular and I can tell they take pride in their business.
They do provide shampoo/​conditioner and bar soap; however, don’t expect frederic fekkai or dove body wash… just bring your own stuff, no biggie.
Wifi works just fine, if you want to bury your face in your electronics while on vacation.
If you’re expecting a hyatt, then go there for $ 300+ a night instead and leave this gem for people who can appreciate its charm. :)
I usually take a short walk to holly’s lighthouse café for breakfast or go to the international cuisine for lunch and have a glass of house wine. Walking down Ocean View Blvd for amazing pictures is also a must.

I don’t know how this hotel has less then four stars on Unilocal.What you see is what you get and I really like this hotel a lot.
We had called the Hyatt, and about five other home town hotels as we drove down the row. I really wanted to stay at a mom and pop our cute bed & breakfast to support a small local spot. Everyone was about $ 249+/night which was fine but we couldn’t get an ocean view for less then $ 349.We almost settled but then we saw Borg.
The man on the phone was very nice and had a room with an ocean view literally right across the street from the ocean. For $ 139, it was ours for the night.
Sometimes we want room service and a really nice room with a big shower and big fluffy towels and we pay for that without blinking. This time we wanted the ocean. This is a modest hotel. While it is ‘older’ it’s clean and that matters. The tile in the bathroom is probably from the 40’s but it still looks pretty damn good, and clean.
Plus we got the added bonus of some much needed exercise. We walked to the row for dinner. It was about a mile and just right. We did take a cab back because it got dark.
We feel asleep listening to the waves crashing on the rocks/​beach right across the street. It was heaven.
When we first got there, the gentleman at the front desk seemed like the owner. He took pride in the hotel and shared it’s history with us. Apparently the same family owns it. He said they have probably received many offers over the years from the big guys but clearly never sold out. I love that. Also they have an info card and they are transparent with their rates as they are clearly listed for winter/​summer on the card which is nice.
He gave us a key to check the room before renting. While we weren’t ‘wowed’ with the décor, size or amenities, it was exactly what we wanted, all ocean :-)
There are definitely times for a nice room and all the perks but for a quick weekend get away this is our new spot. They have kept it simple and we loved it.
If you are hoping for an amazing hotel experience stay elsewhere. If you are looking to fall asleep to the sound of waves and to wake up with such a gorgeous view for under $ 200/​night, this is your spot.
