Dickson Chen, OD, FAAO

First time « Unilocaler». Dr. Chen was the reason for me to write a review and he was absolutely awesome and friendly.
I bought my contact lens eye exam at Groupon and contacted him immediately thru text to set an appointment. I knew he may not respond immediately due to being busy but he responded within 48 hrs. He came in on time on May 31, 11:45am and assisted me. The eye exam was pretty thorough and quick, got my new contact lens. They’re super comfy that it’s life-​changing. Lol

Dr. Chen is very nice and fun, he had to push back my appointment but he called an hour before so I had enough time to move my plan around. Very relaxing, clean and friendly office in a safe business neighborhood. I’m so glad that I went!

I found Dr. Chen through Groupon and I’m so glad I did! He is one of the best doctors I’ve been to! His office is neat clean and professional. While you’re waiting you can look around and find a lot of information about different products. Dr. Chen himself is very funny, kind, and takes the time to actually listen to you. I’ve been wearing glasses and contacts for a long time and I’ve been to doctors who rush you out of their office or insist that something is a certain way even when you’re trying to explain to them it’s not. Dr. Chen is not like that, and it is very refreshing to be able to go to someone you trust. The other thing I like about him is that it’s not about money for him it’s really about helping you.

I purchased a Groupon for a $ 79 contact lens fitting and immediately contacted the Dr. for my appointment. Aside from the terrible attitude, he is only available 1 day per week on Tuesdays because he does nursing home fittings. Why make a Groupon available then?

This is a review for Dr. Chen, who sometimes rents space at Vision One Optometry.
My appointment was made and then confirmed three times via text messages, directly with the doctor. On the day of the appointment, the doctor rescheduled (via text messages) over four times and then kept me waiting for over an hour because of his long commute from another office and it was drizzling that day. I know this is Los Angeles and nobody knows how to drive in the rain, but I’m a working professional too and I deserve to have my schedule respected as well, especially when I rearranged my day for my appointment, and that included leaving enough time to drive in the misty weather.
Throughout the whole wait, the rest of the office staff made small talk amongst themselves, complained about the doctors and the weather. Another doctor (Dr. Nicholson, the permanent doctor who owns the place and rents to Dr. Chen) was angrily commenting about the staff and the other doctors. No offers for water, no updates about the schedule.
When Dr. Chen finally arrived, he checked in multiple waiting patients at a time. How exactly was he going to conduct multiple simultaneous eye exams?
At the start of my exam, the doctor thought it would be appropriate chit-​chat to get to know a new patient by talking about how great Donald Trump would be for President because immigrants are a real concern. He rushed through the exam and then walked me out to shop for eyeglass frames by myself. Again, no help from the rest of the staff. After waiting almost another hour, the doctor finally sat back down with me to fill out the order.
Glasses were ready about three weeks later, and I went to pick them up and once again, what should have been a rather simple transaction took almost two hours. The entire staff was out at lunch at the same time, the permanent doctor was audibly annoyed about this, staff finally came back to give me my glasses, rushed through the fitting, and didn’t even offer a cleaning cloth or case (I got a case after asking for one).
Eye exam, eyeglass shopping, eyeglass fitting and purchase = total of about 5 hours of my time for nothing extraordinary, except the unbelievably bad attention to service.
Bottom line: used an online discount voucher, but would never go back, even for no cost.

I gave Dr Chen a chance because of his thoughtful responses to his other poor Unilocal reviews. I thought, «this guy just got a bad rap.» Well folks– I made an appointment… Got there early… Waited for half an hour before one of the receptionists finally got in touch with him to see where he was. He was still an hour away! I had come a ways for the appointment already so I waited for him. I guess he put my appointment on the wrong week in his calendar (he says). So after waiting an hour and a half, he checks my eyes. I was not impressed. I kept asking questions about my overall vision and eye health and felt very brushed aside. He did not address my concerns but changed the subject instead! I never did get some of my questions answered at all. :-/​I was charged full price even after the huge delay and waste of my time. I do not recommend Dr Chen. I think he needs to hire a receptionist. He shares the space with another eye doctor so the receptionists are working for that Dr in the office. They have no clue what dr Chens schedule is or if he will even be there for the day. It’s all very confusing. Save yourself the hassle. Go somewhere else.

New to the area and needed to update my contact lense prescription and get new contacts. I found a great groupon deal, about $ 80 for a contact lenses exam plus free trial pair of contact lenses. I have always paid that amount or more for the exam alone so I was super excited about the free trial pair of lenses! I called Dr Dickson Chen immediately after purchasing the groupon and told him that I purchased it and he set an appointment up for me the next week (today). I called to let him know that I would be running late and he told me it was no problem and to just let him know when I came in. Definitely appreciated that because we all know how stressful it can be to run late to appointments, especially our first! So I walk in, and the place is absolutely beautiful! Front desk has me sign in and tells me he will be with me soon. Dr Dickson Chen comes out and we immediately get started. He asks questions, he’s very thoughtful, caring and overall great to talk to. I knew my eyesight was bad but after trying on the lenses I feel amazing. I can’t stop looking at everything! I did need a 6 month pair but do not get paid until next week, which I told him and he said he could order it for me and it would actually be in next week when I come to pay! I left with my free trial pair lenses in and more than satisfied with the service Dr Dickson Chen gave. He is a genuinely great man who loves his work. I don’t want to go anywhere else. Definitely found my optometrist!

