History

Established in 2000.

The business was founded by Paul Kaplan as an individual real estate agent. Having a degree in architecture, he came to the desert for his love of mid-​century homes. His initial career began remodeling homes; it quickly morphed into representing friends also interested in finding architectural properties. Over time he recruited additional agents to help out with the volume of business he was producing. Frustrated with the typical real estate offices, in 2010, he decided to open his own company, The Paul Kaplan Group, Inc. They are cutting edge with regard to technology and marketing to provide the best exposure for their listings. They hire only experienced knowledgeable full time agents, that also live in the area, to represent their clients. The Paul Kaplan Group, Inc. is one of the only boutique, non-​corporate brokerages in the Palm Springs area, that specializes in architectural style homes.

Paul has a degree in architecture. He formed The Paul Kaplan Group, Inc. and filled it with agents that have a passion for architecture and design. He’s an adamant support of historic preservation and local community events. As an annual sponsor of Modernism Week, Paul has been attributed to being a key player that helped bring world wide attention to Palm Springs Mid-​Century Modern architecture and design. As a side line, Paul has renovated and lived in multiple styles of homes in a variety of Palm Springs neighborhoods and has a unique expertise regarding real estate throughout town. Having grown up in a family that was in the retail biz, he has a strong commitment to customer service and pleases his clients.

Met Paul Kaplan many years ago. When we where in the market for an MCM home in Palm Desert we reached out. As fate would have it, we were contacted by ALICE REIMANN. What a LUCKY day that was. From our first meeting it was clear ALICE was not your typical Real Estate agent. She listened carefully to our list of wants and must haves. The search went on for months. Including one deal that fell apart because of the seller. ALICE never waivered, she stayed positive and focused on the goal, finding us our dream MCM property.

We worked with Mike Johnson and he has helped us even after we closed on our house.
We are new to Palm Springs, and on top of this, out of town frequently.
Mike would accommodate this, and so did the lender he recommended, Jeff Cosmos.
Overall, we felt like we got a great deal.

Michael Slate ROCKS!
We met him at a Paul Kaplan Group open house when we were snooping houses we’d found on Zillow.
He was very helpful that day, and over the next month or so would send us new listings that fit our criteria but was NEVER pushy.
When we returned to Palm Springs we had a bunch of houses we’d found and wanted to see.
He very patiently drove us around to see those houses, and none of them worked for us.
Then he took us to a house we didn’t even know existed, and it was an instant «OMG this one is IT!» moment.
Throughout the whole process he was super-​helpful and always believed it would happen even when we weren’t sure ourselves. He hooked us up with Sean Teague at Franklin Loan Center who would NOT give up in getting the financing together.
We couldn’t be happier in our new home and I can’t recommend Michael highly enough!

I listed with Kris Rain. While she was lovely at first and very helpful… after my condo was listed, I needed to have a heart to heart about out strategy, and marketing. After my call was not returned, I called Paul Kaplan himself to try to communicate my frustration– and he never called me back. That was 4 months ago. Should I continue to wait by the phone?
Needless to say, I pulled the listing. They took their lock box and kept my front door key, with no attempt to return it. I was ultra confused by this whole company. Really unprofessional all the way around. I have switched now to re-​list with Marc Lange @ Sothebys … total class act.

At the end of July, we came to PSP for the first time. We fell in love. By the end of August, we started looking for house on Trulia. We loved a few and ask an agent to help us. We met Mike Johnson while looky-​looing open houses last summer and decided that if we ever did buy in the area, we wanted him to be our buyers’ agent.
A couple of months later I gave Mike a call to see if he knew anything about a certain listing, and although he didn’t, he offered to drive out and have a look. The next day, he texted us photos from the property and we ended up making an offer.
Mike is beyond knowledgable, whip smart with a dash of cheeky, and has great sense of humor which is helpful when one of the buyers is starting to lose hers. Paul and his team are the local experts in Palm Springs, not just for mid century real estate but also for service/​contractor referrals. Paul has referred me to electricians, plumbers and pool contractors. Most recently I used his pool contractor referral, Gary Gattano — Gattano Pools, to add a spa and fire pit to blend with the style of my kidney shaped pool. Gary was awesome, professional, honest, reasonably priced and delivered the project beautifully AND early.

What else is there to say about Matthew Reader except ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS?!
Use him as an agent, and it’s like you get a bonus comedy act for free!
The inevitable bumps of a home purchase can’t be avoided, but he was able to make them almost enjoyable with his humor. He got me a great deal for a fixer in Yucca Valley (aka «Hooterville»), and I felt like he gave me the same attention as he would in one of his usual high end transactions in Palm Springs.
Not to mention, his outfits never fail to entertain as much as his witty repartee.

When we were looking for a mid-​century second home in Palm Springs, we knew that there was only one realtor who we could trust to show us high-​quality MCM gems, Paul Kaplan, and offer us his architectural expertise and thoughts during the process. While we met with Paul a few times, we worked with Kris Rain specifically in finding and buying our house.
We highly recommend working with Kris Rain [and my husband and I are both very fussy professionals (lawyers) who are generally pretty difficult to please (you can tell by my other Unilocal reviewsI think)].
First, she instinctively knew which homes would be a good match for us and didn’t waste our time taking us to homes that we wouldn’t consider. We actually ended up buying a home that we would probably not have considered ourselves, but with her guidance were able to see the many positive attributes of the home (and now couldn’t be happier with our choice).
Second, through the most stressful part of a home purchase, the home inspection and escrow/​closing, Kris was indispensable. She responded to my emails within minutes, followed-​up regularly and made helpful suggestions to keep us on track. I never felt stressed or worried that something wasn’t being handled. Kris was on top of the transaction and we ended up closing in less than 30 days.
All in all, we couldn’t be happier with our vacation house and the experience of working with Paul Kaplan and, specifically, Kris Rain. If you’re thinking of buying a property in Palm Springs, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this group of professionals.
