For over two years my husband and I heard the same thing from multiple doctors, «Nothing is wrong. Keep Trying. Relax.» I knew there was something wrong. Relaxing was not the solution.
We made the decision to try and find a doctor that would challenge «lack of symptoms» and «the tests didn’t reveal anything,» and I’m so glad we did. Our search led us to Dr. Nezhat at Stanford.
After our first meeting with Dr. Nezhat, we knew we had not only found a doctor willing to dig deeper, but a man full of genuine compassion, kindness and generosity. When no other doctor could get to the root of my health issues, Dr. Nezhat, in his expertise, gave us an answer — and finally, allowed us an option for treatment, a solution, and revitalized hope.
A couple of months later, I had my first and only surgery (ever) under the care of Dr. Nezhat. There is no one else I would have trusted to treat me. His entire team was top notch. For the next three days after surgery, someone from Dr. Nezhat’s office (himself included) called me personally to check in. His office staff is wonderful– especially Didi and Mele, who patiently and tirelessly answered thousands of my questions. They continue to do everything in their power to make sure I am taken care of.
My husband and I are so thankful to have found Dr. Nezhat — a doctor who, at his core, is truly interested in helping people. Thank you, Dr. Nezhat, for devoting your career to helping women and families, and to researching endometriosis. Thank you for your exceptional kindness to us!

We spent a great deal of time deciding which surgeon to go with, we discovered some controversy with Nezhat — stories that he was too aggressive, that he saw endometriiosis where others did not. In the end we went with him and had a very successful surgery. Compared to another surgery in the past — recovery was much quicker. Unfortunately for our fertility journey — we did not get pregnant after the surgery — I’m sure if we did I’d give 5 stars, but there were other factors involved for us in terms of getting pregnant — I’d say Nezhat did a great job with the surgery — we understood the benefits and risks and made an informed decision.

I am so grateful for Dr. Camran Nezhat that I don’t even know where to start! I am also incredibly grateful for Dr. Azi Nezhat, the physician’s assistants, Didi (the surgery coordinator), the ladies at the front desk, and the other doctor who works in the office (regrettably, I forget her name, but she is young, easy to talk to, and blonde). First of all, I must say this: Dr. Nezhat was the only women’s health doctor who was able to diagnose my endometriosis. For years, I was told that my pain was «normal,» even though it was unbearable, and got worse and worse each year. Every month was a nightmare, complete with vomiting, stomach pain from taking large amounts of Aleve and Advil (which most likely caused permanent problems with my stomach), sleepless nights, and all kinds of other ugliness you don’t even want to know about. Eventually, the pain became constant and so severe that even walking slowly caused me mind-​blowing pain. My life came to a standstill, and I was losing hope of ever feeling well or having an active life. One day, one of my friends recommended Dr. Nezhat, and I’m so glad that I took her advice. Before having spoken to my friend, I found Dr. Nezhat through my Internet research, but figured that I could never afford such a great surgeon. I am so glad I took my friend’s advice about calling Dr. Nezhat’s office to see if I had any chance to have surgery with him. I had my surgery back in June, and I just can’t believe how much better I feel. I am feeling energetic, healthy, and happy. I am seriously in shock. After all those years of not having been taken seriously and suffering through side effects from trying to control my condition with oral contraception, I still can’t believe that I found such a caring, dedicated, and skilled surgeon. If you’re having problems like I had, run — don’t walk (!) — to Dr. Nezhat’s office! No one should have to suffer with undiagnosed, undertreated endometriosis.