I was super-​hesitant to go here because of the bad reviews, but I had a very pleasant experience today with Dr. Chen. He was knowledgeable, patient, and answered all my questions.
I bought the Groupon deal and it was completely honored: got a pair of frames that cost $ 120 for free (due to the $ 150 off prescription glasses deal).
The eye exam was state-​of-​the-​art: I didn’t have to have my pupils dilated or anything.
So, no complaints. I’m pretty pleased with my Groupon purchase, the exam, and the new glasses!

I purchased a groupon for contact lenses, having never worn them before. I thought the office was nice and spacious (which threw me from a couple reviews I’d read). Dr. Chen saw me right away, and was very friendly, patient, and thorough with getting my prescription right and showing me how to put in and take out the lenses. I’m not big in to leaving reviews for places and usually only do when they specifically ask, but this time I feel compelled to because I almost didn’t go after seeing some of the reviews on here. I had a great experience and would definitely go back. I honestly don’t understand the negative reviews. In my experience, the less someone pays for something the more high maintenance and entitled they become, as odd as that sounds. A groupon deal is a groupon deal. You’re paying a really great price for a doctor to see you; calm down.

We finally got my contacts prescription correct. It’s a huge improvement from my last visit. The Dr was not in a huge rush this time. Gave me a new prescription on hand. Glad I returned for a re check

A while back, I purchased a good olé groupon special for an eye exam, which included glasses. That same day, Dr. Chen gave me a deal for a contact fitting as well. He’s funny and professional. Almost one year later, I contacted him to purchase contacts and he had them within a week. Fast transaction. Very happy with Dr. Chen. I think he’s kind of cute too

I had a perfectly professional experience getting an eye exam and contact fitting from Dr. Chen. I bought a Groupon and decided to try out his services. He was very accommodating in scheduling an appointment and fit me in that day despite my tardiness (I-​10 on a rainy day-​go figure). He was amiable and personable throughout the visit. Also, he is willing to price match for contacts if at all possible. I would recommend him to anyone seeking an optometrist and would certainly go back.

Dr. Chen offered a contact lens fitting and prescription at a very solid price. My first fit of lenses didn’t work out, so he worked to get it right. I definitely recommend the experience.

Ok so I had read these poor reviews and went into my checkup pretty skeptical. By the time I left though, I realized some people just don’t always mesh with easy going personalities. But do not be mistaken, the man is bright, He attended UCLA. Now as far as my experience today, One thing I do suggest is ask questions, he’s great at elaborating. I would recommend dr Chen if you are looking for good simple visit. He handled my test and had me in contacts
most importantly, I would go back to him.

I scheduled an appointment for my college aged daughter to see Dr. Chen at his Costco Torrance office hours. He was excellent and since there wasn’t a vested interest in optical sales connected we didn’t experience any bait n switch. I have to admire his credentials, Go Bruins. I’m hoping we can schedule him again this year.

Thanks for the story book dr dickson, but i’m sorry my experience was just horrible. I specifically asked where were your afforadable frames as i was on a very tight budget and you could not even point out which frames were your least expensive ones or even showed any consideration of my budget. i hope you have learned from the feedback you have received on Unilocal.I hope you take into consideration of what is important to your customers rather than trying to make a sale with a big profit margin. The experience may or may not be better for your customers now, but i for sure can not ever refer anyone to you or give you another chance. It was seriously the worst experience i’ve had with any optometry.

I came across Dr. Chen’s name while in search for a good eye doctor and to answer my numerous questions regarding eye lasik surgery. Before making an appointment, I took time to research his medical training, experiences and reviews about him and his practice. I like what I read and with no hesitation, I made an appointment. He was able to accommodate me to the time that is convenient for me. Yes, it is a one man show practice which I and most of us like. He was very patient and he took time addressing my numerous questions and concerns. After the extensive eye exam, I know I made the right choice. As I was driving home, I thought of more questions that I have forgotten to ask. As soon as I got home, I emailed him right away and got an INSTANT reply. Now that is something you cannot get from a big practice. Would I go back for another eye exam? Yes, I would. Would I recommend Dr. Chen? Absolutely!

For the eye exam, he did not do a poor job… just your normal exam of switching lenses to find the right prescription.
He has no assistants, I have a feeling that he’s a part timer at this location. His price is expensive. I ended up paying for 6 pairs of contact lenses for six months worth for a whopping $ 250. You can definitely find a better optometry elsewhere for less.

Do not go here. This dude is shady. He only does this on the side, doesn’t have normal set hours, his office is old and dirty, he’s hard to get a hold of, cancelled my first appt (who does that?), only takes cash, takes forever to get you what you paid for, and did the bait and switch on me for my contacts. Charged me for the premium brand, but then order me the off brand thinking I wouldn’t notice. Wow this guy was unbelievable.
