Visitors are immediately sent back in time as they reach the original Palmer Union Station dirt road. History
Established in 2004.
Set on the grounds of historic Frederick Law Olmsted Park, constructed by the landscaper in in the mid 19th century. Your dining experience will take place in the former Union Station, designed by world-renowned architect, Henry Hobson Richardson.
Richardson, a large man weighing over 300 pounds, designed buildings that were a reflection of his size. He used heavy arches and stone blocks to form massive buildings rich with texture. In planning the station for Palmer, Richardson was challenged to design a building that would serve both the New London Northern Railroad and the Boston and Albany replacing the two existing stations.
Blake and Robin Lamothe purchased the building in 1987, and spent 17 years restoring it until opening it once again as Steaming Tender Restaurant.

Blake and Robin Lamothe were in their early 20’s when they purchased the old Palmer Union Rail Station in 1987. It took them 17 years to restore this massive structure, and together they opened the Steaming Tender Restaurant in 2004.
Since opening the restaurant it has drawn the interest of many national rail magazines, plus national and local television programs– «Good Morning America», Boston TV Chronicle, TV Diner and the Phantom Gourmet. Steaming Tender Restaurant has also been featured in Worcester Living Magazine as a destination restaurant for rail and history enthusiasts. People travel all over for the great food and to watch trains — as Palmer is known as the top location for rail enthusiasts in New England!