This is one of the toughest reviews I am writing. Because I’m really sad that a surgeon that is trying to help woman is actually a bit untrustworthy when it comes to operating in his surgery center.
My story is a bit long but a quick brief. The staff was lovely and got me in on the say my doctor sent an email to the doctor. At 5pm that evening, the doctor told me I needed to have an emergency surgery the next morning. I lived in SF so I had to get back home and be back at his «surgery center» by 9 am — then I had to come back 3 hours later (which was really awful considering I didnt live nearby, and had to wake up early to drive down). Its a bit of a shock for a doctor/​surgeon to tel you you will operate the next morning and I didn’t have time to soak it in, ask questions, etc. And what doctor rightfully operates on someone out of network? Seems wrong if you ask me. Not only that but he charges you $ 2500 for the assistant surgeon (That is illegal). Your not allowed to charge patients that OR the $ 500 fee to use the facility. My insurance ended up fighting all of this.
So although I know he has a lot of 4– 5 star reviews, and my operation was successful — if you have to fight a medical bill for 6 months and pay someone to fight them for you — you have to ask yourself if its worth it.
NOTE: His surgery center is OUT OF NETWORK for everyone. You will have to pay every single penny — insurance doesn’t cover out of network operation. He says he likes to operate in his surgery center bc of the equipment (which is bogus — he does this because he wants to bill $ 100,000+ for an out patient operation under the knife for 3.5 hours). Not to mention the RN that night was absolutely rude.
So then I received my extraordinary $ 100,000+ bill the week after I was recovering from surgery and insurance had declined to pay. I’ve been fighting since April with medical billing specialists against my insurance and the state of California to finally pay the bill and not be owed by me, the recovering patient.
THE GOOD NEWS: I found an amazing OBGYN/​surgeon at UCSF who is in-​network and now monitoring me for my possible next surgery. The doctor wanted to put me on hormones and operate 3 months after the first surgery — after I went through all of that — there is no possible way that I could actually go through that again with the insurance. It was an absolute nightmare and I could have gone bankrupt from it.
I just want everyone to beware of this situation. Make sure you are fully aware if you are paying out of pocket or the insurance is covering your operation/​procedure.

Dr. Nezhat and staff went above and beyond any expectations I had. After being in pain for 2 years thankfully a friend referred me to him. After going to numerous doctors who had no clue about anything really, Dr. Nezhat came to the rescue. I went to numerous doctors, even some of my own doctors I had been seeing for years and got advice from them to «just take some Advil» «nothing was wrong with me». After being told «just take some advil» I ended up going to the ER because I was in so much pain. Thankfully a Doctors on Duty doctor was able to diagnose me with what she thought was Endometriosis. After having some test done and the results being sent back to my doctor I had been with for several years. I got the response of «nothing’s wrong with you everything looks normal». So taking the advice from a friend I went to see Dr. Nezhat and was diagnosed with endometriosis the same day as my first visit. After my appointment I made a appointment to have surgery. I was very nervous but after speaking with Dr. Nezhat and staff I was put at ease. They are very kind, helpful and they and extremely knowledgeable unlike my doctors I had been to before. Finally I had surgery 3 days ago. What a experience. The Stanford hospital staff was excellent, welcoming and made you feel like they wanted you there, they couldn’t wait to help you. The hospital nursing staff was on top of everything and knew how to joke with you to put you at ease before getting ready for surgery! And the anesthesiologist I believe his name was Dr. Bare was by far the BEST anesthesiologist I have ever met. The post surgery nurses were even great. And on top of checking up on you getting you ready to go home and making you feel comfortable. For the last 3 days Dr. Nezhat’a staff has called me personally checking up on me, asking how I am doing. And making sure everything is okay. Today Dr. Nezhat even called to check in on me! And that made me feel like I picked the best place for me! Dr. Nezhat and staff is the most genuine, helpful, caring, professional office, and I am so glad i had the opportunity to be treated by you.

Dr Nezhat recently performed surgery on my daughter and she is in less pain. He found more/​new Endo to excise, was respectful towards her previous surgeon’s excision and clear about outcomes regarding her case (her body makes adhesions before the eyes of her surgeons as quickly as they are excised). I hope those who read this understand that every case is unique and Dr Nezhat has great experience, but is still only a human being doing his very best to raise awareness, and work to relieve as much pain and long term complications as possible.

Not sure why there are negative reviews. I have seen so many doctors for endometriosis and this is the best care I have ever received. I just had surgery yesterday and am currently recuperating but Dr. Nezhat performed a surgery that other doctors either said could not be done or that they were not skilled enough to perform. I’m so grateful to him and his staff for their dedication to woman and this mysterious disease.

