Specialties

The purpose of La Comida de California is to provide nutritious meals to persons 60 years of age or older and their spouses. A three-​course lunch is served in a pleasant, social environment at La Comida dining room at 450 Bryant in downtown Palo Alto. Lunch participants have access to numerous other services including educational, recreational and social activities provided by the Avenidas Senior Center.

La Comida provides noontime meals, Mondays through Friday, cooked and served in the La Comida dinning room at Avenidas.

History

Established in 1972.

La Comida was started by the Rotary Club of Palo Alto and was incorporated in 1972 as the first lunch program for seniors in Santa Clara country. Two years later federal funding for this program was available through the Older Americans Act.

La Comida is a subcontractor for the County of Santa Clara, Senior Nutrition and Services Program. The program is funded by federal, state, county and city agencies, and from participant donations. The Rotary Club of Palo Alto, the Host Lions Club of Palo Alto, and the Kiwanis Club of Palo Alto have made generous contributions to the La Comida program as well as for special events such as holiday luncheons at Thanksgiving and Christmas. La Comida is directed by an independent, 18-​member board of directors, who oversee the budget, work with the county, and do out reach to the community.
