We rolled over 401(k) money because we were friends with a bank employee. Initially, we were treated as valued customers. Four years later, the current bank Manager «lost my maturing CD notice in papers on his desk», and generally treated me rudely. I wrote an e-​mail to the CEO, who likes to say that his bank VALUES its customers. I did not receive a reply. We get more respect & better service at Chase bank! DON’T BANK AT MALAGA.

We’ve been long time customers (over 12 years) and it’s been a great bank. If you go to the same bank location, the staff get to know you by name and familiar with your account which helps improve the service. However, the service has suffered as they added branch locations — the tellers were inexperienced and branch managers were learning on the job. Some growing pains but things seem to have calmed down and service up to speed again. The online service is still new and a work-​in-​progress but at least they are trying to improve. I would still open an account here rather than BOA or similar for the service and safety.

Ugh. I switched to Malaga Bank when it looked like Wamu (now Chase) was going down. I am appalled at the low level of service I’ve received– examples: online banking is AWFUL, and they only recently in 2009 started offering estatements. When you have bills paid automatically from your account, you can’t tell who the payee was when you later download your transactions into Quicken. It’s as though the only clients they cater to are those too old to know what kinds of features you should expect (and get automatically at other banks). In addition, they offer free overdraft protection but don’t TELL you that and will continue to charge you $ 25+ NSF fees despite your having mountains of money in other accounts with them. I am actively moving my funds back to Chase, which is about a 6 month effort (due to the many auto-​pay bills we have set up). Avoid this bank at all costs. MB is NOT an example of «smaller is better».

we closed our account because of the horrible service. Tellers completely ignore that you are in line. I think this is the VP’s headquarters and it’s run as if no one cares. After we closed the account, we had the same balance for 3 mos., we wrote a check for that amount to close it. We got a call because a 40 cent service fee had shown up and we would bounce the check and incur a $ 40 fee. After clearing this up, ‘We understand, we’ll clear it up with that small fee” I got a message 2 wks later saying I owed them 40 cents. 1 month later my dad got a call, my dad? yes, my dad, saying we had a bad check. Stay away and go elsewhere. Hidden fees abound too.

If you are into local banks with great service and a flair, you have found your place in this b ranch of the Malaga Bank. Local to the Palos Verdes area, this branch, the place wherre it all started, is in a beautiful Italianate piazza in Palos Verdes Estates. Customers are offered Starbucks coffee as they enter. Waiting time is minimal. Service is both efficient and with a smile. You feel like you are having a personal banking experience, not just a customer at a normal branch.
You will not find an ATM machine for Malaga off of «The Hill,» but if that does not bother you, you could not find a better place to bank.