Dr Nezhat and his staff are a breath of fresh air! So welcoming and friendly. They made an emotional and nervous process as easy as possible. His staff is top notch and represent him well. For being the leading Dr in the world for Endometriosis treatment, he is soft spoken, gentle and sincere. Once I set up surgery date we were given detailed instructions every step of the way to prepare for pre-​op, what to expect on surgery day and post-​op. They made sure I was well informed. Dr Nezhat made sure I understood everything explained and the staff reinforced instructions and details.
The nervous day of surgery came and Dr Nezhat talked to me and assured me all would go well. He was calm and very tender. I was assigned my own nurse to care for me in the surgical center. She was outstanding with attentiveness and compassion. She was by my side from the beginning to the end.
In the end, I must say that everyone involved was top notch in there kindness and human connection. If you are in need of any reproductive help please consider visiting Dr Nezhat’s office, may you too experience the same care.

I am very grateful for Dr. Nezhat and his team. I have had endometriosis since the age of 20 and he recently performed my third lap at the age of 24. After my last surgeon (OBGYN) was unable to remove any endometrial tissue on my second lap, Dr. Nezhat cleared up everything and my recovery has been great and almost pain free. Thank you to Dr. Nezhat for being the bright spot and advocate to help my daughter in law — her endo was misdiagnosed for years & the doctor she was seeing before Dr. Nazhat botcher her surgery and she was in the hospital for almost a month. Our family is very close & we all were taking shifts staying with her during her horrific ordeal. She was a very sick girl & once she came out of the woods the original doctor & the follow up doctor wanted her to have a hysterectomy as soon as possible. This was a devastating thought for a newly married, young woman in her mid twenties, who wanted children.
As a family we all started looking for other options. Dr. Nezhat’s name came with a glowing recommendation. Her insurance did not have him on her plan. She paid for her first visit out of pocket & he was able to assist her in getting her insurance to refer her to Stanford for treatment. When all was said & done, her insurance even reimbursed her for her out of network 2^nd opinion that she already paid for. We were so grateful that he came up with a treatment plan, and scheduled surgery to remove her stage IV endo– now for the first time in her life she is pain free… and has her options open to possibly having children have improved– Dr. Nezhat & his staff are amazing, caring & take the well being of their patients very seriously.

I have much trust in Dr. Nezhat and the associates he choses. I have had 2 surgeries. Although Endo can’t be cured it is nice having a clinic that specializes and understands the perils that accompany life with Endometriosis. The staff is all very nice and a great environment for women. Dr. Nezhat is absolutely amazing.

Best care money can buy
Dr. Nezhat is the BEST fertility/​womens reproductive surgeon you can find! Before we can here my wife and I heard «You’ll never conceive naturally … and may never conceive at all». After surgery from Dr. Nezhat not only is my wife’s fibroid and endometriosis gone, but we conceived naturally. Didn’t even need fertility drugs! So let me break it down
The good
— Dr. Nezhat is top of his field. He is thorough in his diagnoses and leaves small scars that heal fast post surgery
— Natural philosophy — most GYNs direct you to IVF at the first sign of fertility trouble. Not Nezhat, he cares about helping you conceive naturally and will give you all options to do so.
— Care from the office — Thorough before and after care. In fact when we found out we were pregnant, they even followed up with us all the way to the 12^th week
Things to be aware of
— Wait — His waiting list was 5 months for us. He’s top of his field and in demand.
— Cost — Best care isn’t cheap. We paid $ 2,500 for two surgical interns to be present (they helped us a lot both post surgery) and I’m sure my insurance paid quite a bit as there were a lot of tests performed.
Net-​net: Nezhat is a top notch high quality surgeon who will provide you best care you can find and help you conceive naturally. Just know it may cost more and you may have to wait in line behind many other women looking for the same top notch care.

I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis in January 2013. My OB performed a laproscopy, only to have the pain return a mere two weeks later. Frustrated, I looked up bay area specialists and Dr. Nezhat’s name came up. Halleluja! I met with him in February and started a drug therapy to prepare me for surgery in August. During the preparatory phase, my pain ceased completely. I felt like my old self again. I had my second laproscopy on August 19^th, 2013, and conceived my son naturally three weeks later. My son was born on July 4^th, 2014 and I have Dr. Nezhat to thank for everything. His skills are incomparable, his bedside manner is one of confidence and compassion, and the result speaks for itself. If anyone suspects they have endo, save yourself multiple surgeries and call Dr. Nezhat’s office.

