We hired Cindy to help us with a remodel. She knew when she accepted it that we didn’t live in town and would have to do most of the work via email. On July 24, 2015, I received an email with an final payment request even though the project was not finished. I have never had a contractor request final payment before the end of the project.
On July 30, 2015, Cindy quit. The project isn’t done and we are now left trying to complete it. In her email she says she feels attacked by the emails that were sent — the contents and tone of which — I’m happy to share with anyone who wants to read them. There was one email where I said we couldn’t install a glass vessel 1″ below counter as recommended because the spec sheets said it could only be counter mounted. I found one sink that said it could be partially recessed. I let her know and the contractor that I could go with either a new sink that could be partially, or with adjusting the height of the cabinet — either worked for me. By the way, the contractor was copied on all emails and indicated they were appropriate.
She also says that «I emailed and communicated as I feel appropriate and have received little to no response from the updates I sent for everyone’s review». We received a series of drawings — 20 pages of cabinetry and 12 pages of single spaced spreadsheet specifications on July 14. By July 20 we had sent back a detailed response with comments. I’m not sure anyone could have reviewed that much information and written back comments in less time. It took us 6 days. Again, I’m happy to share this with anyone who wishes to see it.
Cindy has indicated before that she wasn’t happy with our response time and I did let her know into the project that I had had a TBI and was working as fast as I could. Her comment was «this should have undisclosed before the start of the project.» was hurtful and really had nothing to do with the project. 6 days to review all those specifications and numbers isn’t a bad turn around time.
Her email says, «The minute I don’t love or feel the love back it is time to part ways.» I guess if you hire her you’d better be prepared to love everything.
Cindy did say we didn’t have to pay the last invoice; but we have sent a check for the final payment. We honor our agreements.
To quit and be so hurtful, does not make this a happy ending.
