History

Established in 2007.

My name is Dr. Abs Singh (contraction). I love Tennis ! I took it up with my parents backing, underwent intense coaching, played tournaments as a kid, was eager to go far in it, but my love of academics took over & I decided to become a doctor. I love my career & right now, I’m prepping for grad school. I’ve had the good fortune by now of having had a regular stream of students of all ages to pass on my love for the game, having coached for about 5 years now here in LA. I’ve taught all age groups and all leveIs from super-​beginners to players wanting to turn pro. Being younger than your typical tennis instructor, I can play hard with you instead of feeding you balls only. Of course, being more educated, my lessons will be bang on the money in terms of correct technique. I’m an avid student of the game of tennis besides the field of medicine bringing the same thoroughness of attention to detail as I do while studying a med text to tennis stroke analysis.

What first attracted me to it as a kid was it seemed like a very refined & graceful sport, people playing it as its meant to be played looked nothing short of artists to me. I took it up with my parents backing, underwent intense coaching, played circuits as a kid, was eager to go far in it, but my love of academics took over & I decided to become a doctor. I love my career & right now I’m prepping for grad school, I happened to have a little disposable time on my hands & thought of picking up coaching again as a way of spreading my passion for the game. I’ve had the good fortune by now of having had a regular stream of students of all ages to pass on my love for the game having coached for about 5 years now here in LA.

I saw Abs giving lessons at the park and thought to get them for my daughter. She had fun but as I paid attention sometimes some of the things he was teaching seemed to not make sense to me. I'm not a tennis player, so I asked my friends daughter who plays for her college team about it. She was puzzled and offered to come with me during one of the sessions to see for herself. She was shocked at how bad the instruction was and advised to immediately stop getting lessons from him and helped me find a real tennis instructor.

Abs does unauthorized lessons on public courts. He's a self proclaimed "instructor." I learned how to play from certified instructors - tennis pros. While having to wait for a court because he was taking up a court for instruction for countless hours without a permit, I watched his "instruction" and it's all wrong.

Don't learn bad form and habits, you're going to get injuries and if you ever decide to get proper instruction, your bad form and habits will be really hard to correct.

Please get proper instruction from authorized instructors and at courts for instruction, not for public use.

Abs is Absolutely terrific :). He’s dedicated to his students, he teaches not only technique but also strategy, and works hard to ensure that you are enjoying yourself while you are learning.
I realized I accidentally hit 4 stars — but he’s definitely a 5 star kind of coach!

I have taken several lessons with Abs and think it is about time that I write a review. He is a very passionate instructor, pushing you and also giving space for you to learn and enjoy tennis. Lessons with him are not just about your strokes, but he also gives you input about the kind of racquet that best suites you, point construction, exercises needed to strengthen a specific aspect of your game; in short you get the full package. I highly recommend his lessons to any tennis enthusiast.

I paid for five tennis lessons and Abs (Abhit Singh) was consistently late for the first three. Then, he went out of town. The fourth lesson never happened. After the second cancellation and reschedule with different times, dates and locations I got the location wrong. No refunds. There are plenty of choices for tennis pros that know your time is valuable. Pick another.

Every once in a while when I want to shake things up in life, I sign up for some extra curricular activity. This time it’s tennis!
Abs is such a talented coach. You guys, he is super well educated and teaches tennis because he loves it. He figures out how I can improve and uses hilarious analogies and word play to help me remember what to do. He is gentle with criticism, but not afraid to tell me where and how I can improve and to push me to improve my stamina and technique. He is encouraging and cognizant that although my goal is to be great at tennis, I also want to have fun in the process! I would recommend lessons with Abs to anyone interested in not only improving your game, but your overall quality of life as well! Deuces!

Tried tennis lessons recently with Tennis Lessons LA, highly recommended for both adults and kids. I was very happy with the instruction for both myself and my five year old son. Coach Abs has a knack for explaining and demonstrating technique in a way that makes sense. I had played as a young person, and I was shocked at how my forehand improved immediately with a simple visual technique he gave me. If only he had been around back then, I believe I would have not given up tennis due to frustration. He is also great with my son, who is an athletic, sensitive kid that is super hard on himself. I was very impressed with his patience and ability to keep my son engaged and motivated. He intuitively knew when to gently push and when to ease off, not easy to do!

My girlfriends and me purchased a trial run package of tennis lessons to improve our game with ABS and we loved it! One of them even lost those 5 last pre wedding pounds. The instructor was effective, and so gentle that I sent my 2 boys to them over the summer. They are having fun, improving their skills and actually refer to their insturctor as «Big Boss.» I certainly recommend him for all youngsters looking to sharpen their skills, learn about good sportsmanship and discipline. Thank you.

After not picking a racket for ten years, I started lessons with Abs, and I couldn’t be happier ! Abs has a special communicative gift in which he is able to convey instruction with just a few words. While other teachers talk incessantly, Abs explains, and then you do it. He can refine technique in minutes and has taken my game from 0 – 60 mph (actually more like 40 mph with my talent. lol) in eight lessons. He plays hard with his students after teaching the technique, so it helps dial it in. A great cardio workout ensues which leads me to believe it does pay to have a young rather than a typical old coach. Anyways, Never have I had a teacher in any domain that has encouraged such results in so short amount of time. I highly recommend this excellent teacher and fun human being.

I’ve taken lessons from many pros over a thirty year love affair with tennis, by far the best is Coach Abs Singh «the Tennis Doctor.» He is hard-​working, attentive to my game, respectful of my skills but always with player development in mind. I’ve learned a lot in the three years I have been his student, and advanced my skills. Highly recommend taking on a series of lessons, you will definitely improve!

I really don’t understand the previous two comments. I have been playing with Abs for almost two years now and he is a great coach! He is patient, attentive, uses the right analogies and works with his students. It’s true that he is always late… still a great coach though.

He was less attentive when he was just one on one with my son. When I dropped him off, I often stayed behind to see how the instruction was going, and Abs was just going through the motions. There was no direction given to my son when I wasn’t around. Then i stayed behind to watch, and all Abs wanted to do was talk to me about current events (during the one hour instruction I paid for!). If you can find an alternative, I would advise it. He’s nice, but just not that great of a coach.

I’ve been taking lessons with Abs for about a year and am really enjoying it. I’m not the most athletic person so I had doubts that tennis would be for me. However, Abs’ approach makes it fun to play and he seems to know just how much to push me so that I’m challenged, but I don’t give up.
I have seen other instructors who yell at students which I think is horrible. Abs never does that. In fact, he is easy to talk to with a great sense of humor and very encouraging. He always ends a lesson on a good stroke so you feel more confident.
He does tend to run a few minutes late sometimes which is why I didn’t give him 5 stars.
I’m revising my review as of 11÷25÷14 to let everyone know Abs has made every effort to always be on time. There is the occasionally issue with traffic which we all have, but for the most part he is now a 5 in my book.

I’ve been taking lessons with Abs for about a year and a half and I can’t recommend him enough. I hadn’t played in almost ten years and needed a refresher but after one package of lessons my play improved so much that continuing was a no brainer.
From radical changes to my grip and stance to small adjustments, his instruction has made me a more competitive player and I can safely say that I’ve never had as much fun playing tennis.
His gentle, encouraging approach to teaching is a welcome change to the rather impersonal nature of many tennis pros.
Easily the best one on one lessons I’ve ever taken.