Needless to say, I was not the one who had to go through with the surgery or procedures. However, I was the husband waiting in the waiting room and praying that everything was going okay. I have to say that I am extremely pleased with the way they communicated with me frequently. His entire staff was extremely helpful, nice, and continually offering drinks or snacks. You can tell that everyone is happy to work there. Most important of all, the doctor was one of the nicest men I’ve ever met. Not only was he professional, but you can tell that he was very caring and walked me through every step from pre op to post op. I have to say that under the circumstances I could not have imagined a better way for this to turn out. Sincere thank you to the doctor and all of his staff. After reading my comments here, Dr. Nezhat’s office administrator emailed me accusing me of being a liar. It just goes to show my point that they don’t deal well with patients who have any issues or complications.
The guy actually said that fellows meet with patients out of request by patients who prefer women. I was never asked that in office, nor do I have such a preference.
I know that many women do very well after getting surgery from Dr. Nezhat. Unfortunately, I am not one of them. And I’m not the only one. The best surgeons for endometriosis have a 80ish% success rate. I am going to be sure that next time, I see someone who support patients even when their surgery fails.
By the way, if you had surgery done here, I recommend requesting a surgery and pathology report. Note to see if they match. My cervix, for instance, was taken out but according to the path report was completely healthy.

I am so thankful that I found this surgeon. Dr. Camran Nezhat, his wonderful staff, and great team of physicians truly have helped me get my life back, and get it back WITHOUT pain! My Endometriosis was affecting every area of my life. The last 6 months before I had surgery, I was in pain practically every day. I had been battling with Endometriosis for many years, just had no idea what was actually causing ALL that pain. I had Endometriosis of the bowel, bladder, uterus, and many other organs. I couldn’t even go to the bathroom without being in pain.
After doing my research, and I did A LOT of research, I realized there were a few specialists that practiced excision (removing Endometriosis from the root instead of just burning off the top layer) in California, but only Dr. Nezhat accepted PPO Insurance and was in network with Blue Shield. His office is about 5 hours away from where I live, but for a good surgeon: I knew it would be worth it. I see in other posts, people mention that he is expensive. Yes, there is a $ 2,500 assistant surgeon fee for the other surgeons that will assist that aren’t in network: BUT trust me-​after meeting these other surgeons, you will have no problem paying the $ 2,500. The office totally worked with me on a payment plan and wasn’t unreasonable about anything. What your insurance covers or doesn’t cover depends on what plan you have, but Dr. Nezhat’s office and staff is up front about the out of pocket fees. The only fee I was unaware of, and am currently dealing with is the anesthesiologist fee because they were out of network, but even they are working with me to fight the insurance because I didn’t have a choice in anesthesiologist. This also has nothing to do with Dr. Nezhat’s office.
When I first called Dr. Nezhat’s office to ask some questions and make an appt., I spoke to Mele who was super sweet on the phone and super sweet in person. Actually, everyone is the office is awesome. Didi helped me with planning my surgery and explained we could do a payment plan for the assistant surgeon fee. after surgery She is wonderful. She spent so much time with me and my boyfriend explaining everything and answering my thousands of questions. Even getting medical records from the office was a breeze. I called and spoke with Cecilia and she was able to email them over to me same day!
Zuag Yang, the PA-​is amazing. She was at my first visit and my last. I also saw her in the hospital after surgery and because I wasn’t local to Palo Alto-​she had many follow up phone calls with me and was extremely caring and thorough with every detail of my care. I can’t tell you how nervous I was at my first appointment. Zuag, along with Dr. Nezhat, spent a lot of time with me and never made me feel rushed. Both also made me feel like even my silliest of questions weren’t silly, but important because I was concerned. You rarely see this type of detail in care on your first visit and then continued throughout all visits and even over the phone weeks after surgery. I am so appreciative of Zuag and all her care. She also fills out the disability paperwork. It’s SO much work, and she got it done very quickly. Thank you!
I also met with Dr. Main and Dr. Balissiano (spelling?) who were very kind too. Dr. Balissiano explained a lot of what was going to happen in the surgery and again never made me feel rushed throughout my visit.
Dr. Nezhat and his entire staff really care about you and really care about finding a cure for Endometriosis. Dr. Nezhat even orchestrated a walk in March for Endometriosis. He is very soft spoken, but very gentle and makes you feel comfortable in every visit. That’s not always an easy task with female exams. I am three months post-​op and pain free! I am glad I went with someone as skilled as Dr. Nezhat for my surgery. That being said, be prepared to wait weeks, possibly months to schedule your surgery depending on your insurance. He is very busy and very in demand, but trust me-​once you are pain free like me-​you will be glad you waited!
Lastly, feel I must say this: There are some doctors you know are doctors for the money and then there are those very exceptional doctors who are in medicine and surgery to make a difference because they really care. Dr. Nezhat is one of the few that really cares about his patients and helping them become pain free. You will be able to tell this from your first visit because his entire staff is just as caring as he is.

I’m just about two months out of surgery, and I cannot possibly say enough good of Dr. Nezhat, and his wonderful team.
Two years ago, after five years of constant pain, I was diagnosed with endometriosis. My options were Lupron, and Lupron. At my checkup this January, my doctor prescribed more Lupron. I was over it, and began a search of Endometriosis specialists, and found Dr. Nezhat. Two weeks later, I was on a plane, headed to Dr. Nezhat’s office.
My first visit was SO emotional. I’ll never forget the compassion that everyone in the office showed. Dr. Nezhat’s dedication and demeanor made me realize I had come to the right place.
I came back up to the Bay about three weeks later for my preop and surgery. Everything went well, and I couldn’t believe how much my gynecologist had downplayed the presence of the disease.
Dr. Nezhat’s ENTIRE staff has been so caring and attentive through this whole process, and I am so thankful.

Dr Nezhat is THE guy for laparscopic surgery for endometriosis. He literally has written textbooks on it. If you aren’t sure that surgery is the right treatment option for you, I recommend discussing your options with your OBGyn first. Go see Dr. Nezhat once you’ve decided on surgery.
His practice is at Stanford, which is a teaching hospital. With that, his fellows do most of the pre and post op work for him. This allows him to treat more folks and train new surgeons. If you aren’t comfortable with that, he might not be the right surgeon for you. For me, it was an acceptable trade off in order to have expert treatment. Dr Nezhat genuinely wants to help, is extremely skilled and knowledgeable. He’s one of the few people that I’ve met that seems to truly understand how painful and debilitating endometriosis can be, without having experienced it firsthand.
I had an excellent surgical experience with him and his team in 2009, and most importantly, good results. I was able to stay pain free long enough to postpone a hysterectomy until after 2 pregnancies. I also attribute the success of my IVF procedure to starting with the clean (endo free) slate Dr Nezhat provided for me.
As an aside, there seems to be some confusion in some of his other reviews. Endometriosis is not a curable disease. It has to be treated and managed on an ongoing basis. The more experience a physician/​surgeon has in dealing with it, the better a patient’s odds are of reducing pain and improving fertility.

Dr. Nezhat and his colleagues performed a minimally invasive surgery on my wife for endometriosis, which we discovered after a painful, late-​night visit to the emergency room.
Throughout the whole process, Dr. Nezhat and and his team were incredibly supportive, empathetic, and encouraging. They patiently explained everything that we needed to do, all the steps in the process, and what we should expect afterwards. Everything was very clear, and all our questions were answered. They provided us with all the information we wanted, including primary source articles. On the day of the surgery, everything went perfectly, and after a speedy recovery, my wife was back to playing beach volleyball in just a few weeks :) The surgical scars are tiny, and surgical team’s attention to detail was outstanding; they checked for all sorts of other problems, and luckily found nothing other than endometriosis.
It’s so rare to find a doctor who is willing to invest this kind of time to actually get to know their patients, and Dr. Nezhat is a brilliant example of a real, honest-​to-​goodness doctor who cares about the people he helps. He is what I wish every doctor could be. Dr. Nezhat’s extensive experience and soothing manner inspire confidence, and in this hurried, modern world of health insurance and «managed care,» his compassion, empathy, and dedication to patient care have an almost old-​fashioned quality. But at the same time, he has pioneered cutting edge techniques for minimally invasive surgery. I am so incredibly glad that we chose him to perform my wife’s operation.
